An interesting viewpoint, and very much a trainspotters’ one IMHO.  They were common, 509 in service in the 70s, and perhaps looked a bit dull; they were - are - a well proportioned and neat design and not unattractive in the original two-tone green livery, at least when it was clean (again, IMHO).  But they didn’t have the brutal presence of a Deltic or the elan of a Western.

But some the other classes you mention were also pretty ubiquitous; over 300 37s and nearly 500 Rats if you include the 24s and the 25s as all Rats.  There were 200 40s and nearly 200 Peaks (44/5/6, three classes that looked more or less identical).  Come to that there were well over 200 20s.  Perhaps the outline of the 37s, 40s, and the Peaks, with noses, was more inspiring; by the 70s noses were out of fashion and ‘classic’ or perhaps ‘retro’.  The 40s and 20s made interesting noises, and the 37s growled nicely.   The Rats rattled, failed to pull the skin off the driver’s milk, were spectacularly uninspiring lookers, and utterly horrible to work on; we used to reckon the 56 miles between Cardiff and Gloucester with the 00.35 Peterborough parcels, 4E11, at an attempted 90 mph would shorten your spine by at least an inch.

Which leaves the 50s, and the popularity of these amongst spotters has always baffled me.  A class of 50 long-distance express engines used specifically on the WCML initially and later on specific routes further southwest becomes a very common sight on those routes, and one would have thought they were only really excitement-generators to spotters from outside their area.  They were probably the dullest example of loco styling in their era, like a 47 (not the most inspired looker) but even boxier and plainer, boredom personified.  I hated them for finally killing steam in 1968 and then my beloved Westerns, but in general the spotters went nuts over them.

My opinion of 47s was that they deserved more respect than they ever got from the numbertakers; once they were made to run reliably by derating the engines by 100horses, they were the best all-round mixed traffic general purpose locomotive ever devised for use on Britain’s railways.  The cabs were draughty and the ride was horrible, too soft and rolling, but they could pull anything that was coupled to them, and pull it to time; 95mph passenger, long-distance Motorail (with double fuel tanks), Freightliners, TEAs, block coal trains, MGRs.  They could be dual-braked, fitted with ETH, and they were probably signed for traction knowledge at most depots throughout the country, so they were pretty much operable anywhere at a moment’s notice, a true workhorse, Control’s favourites.  And the horns sounded nice.

Just wondering what’s your view point on the class 31, as a child I always counted them as a big version of the 24 it’s the cab front with the smaller centre window I suppose. Personally  the 31 has to be a favourite with its brutish looks. I was always pleased to see the 31, a 24 would do at a push.

Have to admit I’m more than happy with the correct state on the model front too, having 3 31s on order, one from Accurascale, tempted with a second blue one depending on expected delivery date.

I fully accept it, personally, I feel it can detract from the great job made of the model, and indeed the layout it is on.

The thread on the recent Cavalax 56 seems to have more posts regarding lights and sound than the actual fidelity of the model itself.

I built my layout for me, and when I am lucky enough for it to be asked to an exhibition, I'd like people to be inspired by the subject modelled or the actual modelling, not by noise and lights.   But I understand there are plenty who do like all that side of things.

I find sound and lights work best when both are very muted.  Just my opinion.

It’s the age old thing no two modellers want the same thing. I only occasionally sew the real thing as a kid as the bus went over Swain street bridge. Though I’m sure I could have gone spotting myself when older, I didn’t fancy walking around Highfileds the red light central and drug centre of Leicester back then. So now I model for the recreation of childhood memories of playing trains rather then seeing the real things. so lights are a bonus (Hornby class 25 favourite model as a kid) not too bright, but visible is good, I’m never sure if Heljan model lights are on!

  3. They didn’t has you know but, I would have thought it would have been logical to release new coaches with dcc fitted as standard to bring the whole rage of coaches up to the same standards, with the older coaches they already produced being upgraded when the tooling becomes worn.

Accurascale have said on several occasions that they use more than one factory, so a delay to one model does not necessarily impact delivery of another. Have they said the 66 and 31 are being manufactured in the same factory?

I Never said they did, what I said was simple facts. The website said Q1/Q2/Q3, they have since removed Q1. Leaving a six month time frame. Now for whatever reason they originally started 3 quarters it doesn’t matter and would still be on time even if it turns up in September. So there’s no reason to say anything unless the delivery doesn’t meet their deadline.

