Ed's Modern Image Workbench

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've been developing my modern image layout, Deal, for almost a year and a half now (here's a link to the layout topic: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/79808-deal-present-day-east-kent-in-00/ . I've dabbled in a bit of kit-building and repainting so I've decided to start a workbench topic.

I've just finished (or, more accurately, nearly finished) a couple of DRS Mk2E coaches:

This included respraying and applying new transfers. My next project, using the same base model (Hornby R4610) is slightly more ambitious. Inspired by the work of Mick Bryan - Newbryford, as he's known here - I've decided to have a go at recreating a couple of Network Rail coaches.

First up, I'm having a go at 977868. This seemed like a fairly easy place to start; on one side all the windows remain as they are on the model, whilst on the other there are a couple of window blanks to sort out. Here's what I started with:

17012065052_a33d77cc77_c.jpg

I split the coach up into its component parts and put the chassis and lighting unit to one side.

The windows are secured with quite a weak adhesive and are pretty easy to prise off with a sharp blade.

The next job was to split up the window assemblies. On one side, 977868 has two blanked-out windows; one appears to be a painted-over window, whilst the other is completely blanked out. Bearing this in mind, I cut one window away from the others and fixed it in the appropriate aperture with some contact adhesive.

I then moved on to the window furthest to the right on the same side. This required its frame removing with a sharp blade and a bit of filing to get the corners square.

After that, I cut some plastic to approximately the right shape and used it to fill the aperture, supported by a larger piece behind.

I then went on to abrade some of the paint from each bodyside to minimise the chance of the BR livery showing through at a later stage.

17012069512_6c88b3d60a_c.jpg

That's as far as I got today. Next up, I'll fill and file the window blank until it's flush with the bodyside.

Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Ed

Great work there - can i ask you what brand of paint and colour did yo use for the coach doors on the DRS coaches ??

Regards

Ben

Hi Ben,

Thanks very much! The paint is Revell no. 50, Light Blue. It's not an exact match but it's as close as I could find.

Hope that helps!

Hi all,

After a long absence (at least from posting updates on RMWeb) I'm back.

A few weeks ago I received a couple of Hatton's KWA Warwells. I had in mind a very clear idea of what they should carry - Warrior armoured vehicles (albeit Revell 1:72 versions!).

However, in reality the Warrior armoured vehicles should be mounted on specially-designed cradles for rail transportation. Pictures of these cradles without anything sitting on them are fairly hard to come by but I did find a few after a bit of searching:

Side-on views were also helpful:

After collecting some research photos and some appropriate lengths of styrene section, I began work.

This is what I ended up with:

It is by no means perfect (I'm not convince by the layout of the longitudinal beams) but I'm happy enough with it.

It's now primed and ready to be finished off in green and rust.

A bit more progress this evening.

Side extensions were added to the Warwell's deck using 3mm strips of styrene and 4.5 x 4.5mm squares:

These were then painted with Humbrol acrylics no. 30 (green) and rail colour no. 407 (warning yellow - a very good match for the colour used by Hatton's). The Warrior cradle was given a couple of coats of no. 30 and some rust streaks (Vallejo dark brown):

I'll attempt the deck extension supports, tension straps, and some proper weathering in due course.

Looking good Ed, I have a 1/72 warrior in the stash myself although I'm hoping for a repop of one of the 1/76 kits.

What are your thoughts on the straps? I'm toying with the idea of trying Justin's ratchet straps from scalemodelscenery. I think if I have a diagram from an old Model Rail if you need references.

Thank you! I thought I might have a go with dental floss and plasticard, though the scalemodelscenery ones do look good. Diagrams would be very useful, thanks.

In the interests of accuracy, the diagrams are in the December 2006 Rail Express Modeller and not in Model Rail as I initially thought (although some of the older MRs do have useful prototype photos).

Ive seen that PH supposedly haven’t been responding to comms recently, not sure if they are still going ?

Looks like a nightmare to try and make for me, I’ll wait for a 3D printed one
