  1. Personally speaking this latest Engine Shed entry summarises what, for me, is wrong with Hornby at the present time. The product designers create first-class products and then it's left to someone who does not understand enough or care enough about the marketing aspects about how something should be photographed or filmed to present it in a credible form. I translate that it into an interpretation of what they think their market is; it may well be, but not for these products.

Actually I rather like the fact that this blog seems to be made by people who know more about making trains than making films, If they were super professional marketing guys then they would be accessed of being exactly that.

  2. I'm looking for an Engine shed that might be seen on a small branch or light railway - yet everything seems to be brick built, which to my mind seems too "solid" a structure for something like that.

Would it possible to alter the existing small engine shed kit to have clapboard or corrugated construction, both of which textures are already available in the scalescenes range?

One brick paper that I would like to see added to the available selection is the red sandstone as used to build Glasgow Tenaments.

Have you seen this site? ( no connection)

  3. Hornby have been accused of not having good communications, but this Engine shed blog is brilliant. They drop a few hints and the frothing starts :jester:  It reminds me of the good old days of Alan Greenspan at the federal reserve, when market analysts wet themselves if he coughed in the middle of a sentence trying to work out what I meant. I think the boys at Hornby love teasing, tempting, and provoking. I know I would!

  4. N Gauge. Parkend on the Dean Forest Railway.

I love the way that the background meets the 3D part of the overall picture. Brilliant perspective, I have to ask does it works as well from other angles?  I really need to do something about this on my layout which currently has a bright orange wall behind it. There seems to me to be two approaches, the photo realistic one like this or the 'arty' painted one which one can admire but are constantly clear that it is an artificial boundary ( much like the front edge of a baseboard is). I can not decide which approach to go for, but as I have no talent for either, I can only admire picture like this where it just works.

  5. My problem is that in this age of preorders that take years to arrive is that it is all too easy for me to pre-order stuff for a total value that exceeds my budget if it all arrives at once. I have currently an item on pre order from Hattons that I ordered the 7th of February 2014 that still does not have a projected delivery date. I can see this autumn becoming too expensive, so what to do? The one item that should by rights be sacrificed (it’s the most expensive, and the one that least fits my modelled period and location) is also the one I paid a £50 deposit on. In the old days I saved up my pocket money and then went down to the shop to see what I could afford, Now it’s the other way round I ‘buy’ it straight away and then hope that the money is there when it arrives at some point in time that is unknown to me. That makes it hard to budget accordingly.

  6. Regardless of the opposition announcement I think the real question is do you want something that will be a credible accurate, well presented, well running & finished Model or a mass produced over priced toy as some of the resent releases have been.

Quality dose not mean that something has to cost more than the alternative.

Written by some one who has seen neither model, very impartial!

  7. As regards the baffle, I think that it may be necessary as the gaps between the sections will be march larger when running on 2.r curves than they would ever have been in real life. Could it be possible to make them in such a manner that they could be removed by the end user? That way people cold choose themselves depending on their needs/tastes on whether they are need or not. It is probably very much a case of whether the model i destined to sit in a case, or run repeatedly around too sharp curves,

  8. In around 1930, one William Collard, Chairman of the London and Paris Railway Promoters Ltd. proposed to build a Channel Tunnel together with a new, broad gauge (7ft) railway from London to Paris.  For more information see, for example:

    http://archives.chicagotribune.com/1947/06/08/page/115/article/english-channel-tunnel

Perhaps, in true Brunellian spirit, he should have gone the whole hog and proposed an atmospheric railway!  Electric pumps at intervals along the tunnel would keep the pipe evauated and, at the same time bring fresh air into the tunnel.

Brunel also planned to use large wheels on his carriages with the passenger compartments mounted within them.  Taking that idea as well, and applying it to an articulated train, could lead to something like my sketch below:

    attachicon.gifBraodGaugeChunnel.jpg

    Mike

ps how would a junction be made on an atmospheric railway?

    Brunel does a toyata previa!

  9. Just posted on this relative quality on the djm thread. I agree that it's too early too judge however would be surprised if the djm model isn't more detailed. Which runs better, tbc

Where Hornby scores is tts. Would bet djm's blue sells

Less well as a consequence (absent KE3 considerations)

I'm just hoping that neither manufacturer will rush not quite finished or fine tuned models into production in the hope that being first to market wins, worst case both teams rush and we all lose.

  10. I have been looking at the range of track from TIllig and have a couple of questions regarding their points.

The EW-2 points are offered in 2 versions.

    Simple Turnout http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/product/248938/Tillig-H0-85422-H0-Simple-Turnout-Left-W2?ref=searchDetail

    Simple Soft Turnout http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/product/248925/Tillig-H0-85324-H0-Simple-Soft-EW-2-left?ref=searchDetail

Does anyone know what the difference is?

What is the recommended point motor for these?

    This type? http://www.modellbahnshop-lippe.com/produkt/Tillig/4-4-0-24169-007003-0-0-0-0-2-0-grp-gb-p-0/ein_produkt.html

    Or this? http://www.modellbahnshop-lippe.com/produkt/Tillig/4-4-0-60472-007003-0-0-0-0-1-0-grp-gb-p-0/ein_produkt.html

Are there any 3 way points that would blend in with Tillig track. I am a little  surprised they do not manufacture one themselves. Or is there another track manufacturer worth considering instead for a small layout?

    Thanks.

