  1. Hello Phil

I have a Hattons/DJM 14xx and it runs fine. I use what were KPC hand-held controllers with feedback tuned to virtually zero.

On one occasion, a controller came back from repair with the feedback accidentally 'on' - and the 14xx performed as well as the average kangeroo! (All other locos were fine.)

The controller was returned and corrected...and all was well again!🙂

  2. Hello everyone

Well done to Bachmann and EFE on these announcements. Plenty there!

In relation to The 00 Wishlist Poll, this is how the new tooling items fared:

    Class 70 - Top 50

The loco has long been very High Polling and went into The Top 50 for 2022 (although it just got in previously in 2018 as well)

    Thompson BG - Middle Polling

This one has consistently been somewhere between High and Middle.

    DBC HRA - Low Polling

This is no particular surprise as air braked freight stock has traditionally been in the lower echelons, and they still seem to sell lots!

We listed the Class 411 4 CEP Refurbished combined with the 3 CEP; the latter was announced in August so we can now delete the former as well.

    Hello Phil

Same book, page 33. No.31875 working 1X08 (Bere Alston-Goodrington Sands return).

I have looked at the SR loco rosters. The workings are there but not in the same way - perhaps (as was often a case) - they found a way of working things to their convenience?

  4. Hello everyone

Phil (Mallard) posted a query as to why an SR Light Pacific could be seen at Newton Abbot shed. I don't have the full story, but can quote from the Summer 1957 WTT...

Booked for SR Engines Up were:

    2.15pm Plymouth-Exeter. Worked straight through, arriving 4.50pm.

4.32pm Plymouth-Paignton. Worked as far as Newton Abbot (arrive 5.45pm) and changed locos with 5.20pm Paignton-Exeter, departing 5.53pm and arriving Exeter 6.33pm.

Booked for SR Engines Down were:

11.35am Exeter-Kingswear. Worked as far as Newton Abbot, arrive 12.25pm.

12.30pm Newton-Abbot-Plymouth. (Was it possible to use the engine arriving 12.25pm?? Unlikely?)

4.30pm Taunton-Newton Abbot. Worked between Exeter and Newton Abbot, arrive 6.34pm

    7.40pm Newton Abbot-Plymouth

I'll dig further and report back if I find anything.

The situation was that the Spam did a return trip week-daily (think it was daily) for Crew Training, SR and WR men or Pilot) on the footplate. The WR men + SR men (or Pilot), used to go around the SR Tavistock and Okehampton way and that was usually a 63XX 2.6.0.  Why the Spam used to be on Shed at N.A seems strange as Exeter was the destination, with a perfectly good Shed at St David's!

There are others that know more about those Turns than I do; (most hang around on A Nod to Brent!)

When I was spotting back then I didn't even know they happened!

    Hello RapidoAndy and everyone

Many congratulations to you on this model - we wish you every success with it!👍

Within The 00 Wishlist Poll, we have gradually been adding individual Pre-Grouping vehicles but content space constraints limit us in that respect.

However, in the 2022 Poll, we listed LNWR Freight Stock as something of a 'catch-all' - and I'm pleased to say that it was the top-rated item in our category: Freight Stock: Pre-1923, missing a place in The Top 50 by just nine votes!

    Hello again everyone

I had overlooked that - during the latter part of last year following the 2022 Poll - I worked with a number of societies and individuals (notably Mr Compound 2632 of this thread) to improve the listings of specific pre-Group freight stock.

I'm pleased to say that Diag.88 was already on the list - so I have deleted it giving us space for another item in 2024.

It's definitely Bushey Troughs, and the train is running (I believe) on the Up Fast. As for the headcode - 'Express freight/livestock/perishables/ballast with no more than one third of the vehicles fitted/piped', the train is nothing of those (unless passengers are classed as 'livestock'!). I rather fancy the train is empty and one put together from a mixture of stock for a test?

    Hello Tony

The headlamp code for ECS was different in LMS days. Attached photo from LMS General Appendix dated March 1937 tfn.

  9. Thanks Graham

As many who know me will already be aware, my wife is disabled and going to shows has to be limited to 90 minutes or so - and that includes travel there and back! I have to be 'highly focussed'!🤓

Fortunately, we have four very good shows here in Milton Keynes each year: MKMRS in June; Silver Fox in August; the very much smaller 'local show' at Olney in September; and GETS in October.

Sadly, that time also precluded me meeting up 'gwrrob' this time.

  10. Hello Train Times

Many congratulations on a bold, new venture - we wish you every success with the project!🙂👍

We listed the Diag.1433 (with the IoW Fish variant) in The 00 Wishlist Poll for the first time in 2022 and it came in with a very creditable Middle Polling position, about half way overall.

    All the best!

  11. Hello everyone

This might be slightly off topic (although related) and I don't actually have a 15xx (at the moment - but it's 'under consideration' for the future).

I note that some readers have had problems with downhill running,

My layout has a long run of about 1 in 160 to climb over itself. I use All Components handheld controllers where the feedback has been switched to virtually zero for me.

The only items that I have ever had downhill problems with are my three Class 105 DMUs (of the original production time). I noticed that they 'surged' and this really precluded me running them. There is a slight improvement when I use my old Kent Panel Controls unit with switched feedback on - but I don't want to use that unit full-time!

A solution I found was to put some tightly folded kitchen roll under the two non-powered axles of the motor coaches. The weight of the motor still enables the wheels to turn.

They run beautifully now as a 2-car unit with a 4-car one (or all combined if needed).

I'm not sure if this will help anyone with a 15xx - but the concept might be of value?

I know some might say that I'm 'introducing drag' to the motors, but I would say it's no worse than a loco having a string of coaches attached.

  12. Hello Bazza

All the 'oddballs' of recent years - such as the S-160, Bulleid Leader, Big Bertha, 18000 and the Jones Goods - have all been consistently Top 50 and/or High Polling.

Having said that, though, the Toplight 'Mainline & City' stock was at the bottom of the GWR Coaches category for the two years we listed it prior to its announcement.

We'd really need to hear 'a good case' to consider re-listing the 97xx Condensing class.

    Hello Phil

The 00 Poll Team removed the class from The 00 Wishlist Poll 2022 as it had been consistently Low Polling over the years, with no sign of any upward progression.

Do readers here want it back in?

  14. Hello everyone

    A frequency question for you...

For as long as I recall, Heathrow Director has been 120.4 but has - seemingly - been replaced by (what was/is) Heathrow Radar on 127.525.

    Can anyone explain?

(Note for context for those who may not know: Heathrow Director is the controller who receives inbounds from Heathrow's northern holds (Bovingdon and Lambourne) and merges them with the southern ones (Ockham and Biggin) to form a single line of traffic before handing them off to Heathrow Tower).

Further to the livery of DURHAM SCHOOL.............

On page 35 of The Power of the V2s, by Gavin Morrison, OPC, 2001 there's a shot of 60860 at Ferryhill (Co. Durham), taken on the 16th of April 1960. Because the loco is very dirty, it's difficult to make out the livery, though it looks like the later emblem is on the tender (if one has the 'eye of faith'), which means BR green.

Many thanks for your concern and continued interest, Tony - much appreciated!

I had done a small amount of net research on 60860 as I only have one specifically V2 book in my library.

Funnily enough, I'm pretty certain it was that very photo you mention above that set me thinking about what livery she ran with in mid-1959!

For the time being, she will run in black.🙂

    Thanks again!
