  1. Very nice modelling Ray. I think the weathered brick is particularly effective.
  2. I think that's quite possible - it was a rattle can and I did shake for the specified time, but somehow it did lurk in the back of my mind that it may not have been enough. I usually like to play safe but I was maybe a bit impatient.
  3. Still waiting. Is it a bit drier? Maybe. No dust on it anyway. Maybe the heat from the brazier will help.
  4. 'Do you know where the kids are?' 'No, I thought they were with you...'
  5. I've been spray painting a resin boxcar and used Rust-Oleum grey primer for the first coat, which dried fine and covered well. I had some Humbrol matt brown and used this for the covering coat but, though it went on well enough, I ran out halfway through. I bought some Rust-Oleum satin brown and went over the Humbrol with this. The finish looks fine but two days on, it's still a bit tacky. Could this be from covering one brand of paint with another, or does satin take ages to dry properly, or can anyone suggest another reason? All the paint I used is acrylic spray.
  6. I was a very lucky boy to get Naples Street featured in the July Continental Modeller. You can also see it at its first outing, a week on Sunday (1 July) at the NCAM meeting in Hampsthwaite near Harrogate.
  7. It's looking good Jerry, hope you find it a nice relaxing project to complete.
  8. Nice little layout, attractive with play value as well!
  9. It's all go at the Can-Freeze Food Company for a while... ...and then all is quiet again.
  10. I've posted some more pictures of my layout and a write-up here: http://mattersofinterest.co.uk/naplesstreet.htm
  11. There are now a few figures on the layout and apart from a lighting frame and fascia it's just about done. Here are some more pictures. I'll be taking it to NCAM, Hampsthwaite on 1 July.
  12. A few more scenic details added. Just a few figures to add, a lighting frame to make and everything to stick down. The gondola and flat car could do with a couple of loads too. In addition to the smoking chimney I decided to install a glowing brazier for added kid appeal! Then I may well call it a day and try to book it in to a few shows (I'm already down for NCAM, Hampsthwaite on 1 July).
  13. Hi Jerry, my HO layout is described here, though I've sold it on now: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/newsforyou/yorkfordpa.htm Among other things, you'll notice the rail bumpers, made out of matchsticks. The vast majority of the stock came from ebay and I was pleasantly surprised at how cheap most of it was, though I think prices have risen in the last year or two. I'm building a new US layout in TT, a nice scale but I definitely wouldn't recommend it for starting off, if only because there's not much available and it can be hard work getting all the bits together. The thread for that is here: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/125680-a-us-switching-layout-in-tt/ Rod
  14. I did find that on my small 52in. long HO switching layout, I could get away with the likes of a GP40 or GP38, and 50ft freight cars, as long as I took a minimalist approach and didn't switch more than two cars at a time. It just extends the scope a bit if you don't want to stick to earlier period short equipment. Having said which I had to add 4 inches to the original 48 to cater for them.
  15. NCAM do a yearly show at the village hall in Hampsthwaite near Harrogate on the first Sunday in July. I took my old layout Yorkford, PA there a few times and will most likely be taking my new TT layout, Naples Street, this year. It's a small show, just one day (tends to wrap up mid-afternoon) and it would be all the better for one or two more layouts and a bit more publicity. If anyone is interested I can put them in touch with one of the organisers.
  16. Well, I only have two, one in Man Utd and one in Chelsea strip. So-o - which one is it? I can't possibly guess.
  17. A few more pictures showing recent additions to the layout. Including the smoking chimney, operated using a press switch on the front of the layout which triggers a timer. Four of the buildings are loosely based on photos of actual buildings in Illinois which I found on the internet. So I reckon the layout is going to be set in Illinois. One final building to place is a small diner, a 3mm Society resin casting, which will be by the roadside at front left. The layout is going to be called Naples Street, for no other reason than that my mother came from Naples. There's plenty detail left to do such as trees, shrubs, road vehicles, rail bumpers and figures. And a few freight car kits to make. There's also a lighting gantry to do which will frame the layout. All in all I'm optimistic it will all be ready for a local show in early July. I will be doing a full write-up of the layout and posting it on my website when it's finished.
  18. I like following TT-related matters but I think this particular thread is being somewhat overused. Would it not be better to start new topics for current projects and leave this one for 'nostalgia'?
  19. Presumably also you have a selection of cars that you could potentially drop at each spot, or some of them at least. That would increase the number of combinations again.
  20. Here are a few more photos showing progress to date - notably, a backscene and a start on some more buildings. I decided to get the basics of all the buildings done before I go round again detailing and weathering them. I'm not too happy with the windows in the right-hand factory, they were done with Excel but I may have another go. The low brick building on the backscene will be derelict and boarded up. It's loosely based on this: The nearmost track at right is intended to serve a team track and scrap yard, I thought something like this mobile crane might fit in nicely: https://www.shapeways.com/product/Q3YDCJSHZ/bekohlungskran-spur-tt-1-120?optionId=3272219&li=marketplace
  21. Made a start on scratchbuilding a couple of industries out of plastic and card. The one on the right is just more or less following the typical design of many American factory buildings. The other one is based on this photo I found: Though mine will probably be an engineer's rather than a paintball arena! Fortunately I found some corrugated paper lying around, which does the job nicely. The window and door are Walthers HO spares. I thought I'd try out that piece of copper pipe for size as a chimney. It will accommodate a smoke unit nicely but maybe it's a bit wide?
  22. Here’s a diversion to while away a bit of time while you're waiting for Santa. It’s a short and simple football manager game, which will keep you amused for...minutes. First, have a look at the instructions. To play the game, download and install. I wrote the game some years ago on a Windows 98 PC and it seems to be behaving itself on Windows 7 and 8. I can’t speak for Windows 10, though I don’t see why there should be problems. Having said which, I no longer have the software to make any changes. The program has been virus-checked. Who will be first to prove they have won the league by posting a screen shot of the final table?
  23. It wasn't a mistake. My system is DCC but I posted the question here because it didn't seem to be a DCC specific issue. As I can still switch to DC as backup, a solution for both would be ideal but a solution that only works for DCC is fine in practice. So for DCC, will the wiring diagram I posted above work?
  24. I need the light to come on whenever the points are set wrongly, as a warning to set them correctly before the loco gets there. Otherwise there's no point doing it.
