As a bit of a break between buildings I’ve been installing two semaphore signals. These are LMS Dapol jobbies that have had their internal boards replaced with MERG kits to allow them to be used for on/off operation through switches on the Modratec lever frame. I did have a GNR tubular post MSE signal here but it failed as the etchings are too weak for sustained operation. I’ve since learned how to strengthen them but the Dapol LMS pegs are very similar to the GNR ones and once I modify these ones with different platforms and ladder arrangements, they will be close enough for me. The will also get some weathering so the don’t stand out as much. I realize these aren’t the same as building your own, but I’m aiming for operation as well as looks and I wanted a reliable lit signal that would respond to the lever frame properly.

Another vote here for the recent plonks, I’m enjoying them all, but the one of that water tank, just wow! That is one hell of a structure and shows Peter’s immense skills.

Great to see the Mickey Mouse, John, and also good to see the Super D still behaving itself. That last B&W shot is fantastic!

Yes, John and Peter’s book is a bit of a bible for me and John continues to be very helpful with my research and planning.

Passenger type 5 has to be a Deltic in two tone green with small yellow warning panels, any of them in that scheme but D9003 Meld was the first diesel I ever had a model of and someone even put a light in it for me, so was by far my favourite when I was 5 years old.
Type 5 freight would have to be a class 60, love the shape of them.

Have to go with a Western after seeing and hearing Western Champion when I was in Blighty one time.
Love the cropped shot of the B17, Gilbert. Any shot with a B17 has to be a good one!

Lovely shots of the Ivatts, John. I have a soft spot for them after traveling behind 41241 on the Worth Valley and weathering a few for my LMS inflicted friend as can be seen below. I like hearing about your workings on Granby too, everything has a purpose.

I had no idea, so this was most informative.
Imagine my amusement when a search for "peco building pack" reveals they have a "Buildings Pack A" and a "Building Kit 1".
Hi Dean
Yes, Peco’s labeling leaves one a bit confused. The doors and windows one has guttering and others bits and bobs which I’ve found useful, the roof one has slate and tar paper roofs and chimneys which were also handy.

Thanks Connor
I’ve been stocking up on both Vallejo and Tamiya for the same reason, but haven’t done too much experimenting with them yet.

Articulateds are nearly as hard as Pacifics I reckon, the Algerian example mentioned earlier is right up there, Union Pacific Challengers with deflectors in two tone grey, Queensland Railways Garratt, NSWGR AD60s. Ok a choice, South African GEAs, very well proportioned.

Hi Tony
Very impressive......you must have spent hours cutting everything out. Time well spent though, you have created a unique model. It sounds daft saying that about a row of terraced houses but no other layout will have a row quite like yours....well done
Painting should be interesting!
Best wishes
John
Thanks John
That's why I persisted, as looking at the pictures of the area, there wasn't a nice clean line of all the same terrace houses like I would've got if I had just used Metcalfe, Superquick or Scalescene ones directly. I also have a thing about different rooflines and wanted to have the effect of slightly different roofs to add variety.
Cheers

Looks brilliant!!
What did you use for windows?
I had been buying up a couple of the Peco building packs of roof and gutters plus doors and windows. They’ve come in very handy for a range of building bits and pieces and gives you some flexibility when kitbashing and scratchbuilding.

I have been working on a scratchbuilt set of terrace houses to have some visual difference between the Metcalfe kitbashes but boy they took a long time. So many windows and even had to make outdoor loos as apparently there are no sewerage connections at this part of the layout and we can’t expect the residents to cross their legs forever. Happy with the roof lines of the line of terraces now.

Pacifics are hard, I love them all! If I really had to choose it would be an A4 in BR Blue, closely followed by an A1 in the same livery. Really though, I should be voting for the loco that gave its number for my forum name. Queensland Railways had a series of Pacifics, initially home built, but a modified version, built by Vulcan Foundary in the UK was class BB18 1/4. The last of the class, part of a second series, was built in Australia and was our Evening Star, the last steam locomotive to be built in Australia, BB18 1/4 1089.

Has to be a B4 Immingham, just superbly proportioned.

Hi Andy
One of the big problems with the J50 is their reliance on plunger contacts to get connection from the pickups to the motor. On mine it frequently gets lubricant (oil and grease) around the pads that the plungers contact on the lower keeper plate. Keeping them clean makes it run better, but the permanent fix would be to replace the plungers with soldered wires. I’ve been threatening to do that on mine for ages but keep persisting with the existing arrangement. The stay alive will help greatly, but solving it will mean replacing the plungers I reckon.
Cheers

I’m not sure graceful comes to mind, but Dub D and 8F are pretty close, but the Dub D pips Stanier’s workhorse because of its closer wheel spacing and clean lines.

Midland Compound and D11/1 are close to equal for me, both elegant engines. Schools are up there too and I’ve always be fascinated by Dukedogs, so hows that for playing the field!

The Scarborough Flyer for me. Always liked the name as slightly anachronistic and clever, given it was probably marketed more to Joe Public than other trains, so wasn't an "express".