Seems like they are indeed to be delivered Q2 2024.

Well all they’ve done is take out the Q1 from the website from what I can see. Has it says Q2,Q3 now,it could be anytime between today and end of September. Which is 6 months. Someone from Accurascale did say watch out for an update about the 31s at the end of this week. can’t remember if it was on one of the topics on this site or FB. But nothing has been mentioned from what I can find.
Could get interesting by the end of the month if the 31s are not on a big boat by then or beginning of may. Has the Bachmann ones will be in the race to see who’s arrive first.

With decent power and traction please!!  Hornby one can't pull the skin off a rice pudding!!  Mine has added weight as well.

    Al.

My moneys on Hornby’s with the 8f, the princess Coronation and Royal both done with the  black 5 on the way. 8f has to be next unless they go for the Stanier rebuilds first. Which are still good models but, could be improved on. Possibly to decrease the production costs which might increase sales. Both models could do with a bit more weight if space permits.

    Hi Tom,

We may have been having a most epic internal argument about the viability of doing it. Some are for, some are not sure. We'll see where we end up with it!

If more people lend a voice to the "for" cause here then it might help win the argument....

    Cheers!

    Fran

Being a harden LMS modeller. I’d be interested in how big a discount you would apply to get rid of them.

2 for the price of one would compensate for time taken to do a full repaint.

You can download the Lokprogrammer software at ESU. You do not need a Lokprogrammer to do this.

After the download and installation, search the ESU library for the file that is loaded to your decoder and download it and open it. There you can see what the programming is and make any changes needed to get your lights working in forward mode.

Under the 'Tools' tab, select 'See CVs Changed', you can see a summary of CV changes that were made and use that list to make the CV changes with your controller.

This is all a lot easier with a Lokprogrammer, and I've done it myself before buying one, but it is possible without one.

I’ll give that a go and see how I get on. Thank you for the suggestion

  9. I have a R3674 class 31 D5579 in golden Ochre runs fine sound great however the  lights in one direction are not working. In reverse it has the red tail lights and white side lights working fine but when travelling forward (end with the fan) neither front or rear lights work. I have put a 8 pin blanking plate in and all lights work as they should.

Is it possible there’s a CV that needs adjusting (and which one please) or is it more likely to be a  fault? On the decoder now? Definitely out of warranty if so. Any help much appreciate.

  10. Well it’s seems to have been eons since I payed for her, and to be honest I was thinking it was part of the second batch. But today I had a parcel delivered from Accurascale. 37 609 has arrived. Now sitting in front of me with her stable mate 37 607. Yeah I’m impressed all over again the livery is out-siding. Some tiny little differences between the two sure I’ll find a few more in time. She just needs a sound decoder now a light weathering and she can be put to work with her sister on the nuclear wagons.

    very happy

waiting not so patiently for 258 to arrive now. Could we have some more rail freight in the 3rd batch please.

Intrigued!  Could it be magnetic damping?

With the right wheel metal, as the wheel rotates, a nearby neodymium magnet might provide enough drag to very lightly pull on the inter-vehicle couplings. This would be through Eddy currents, not direct magnetic attraction, hence the 'right wheel metal' is required.

At standstill, the drag is zero but as the wheel starts to rotate a subtle drag is provided, enough perhaps to keep couplings in extension?  The drag would increase with train speed, so subtle stuttering of the loco at speed might be cancelled out.

    Once an engineer...

No, they have their own a class 50 coming.

Below Hornby's minimum number of wheels? 😉

The LNER P1 has enough wheels but is it shiny enough.

The Jubilee is a good candidate but would Bachmann also realise this and be working on a new model, same as the 8f in Hornby’s case.
The humble Jinty could be upgraded Hornby’s model must be close to 50 years old and Bachmann’s is knocking on now and is lacking the in some detail.

Has im concentrating on 1980/90s for now at least. A class 86 would be good,

  13. Well I was wondering would it be in bad taste to ask for class 31 601 In pink?

I’ve always liked the livery I don’t know why, I was put on a course of antibiotics, but they didn’t work, I still like the pink.

I had thought about which manufacturer I’d like to see do this livery, I think I would be happier with the Bachmanns deluxe edition personally.