Looking at the two links I think that the difference is that the cheaper one is a kit, at least that is what it says under product details. I have used tillig points because I love the appearance. The tiebar is delicate. I use DCC concepts point motors, but have now decided to fit them to the extension of the tie bar rather than using the hole in between the rails. As I show in my gallery pictures I destroyed one with an over zealous truck cleaning as the pointmotors rod stuck up a bit too high between the track, and I snagged it with the track cleaner :-(

  11. This post, relating to the financial arrangements for the funding of the Class 71 project, is completely incorrect and defeats the assertion made as a result. The payments made by the investors are fully refundable at any stage up until the models are ready for despatch, so DJM does not have a 'captive' audience and risks losing funds below the level of their investment if investors decide to back out. This is all covered in the  Project material on the Kernow Models website, which is easily looked up . Further, DJM has not yet completed the crowd sourcing final target, but it has achieved a level to enable development of the model to take place. Finally, the intention was to have a later production run of models with different running numbers, to be sold via normal retail means, which would be the potential profit return on the tooling for DJM. So DJM have every reason to wish to keep aspects of their model away from a competitor producing the same model, as they hope to be able to sell a later run of their model to those who have not taken part in the crowd sourcing, where any technical or scale superiority could be an advantage in capturing sales.

I stand corrected, thank you for the information.

I assumed that as a Kick-starter project their normal rules applied. Straight from their home page:

Can Kickstarter refund the money if a project is unable to fulfill?

No, Kickstarter doesn't issue refunds. Transactions are between backers and creators directly. Creators receive all funds (less fees) soon after their campaign ends.

  12.

You also seem one-hundred percent certain of whether Hornby can or cannot adapt their plans at this stage, when again, quite frankly you have no true idea.  If I were DJM I'd be doing exactly the same, ie. playing one's cards firmly against one's chest.  After all, business-is-business, and I wouldn't risk a huge financial investment simply because of one or two hysterical and uninformed outbursts via any given forum.

Hornby's development may well be further ahead, but again, business is business, whereby any sensible investor knows never to assume anything...

I have two DJM Class 71s on pre-order and to be fair am quite happy with the information presented thus far.  Sometimes in life we simply have to sit back and accept that we aren't able to stamp our feet, throw a frenzied tantrum and declare, "I want, I want, I want...!"  A lesson I learned well before my seventh birthday, I might add...   ;)

I might have misunderstood something here. But as far as I can see Dave's Class71 is in a different situation than all his other projects. It is crowd sourced, ie. people have already paid for it and can not as far as I know back out financially. So there is no loss to DJM if they choose to buy a Hornby model instead. Quite the reverse, he will be able to sell the extra models a second time! So there is no competitive reason not to show a similar level of info to that which has just surfaced  for the Kings, where there IS a risk of tipping off a rival.

Judging by my own reactions and those of others to the fantastic cad's for his 14xx, which I have already ordered the day it was announced, and the kings, which I don't need and therefore have not ordered(yet). I would imaging that similar information on the 71's would only start a black market for tradings of 'shares' in the project.

  13. Well I have sorted out any problems these delays might cause, I have written in my will who is to get the model when it is finally delivered!

This post is not in any way meant to be taken seriously, I haven't made a will yet although I must get round to it one day.

So your will is only vapourware? :jester:

  14. Maybe from the APT-P Power Car that's part of the National Collection. That was in a DIABOLICAL condition when it was at Shildon, but it's been improved a bit since it moved to the ERM at Coventry.

[beat me by half an hour Rob.  ]

That is so sad, to think that such an iconic train can end like this. It ought to be ought there running today like the HST still is.

  15. The rabbits have taken up residence on the vacant land near the DLG terminal

     attachicon.gifRabbits!.JPG

and the seagulls have started to move in from the harbour - it must be rough at sea!

    attachicon.gifSeagull.JPG

I've also made some progress on the Uds hopper wagon kitbash, I'm happy enough with progress that I've ordered decals from Skilteskoven who now take PayPal.

Hate to tell you this but we don't have wild rabbits here only hares

  16. I hadnt thought of it like that - you could well be right - eeeeeek! LOL!!

I was ribbing my teenage niece, a bright girl, that all kids did nowadays, for their homework/projects, was 'cut and paste' from Wikipedia, she calmly and assertively replied that that would be out and out plagiarism (of course she is perfectly correct in her acerbic statement) and besides the teachers have a computer programme that can identify such cutting and pasting. In my day we just had to flog essays out at Uni, no internet and often wed be lucky to have a WP or PC. I also quipped back - to my niece and nephew - that this new software teachers were using would now ruin one of my other hobbies which is messing up Wikipedia entries (I am joking, it's a line that I nicked from The Big Bang Theory LOL), which in reality I dont have time for, even if I wanted to. My - older - nephew also bright, but a little naive, said; '...do you really mess up Wiki entries uncle M.?' My niece and I just looked at him and burst out laughing, then he got the joke, they're both Big Bang Theory fans too.

Sheldon likes trains and would feel right at home here om RMweb

  17. I placed an order for this model for 1 reason:

    I WANT ONE!

    Not because it's an investment.

Not because it's a limited edition.

I want one. It's as simple as that.

I do not care how many are made or when the order book closes or any of that, I just want one.

    As long as it

    A. Costs no more than was initially specified

    B. Arrives roughly around the time that has been promised and

    C. Is to the same high standard as Rapido's other models

    then I'm a happy chappy.

If these criteria are not met, then and ONLY THEN, will I start with the name calling and toy throwing.

Until then, I shall remain waiting impatiently and getting all giggly when a new photo/video/technical drawing/CAD rendering appears.

Agree, but there is one more thing I'm worried about, and I'm NOT talking about corners. I am slightly worried that every time I run through the engine start, the dog will howl as the turbines scream goes ultrasonic.
