  1. The public have been getting into lifts that don't have a driver to stop it at the right floor and open the doors. Most shops got rid of their "drivers" in the 1960s.

A train is just a lift that goes horizontally.

Copenhagens metro uses driverless trains, there are as far as I know no onboard controls at all. I love sitting looking out of the front window as the train rushes down the tubes that bend quite a lot in all dimensions.

Alright I know that technically they only bend in two (left/right and up/down) but you know what i mean.

  2. Click on your user name at the top right-hand corner of the screen. This gives you a drop-down list of options, one of which is "Manage Ignore Prefs.". Click on that, and you'll then be able to type in the IDs of every single Forum member that you don't want to hear from.......

Could be a long list.  :jester:

Thank you, a long list, but there are a few low hanging fruits, Ignoring them will keep the blood pressure down

  3. And yet another thread descends into a discussion about the merits of criticising models and the varying standards modellers will accept rather than discussing the model at hand.

We have one member who manages to ignite this argument over and over.

As someone else has said, If you don't like whats on the T.V.. there's an OFF button. I'd rather use the mute button . That is to say rather than not reading RMweb ( which is the 'OFF' option) I'd like to see a 'hide users' feature so that users who continually annoy me can be blocked alone with any replies quoting their posts. I DON'T go in for censorship. they have as much right to their point of view as I do. But that does not mean I have to read their posts. A simple bar at the top of each persons screen telling each logged in user how many people have blocked them, might even cause them to think about how they communicate. Andy is that an option?

  4. Has anyone else spotted that it seems to be about 2.8 mm too little distance between the wheels? good job though as it would not fit on my track otherwise, there seems to me to be a problem with the proportions in the things that upset people about proportions.

  5. You were lucky - spent 9 months riding them every weekday on the Southern's indifferent track !!!!  :O

I used to perversely ride in the motor coach just to experience the full hideousness of the ride

I grew up thinking that all trains were Hastings line diesels. Why has no one produced a model? I can't think of a better DMU for DCC sound. I remember them making more noise that a Paxman Valenta, and as they were slugs you could enjoy the noise much longer. Ahhh the sound of them pulling away from Tunbridge Wells Central station uphill through a tunnel with the sound thundering off the brickwork about 3 cm from the coaches....

  6. I thought that we modeled railways. In which case we need to follow what the railways did. Otherwise it just becomes playing with toys nothing what so ever to do with real thing.

But the M7 had not been changed in such a way it looked completely different.

So painting it the wrong colour is wrong, but running it as a narrow gauge isn't?

  7. Nobody mentioned the fact that the GWR ordered a Brown Boveri gas turbine loco because they were really impressed by the whooshing sound it made (Gresley didn't have anything like that they sneered!).

They decided to try a multiple unit as well. APT-E was the result. It was intended to speed up journeys on the branch lines currently provided by a 48XX and auto trailer

Production delays meant, like the loco, it wasn't delivered until long after the demise of the company.

It was tested in secret on the ex GWR lines before being let loose on the rest of BR, once it had been found to be a little overpowered for branch line service. :jester:

    Keith

Oh that's a good one, almost believable

  8. I gave up and ordered one. I think we need a competition for the best rewriting of history as to why the APT-E ran on any given line at any given point in time. In my case (Chard branchline in the early 60's) I'm struggling, I’ve got as far as Beeching was abducted by aliens, and the resulting increase in military spending accelerated technology development to a great extent meant that the nearby top secret and therefore not on any map aircraft engine development site needed a testbed for their work on gasturbines…

Another thing, flashing lights in the measuring car will not be at all realistic unless there are some seriously bearded boffins monitoring them.

  9. Hi, like you I was disappointed so I called Hornby and asked for two separate sets of replacements for both of my models. Roll the film forward about three weeks!

Having gone out to Dawlish Warren for the day to watch Sir Nigel Gresley I came home late evening to find a courier package left just inside my porch. My initial thought when I picked it up was how light it felt and couldn't remember ordering anything.

So upon opening the package I found a well taped cardboard box inside ( about the size of a OO gauge wagon box ).

I duly opened it and found lots of packaging polystyrene together with "one" set of axles !!!! (Not the two I'd asked for).

Ok, so thanks to Hornby I can now replace at least on front bogie with these but, overkill or what with the packaging ?

Goodness knows how much it must have cost them to get these to me. Having said that I am grateful to them, so don't be surprised when yours arrive!

    Regards

Hornby are nothing compared til HP:

  10. I live in Denmark, and have nothing but good experiences with Hattons, One of the reasons I keep on using them is that I do not feel ripped off by the postage costs. I bought a couple of small items from another online site, a willis bridge kit and som replacment wheels total value £12. The postage on this other website to Denmark  £7.50, I've just checked Hattons here the postage price for the same to items would be £2.50 that a 300% difference!

  11. Doesn't matter what voltage it can still catch fire if it overheats.

But the problem is NOTHING to do with overheating quite the reverse there seems to be no electrical contact. I suppose that they may down a passing drone on its way to Pakistan if you remove the interference suppresser. As far as I can see the only person at risk from the 16volts would be someone with some sort of track fetish who likes licking nickel silver, although they would probably be more likely to die from metal poisoning.

  12. Could this be Bachmann's worst ever public relations flop? After what must be the longest wait ever for its release they've produced a model that takes us back to the dark ages. Am I pleased I didn't sell off my old reliable original class 40's for new ones that based on what's been written here  would be guaranteed not to work.

What I find hard to understand is why Bachmann don't seem to test their models before releasing them, I think of the automobile market here and the amount of time they spend on extensive road testing before releasing them. Just imagine if Ford released its Fiesta in the way Bachmann have done with the class 40. Come on Bachmann wake up, we deserve better.

    Ian

Some sense of proportion please, a faulty fiesta might kill someone, a dud Class 40 probably won't

  13. We used our diskwasher to wash all childrens toys that make electronic sounds. They become much more adult friendly as a result, The kids got bemused when visiting friends where the same toys did make all manner of unrealistic noises. But after I explained that they were not nearly so hygenic, everthing was alright. They obviously learned the lesson as they now constantly wash their mobile phones, ipods, and other expensive electronics in trouser pockets.

  14. I concur - I operated the three Tillig Elite turnouts I used on a trial layout with tortoise motors (two underneath and one from the side) and they worked fine in terms of throw. But there was a problem with one of the turnout blades, which developed a kink over time (3 months) and started to angle over. Maybe it was a Friday afternoon one. I have never had a Peco turnout fail.

I have 12 tillig points all powered by DCC concepts DCC point motors, The operate perfectly. They survived my hamfisted attempts at track laying so they are roubust! The biggest issue I had with then is that the fishplates are such at tight fit that if you are not careful while pushing the adjacent track on to them you can actuall force the inner rail of the frog backwards just enought to cause the sharp point of the frog to move backwards sufficently to cause derailments. This I solved by using a mini grinder to  open up for wheel clearences again. Now I know that gripping the rail with pliers rather than holding the track base is the way to join track pieces.

  15. One of the problems with OO gauge track would be that the webbing between sleepers will be even more obvious because of the greater distance between sleepers. I've been thinking about how to solve this problem I arrived at the idea of having the sleepers loose on the rails, the track is laid with the sleepers held at the correct distance by a plastic strip in between the rails. This strip should be castellated on the underside to help keep the sleepers apart at the correct distance. Once the track is glued in place, the strip is lifted up before ballasting. The strip should not be too wide as this would cause problems on curves, and not so deep as to risk also being glued down. This would make is easy to change sleeper types and distances between them as wished .
