Only 3 months since the last update !.
The servos for Figworthy station are now all set up and working, and I think I've got all the droppers I need in place and connected up.
With a bit of luck, that is pretty much all the electrical work done (until I return to the narrow gauge section), so work can now turn to the more pretty bits.
I've decided to put some scenery on one of the off scene bits. Whilst this might seem daft, this particular bit can be seen, and it gives me somewhere to practice doing scenery before I start on the bits that are supposed to be seen. Nothing too ambitious, just a short section with a scenic break at each end (a hump back over bridge in each case), and a shallow cutting between them. So far, I've painted the section immediately adjacent to the track in a sort of muddy brown colour, fiddled around with some MDF to make a back drop for behind the bridges (and a short box section tunnel painted black inside to help the break), and over the weekend, I've got my rails rusted, and put some ballast down. The ballast is currently drying, so it will be interesting to see how that looks next weekend when I remove the loose stuff. I'm using Carr's ballast (a mix of the light and dark), and I've tried using the technique of painting neat PVA onto the baseboard and then sprinkling the ballast onto it.
A couple of pictures for your entertainment.

Yes, you are right and a full explanation on the reverse loop is in the text with the track plan. Essentially it forms a big S under ET terminus and returns just outside of it's entry point. Most of it is hidden to disguise the train set appearance.
Having followed the various incarnations of ET, I think the one thing that you can't accuse them of is having a "train set appearance".

Garforth Class 101 Selby to Leeds City May 67 J0895
Nice to see a picture of Garforth.
Had I been in my bedroom, a minute or so after it left the station, I would have been able to see that train from my window, albeit from 3/4 of a mile away.

Also, does anyone know if these coaches have been reviewed in the modelling press yet, please?

One thing I noticed and can't remember having seen on here is that the coach has all-wheel pickup. This should make fitting lights easy. I was also wondering if it is possible to fit a sound decoder into the coach, given that the space for such things in the loco is very limited.
At Railex this year, Lionheart had a 7mm auto coach and loco (I can't remember if it was a 14xx or a pannier). They were using a sound chip that covered the auto coach as well as the loco.

Thanks for that. The locos are taller than I imagined, from what I could see of where the line went under the A63, I assumed that they would be not much bigger than the underground locos.

Some industrial steam for today taken by Dad around Micklefield colliery.
Thanks for those, I used to live nearby, but missed it.
My recollection is that there was a narrow gauge line that ran from Ledston Luck colliery (a couple of miles to the south) to Peckfield colliery, did you get any pictures of that ?

Having followed this topic for some time, I was looking forward to seeing Much Murkle "in the flesh". Today I had the opportunity to do so at Cheltenham, and I was far from disappointed, the photos are good, but the real thing is better.

Great to chat with Jamie today at Cheltenham, it really is a lovely layout.
I was also able to pop in to the Cheltenham show, and as Rob (37114) says it is a great piece of workmanship.

Graham,
Adrian,
I am writing this away from home and will check details on return, but I have used Howes 'generic Class 15' chips with the Class 15s as featured here, and Coastal Sounds chips with my Class 16s. This is a very different sound, and the clip below will allow you to compare:
It is not easy fitting the round ESU speakers in these logos, and in the last one I used a new 'Sugar Curve' one which fits well in the space available in the front of the long bonnet.
Regards,
GrahamThanks for the details, sounds <groan> as though I need to have a discussion with Howes.
Nice hoppers in that clip.

Another brief video clip, this time showing an as yet unweathered D8233 departing Buntingford having left a van and grain wagons at the maltings. The loaded coal wagons will be dropped at other stations along the branch - or did I just forget to unload them before taking the video?! This is the Class 15 currently undergoing a complete re-build and I am longing to see it eventually running again.
Very nice.
What are you using for a sound chip ?

Oh dear, 13 and a half months since the last update.
I've been busy doing other stuff.
Still some progress has been made in dribs and drabs, and I've now reached the point where the main track laying is completed, the servos operating the points are set up, and all the droppers are in and connected up
Next job is to make sure that all the frogs are switching the right way, then I'll look at putting the power on, and I might even run a loco or two (imagine that on a model railway).
So a couple of pictures showing Figworthy station.

