    Now utterly confused as to what distinguishes a 'passenger' engine from a 'goods' engine.

      Well, a passenger engine is clean and in a smart crimson lake colour, with 'Midland' on the tender, whereas a goods engine is dirty, ugly and has LNER on the tender.
