    Unfortunately Salvador Dali's dead...

As if the wheels aren't schizophrenic enough, apparently this is the Duchess of Sutherland... Still, have no fear - Cartmel to the rescue with a proper one at 'bargain' price.

This baffling logic is all over Ebay, especially in the car ads. "Needs an MOT but will sail through it no probs" - well go and get one done, then! No doubt you'd be amazed just how far that would go in convincing potential buyers of its roadworthiness!

"A bit of nonsense". Unlike the price, which as per is a lot of nonsense.

My guess is it just committed suicide...

Presumably you're referring to things like this, which he lists as "kit built" but then later describes as merely "repainted, decaled and numbered." Sooner or later he's going to rip off the wrong person. I hope.

It is for one where the nameplates have all but rubbed away and which has a paint job as bad as that! More than a tad out of my price range but good luck to them

Today's Ebay lesson concerns the value of shopping around before bidding, especially if the model is a current commission from a big shop in Liverpool that has a famous bargains list. Just a few seconds spent wisely on the internet could mean you won't end up buying a 2nd hand class 14 with bits dropping off for £93 all in when you could have got a brand new one for, erm, £93 all in

Aww, it is cute, but as you point out, not £100 worth of cute. In much the same way that this isn't £125 worth of cute, either. And as usual the description is enough to make your urine simmer.... "Perfect in all respects" - yeah, apart from the scratched number and lining. "Test run only" - must have been one hell of a test run looking at the marks on the wheels. Who did it, James May?

Fair play to the guy if he can push 'em out at that price. I'm just thankful I can't abide the looks of the prototype HST (or for that matter Network Rail yellow). In the meantime, getting the basic description right: how hard can it be?

    Hornby B1

I honestly couldn't say, nicotine is one vice I've managed to steer clear of! As for the original subject, Hattons have now entered the fray and are doing them for £80/£82...

That's only £10 higher than my current psychological barrier for carriages... (OK, I'll stretch to an extra fiver if it's lit) It's not quite that bad! 30 pints would be nearer the mark, more if you get it from a supermarket rather than a pub.

That's certainly the case here. On my return to the hobby my jaw dropped at the prices of stuff, and whilst I have become a tad more desensitised, locos over £100 are still pretty much off my radar regardless of how pretty they are (or indeed what "realistic" noises they emit).

Absolutely no prizes for guessing who's offering you the unique opportunity to pay £140 for a Hatton's limited edition that's still available from Hattons for £115

OK, it's Wrenn and it's in good nick, but geez, £375? Or if you have slightly less deep pockets and are willing to consider Hornby, gostude to the rescue!

...and two of them are shill private listings. Oh well, post-privatisation isn't my bag anyway (and the retina-searing awfulness of Network Rail yellow plays no small part in that).

And a class 4 that transmogrifies into an N class, apparently.
  20. I said, "Me too. I could tell you a story that would make you cry."
  21. After a Herculean struggle with Hattons' website, Drake should be winging her way towards me. I can always make room for another Jubilee, especially ones at that sort of price
  22. Steam-wise I'd say the Jubilee, Britannia, 6100 and rebuilt West Country classes. I'm also going to stick my neck out and say the streamlined Coronation in wartime black. Not keen on them at all in blue or maroon, but in black they just seem like a completely different beast, somehow. Maybe it's just the old goth in me... For diesel I'd have to plump for the HST in original livery. Other than that I've always liked the class 40's utilitarian looks and class 02s are just adorable 8) As for electric, I can't get excited by any of the locos, so I'll say the APT with black cab window surround.