Hi All,
Would someone be able to tell me if there are any UK heritage lines that are linked to the national mainline network?
Thanks
Matthew
Wensleydale and Weardale.
Are the Middleton and Ecclesbourne Valley lines still connected ?

What is the plaque along side the track, and is this the now closed freight avoiding line ?

Who else is still up then?
Me.

A device for cleaning the third (live) rail?
Yes, it was an ice scraper for the third rail.
Thanks.

What is the device under the buffer beam, in front of the front wheel ?

Hi Adrian
Ted Heath's 3 day week....it was to suppose to save power and therefore coal usage. While all my mates were on a 3 day week I wasn't, I was working for the CEGB at the time.
I was trying to do my homework by Tilley lamp My recollection is that school kept going whether the power was on or not.

Hi Dave,
Yes the winter of discontent power cuts. I was at college on Cottingham Road in Hull at the time, but don't really remember power being cut off to the college. However, I do remember having to go swimming to a pool (Albert Ave baths) that wasn't allowed to heat the water! It was so cold that the chlorine in the water wasn't dissolving properly. The water was very cloudy, and we came out blue. Think it only happened once and then the baths closed. Can't have been very healthy.
Also Vesta Curries, our introduction to the delights of Indian cuisine!
Kevin
I don't remember any power cuts during the winter of discontent (78/9), I do remember plenty during the 1972 miners strike and the three day week era (1974).

A couple of pictures from the loco shed gate, (well when I get around to making the wall and gate they will be).
Both loco's (45xx & 22xx) by Bachmann.
Water tower is Wills.
Shed is scratch built. Still needs gutters and down pipes and doors, weathering etc. Been like this for 15 years plus, so no hurry.....
Stone work is scribed Das and roof tiles from wall paper. Not entirely happy with colour of roof. Was painted with a Humbrol slate colour I brought cheap many, many years ago, but it came out greenish. Maybe someone can tell me if there are such things as green slates?
Cheers, Les
Green slate does exist, have a look at Honister in the English Lake District. there may be others sources.

The south gable/transom is now fixed in position, having successfully fixed the new tie braces -
... next paint the new styrene members, and fix the apex vent structures
Craftsmanship/Clever really doesn't do justice to this.

I'm sure I've seen a photo on a thread on RMWeb somewhere, of the coach sidings of a seaside resort - from memory one of the southern coast resorts - which was taken on a Saturday, and shows the sidings absolutely packed with rolling stock from all over the country.
I keep searching, but haven't found it yet.
Edit:
Ha! Found it:

What are the carriages closest to the camera ? They appear to have the door ways extending into the roof.

A few hours late - the latest pictures of the progress on the fixing of the train shed roof structure
View from the Concourse end at platform level
The curtain wall is only placed in position - still requires a great deal of detailing, etc.
View over the Station & CLC goods yard area
The gable end transom placed but not fixed - the external platform extensions and canopies continue from this point to the right
View thro' the West side - the white patches will be covered with brickwork detailing, etc.
The span section links/transverse beams fixed, and await the over span ties and windbracing
View from outside the North end gable - restaurant/cafe building to the left (to be finished and detailed
Views of the East side curtain wall - Platform 8 canopy will be fixed along the length of this wall
The concourse gable end - additional lower level glazed canopy, timber facing and station offices will be added - ..... and the clocks
Working under the roof has been assisted by the use of a bar stool complete with fluffy black cushion
The first part of the West wall is laid by the corner
... work on the Train Shed can now proceed alongside all the other work which is progressing - shouldn't get any excuse for an impasse now
I've resisted the temptation to comment on your excellent work so far, but for me, this takes it to a different level. It is difficult to judge from the pictures, how big is the model ?

A slightly strange looking beast (to my eyes anyway), Is it a trick of the camera, or is the centre axle of the loco unsprung ?
