Very appropriate for you to post that Paul.

Just spotted it on the local news on the telly!

Great news Paul; what a shame the loco was scrapped as it was a nice looking and characterful machine.

Cheers

If you paste the following lat/long coordinates into Google Maps you should get the right location (the photo is taking looking north-east): 54.974282,-1.6001

The houses in the background are still standing, assuming I've got the right ones:

https://maps.google.co.uk/?ll=54.974424,-1.600506&spn=0.0046,0.013937&t=m&z=17&layer=c&cbll=54.974431,-1.60035&panoid=0RdxVdYq3l0QZTGM6Nj3SA&cbp=12,45.87,,0,0

It really is incredible that the paint on those panels is in such good condition after nearly 50 years buried underground!

thats excellent news

I was only recentley admiring this shot of 26500 and trying to pinpoint the location on google earth

That be Trafalgar Yard buddy. The train is coming up from Quayside or shunting wagons for/from Quayside.

The Google shot from Arpster shows the new flats/apartments (Uni accommodation?) that were built on the Yard site.*

I have quite a lot of info and links re this area and it has been discussed on here in the past so don't work too hard before checking this out. It is quite good fun doing a site visit especially down on Quayside, that has changed dramatically but one can still find the odd trace of what once had been.

*Up at the site of T Yard there are still some artefacts and original old buildings on the main road side.

You can walk up to this site from Quayside in about 30 minutes.

My advice is do a good Google earth survey of the new Quayside to orientate yourself and then look at the pics in the mag I'll tell you about.

Here are some pics of a layout based on Trafalgar Yard not built by me (see next post by Steve)but owned by me until last year. It now resides near North Blyth!

Hi,

Just found this thread, what an amazing find and the photo reminds me of my old shelf layout Trafalgar yard in EM Gauge although the loco was black and the guy in the cab door way was looking the other way I think, it was described in railway modeller in 2004, and since sold on.

Steve.

Here is 26501 at its final resting place at Choppington in June 1966. It was broken up by T.W.Ward the following month. There were a few ex. Bedlington & District buses there as well which were being broken up by Willoughby's of Ashington. I think it was probably Willoughby's who were sub-contracted to cut up the locomotive in the end. I think they cut up a few Class 14's for the NCB in later years, I visited there quite often between 1965 and 1975. My recollection of the guard dogs eating raw tripe.......................I can still smell it now!!

I have just noticed this; back in the 1980's I was a member of the Blyth & District MRS and the Chairman, the late Paul Humphries was the son of the owners of Willoughby's and he told me then that he had these panels off 26501. He may have shown me a photograph of them. After this length of time my memories are a little hazy and I understand that he has since passed away.
