  1. Rumour has it that hospitals think that cake is a Bad Thing. Adrian
  2. That drags me back 30 years. I forget who the company was (they eventually ended up as part of Virgin), but they spent ages digging up all the pavements in the area putting in cable. At the time, I had a flat, so a group of us asked the freeholder if we could get connected up. He came back some time later and said no. We assumed that was because he couldn't work out how to make something out of it. I subsequently got talking to a colleague who's girlfriend worked for the company. It turned out that they had spent so much money on digging the road up, that they couldn't afford to make any complicated connections, which we would have been. Adrian
  3. Last year, our usual postie asked me to take in a parcel for next door. The resident genius had left a note on the door asking for parcels to be left in the recycling box. When he came around to collect it, I asked him why he thought it was a good idea. "I couldn't think of anywhere else" was the answer. Adrian
  4. Just remember where the B Ark ended its journey. Adrian
  5. Almost true. 40 years ago, the local council had the privilege of employing me. We had a parking area at work resurfaced, and there was more on the lorry than they needed. That evening, chatting to my father, he mentioned that someone had turned up late that afternoon with some spare tarmac, and did he want his parking area doing. Adrian
  6. Presumably not to be confused with the neighbouring Wisbleat and Upwool. Adrian
  7. So you're going for the toned down look this year. Adrian
  8. Cruel, but often true. To be fair, the latest edition is advertising events that are still in the future. Adrian
  9. Don't carp about it. Adrian
  10. "There are three kinds of jazz. Hot, cool and when does the music start" Jill Swinburne in The Beiderbecke Connection. Adrian
  11. Why would people pretend to be animals ? Adrian
  12. Heading into London last night, it looked as thought Dominique's London end was resting on the first pier after the canal span, so perhaps they've started moving it across for the next section. Adrian
  13. I'm pleased to report that my subscription copy arrived at the Manor House this morning. That accounted for this afternoon's lack of activity. Adrian
  14. Looking again carefully, the narrow boats don't appear to have cabins. That strongly suggests that they are BCN day boats (used for short haul journeys), in which case the photo is somewhere in the Black Country. Adrian
  15. I used to have a colleague who wore a badge saying "Define Normal". Adrian
  16. This may be of interest to at least one contributor. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/03/20/wolves-less-dangerous-dogs-brought-back-britain-rewilding/ You might need to turn off javascript to avoid the paywall. Adrian
  17. I got a mention for my suggestion on the play list challenge some time ago. Unfortunately, the mention was followed by the suggestion that I go for a walk, which I thought was a bit harsh. Adrian
  18. Somewhere on (I think) youtube, is a video that someone took of one of the train simulator programs that had been set up as a model of Hartley Bank, showing the trains running backwards and forwards from the colliery to the exchange siding (just off the top of the screen shot). Adrian
  19. Burton Green was on the LNWR (rather than GCR). Adrian
  20. Not entirely. I made an appointment at the doctors last month (yes you can get them). Unfortunately the receptionist forgot to ask who I was, and the penny didn't drop until I was half way home. When I went back for the appointment, rather than use the electronic sign in thingy, I spotted the same receptionist, and pointed out that I had an appointment, but did she know who I was ? Adrian
  21. I should be careful make comments like that, you may well have to fight off marauding bears and hippopatami. Adrian
  22. Sounds like one of the following fits the bill : https://theclassicpedalcarcompany.co.uk/ https://www.pedalcar.org.uk/ Both seem suitably low tech. Adrian
