As for 'Falcon' retaining her cast emblems to the end, that was more by luck, than judgement - and the work of the BTP in recovering the missing crest.......... which during its enforced absence had been replaced by a self adhesive image of 'Babar the Elephant' - which was not removed when the recovered crest was restored to the side of the loco, and remained visible beneath.

    See the photo below...........................

There was a thread on this many years and RMWebs ago, inc. a colour pic.

From comparison to the characters in the Babar stories, the sticker was of Alexander or Pom (Babar's sons) due to the blue shorts (style of shirt worn would differentiate but it's not visible!)

The signal might have reverted after the loco passed it?  Or could just be the effects of a zoom lens?

That's what confused me about up and down.

It does appear to have gone past the red signal but I cannot remember the details of the signals at Darlington as to whether there is another signal further along.

The last photo was taken during the S&D 150 event when the station was exceptionally busy and some strange things seem to have happened.

There were sometimes Local instructions which allowed trains to sit/start from in advance of the signal, usually to do with train length in the platform (Fort William springs to mind). Sometimes a back indicator ('OFF') was provided on the signal but not always.

These Summer Saturday trains were still running 10 yrs later - we were on one in 1983 & 1985 to go on holiday. We joined at Edinburgh Waverley on one of the former 'sub' platforms (20/21) which were a bit of a schlep up the stairs, along a footbridge/passageway then back down again (particularly with luggage)

  4. Looking for something else, found an image of SR coach in lined maroon, August 1964

    N class 31401 on local, main line nr.Farnborough. Aug'64.

Another thing to watch for is 57' versus 64' stock - 64' ones had one more compartment

Only certain coach types were 64' (S/BS?) and were less numerous (mainly SR/WR?)

There's a photo of several somewhere else on RMWeb - in the industrial steam topics perhaps, used for coal mine waste iirc

I posted this one in the Interesting Photos on Flickr thread.

  6. Just figured out the angle of the first pic.

The photographer is looking S/SE from the A955 Wemyss road, just east of a filling station and near (what became) Mossgiel Mushrooms. Found it on a 1968 OS map (gated access road, with weighbridge hut) but couldn't work out the houses behind the train - but these are the 1970s-built Edington Place! There were houses there before, referred to as 'The Braes' on maps - presumably old tenements as they were demolished.

  7. Periscopes are covered in the Carriage Committee Minutes in the Parkin Mk1 Supplement.

IIRC most regions wanted rid of them as their unreliable mechanism was a constant maintenance issue but it was the SR that held out for them to be retained.

As has been mentioned, they did not feature on Mk2 vehicles.

Regarding EMUs, I don't know but should be easy to spot on pictures. REP/TC brake vehicles may show signs of plating over as these were conversions from l/h stock.

    Cramlington South Class 37 up breakdown train 19.44 9th June 86 C7578

Good to have you back Dave, just take it easy!

This photo is interesting for what seems to be one of the newer breakdown trains, probably all Mk1 stock and all in yellow.

I remember an article in RAIL magazine c.1985 where they featured the scheme to replace the mixed bag of pre-nat & otherwise worn-out Departmental stock with new conversions from redundant Mk1s.

IIRC lots of features to make the vehicles easier to use/maintain and more modern messing facilities for staff.
