Out of interest, some rather good examples of Geoff Haynes' weathering...........................

Geoff describes his methods in his new book from Crowood. These are a mixture of airbrush, powders and dry-brush work.

These are the property of Ian Wilson, and are in O Gauge. They're made from kits or modified RTR, and run on his ironstone branch.

One of the best ways of achieving realism in railway modelling is weathering. Why do some not do it?

I thought something looked odd with the brake gear, and it is a bit, not seen that combination of handle and brake setup before. You learn something everyday.

(It is correct, just a bit weird)

I've only occasionally been on a smart motorway (there aren't any round here) but isn't it the idea that you met no issues because the variable speed limits held you back.

Perhaps 70mph would have got you through no problem too, as I said I don't know these smart motorways are supposed to work.

J3 is out of smart section

  3. M42 is bonkers, speed limits flashing up and changing just before you get there.

On way back was 60 so got to 60 and shoved cruise on.

Stayed 58-62 until 70 limit, seems to only correct if it goes out by 2mph.

J3 was badly signed, nothing but 50 limit signs and no cones, nor any sign of issue.

A limit nearer J3 and queues warning may have stopped road users from not slowing down. I was glad I was not tanking as L1 was suddenly jammed.

I didn't make it to Warley this year so to view the videos that have been posted is a nice way to see what I missed. I have just watched the two "modern image" videos on the Warley thread. They are well shot and despite how busy Warley is there is not too much visitor chatter in the background, which makes them even more enjoyable.

I am a little pleased that I did not attend because if I had I might have cried or said somethings the owners might want to hear, the diesel loco depot layouts. "You expect to get that much petrol from the tank wagon to go in that storage tank?" "How many reversals to refuel?" "Where is the mainline connection, somewhere under all those houses above the cutting?" "So with that big crane this single road shed is a level 5 depot?"

I would have thought with the wonderful "On Shed" series of bookzines we would start to see some realistic depot layouts, not yet more displays of "My locos are noisier than yours."

I had great difficulty getting to see many layouts, but there were a couple of noisy ones.

  5. Now have 6 vehicles finished except for hand rails and gangways for my Western Region aircon set. The other 3 need 1xobtaining, 1xfinish converting and 1xMk 2 frames.

Worked out need 4 TSO frames and 5 TSO glazings to finish all my Airfix aircons.

Now need to work out IF I need any 2D BSOs or if I can sacrifice them for a 2E TSO.

see my thread on link below for some idea of cutting down the gangway

    https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/139325-scotrail-198788-workbench/page/4/

25 August post for how I did it then if your scroll down there is a comparison picture on 4 October. I could perhaps take a little more off but limited by the back plate that fits in the coach end. See also Westie7 post on the same thread, he cuts out the end of the coach and then recesses the original gangway. If I was to start from scratch again on a Mk2d I would probably follow this method.

    Cheers

    Jonathan

    Both techniques look usefull.

So that is 16 soon to be 18 for set WR CDEF and 12 for set ER 1D

So tempted to modify 1 and resin cast the 30 I need.

So had a look in my book and I reckon for non end simply lopping 1.5mm to 2mm off should work fine, 3 detailed, 27 chopped.

Got some Keen close couplers to fit as well.

My 2ABC sets though are getting Replica B4s as Lima are a bit weak looking,

    Out of my first 6 sets, 1 complete, 1 75%, 1 50%, 2 third done 1 quarter done.

Currently a bit peed off as while glazing fitting I pinged off half the frames on one of my 2F FOs.

Also I forgot how much work to convert to 2F, but when the set goes 50 CDEFFEDEE, so far taken 3 FOs 3 BSOs 3 TSOs, and still need another TSO or 2xBSO.

Out of my big pile only 5 are only detailed.

    1 2C BSO (BSO)

    5 2D TSO

    1 2D FK (FO)

    1 2D BFK (BSO & FO)

    1 2D TSOT (TSO)

    3 2E TSO (2xTSO,2xBSO)

    2 2F FO (FO)

2 sets and not a single out of box, even the Replica ER BG is B4'd air and flush. As to the ER buffet that was done over a year in the end.

Great to meet Tony, Mo and Jesse today.  Definitely a highlight, my abiding memory of the day overall is however summed up by this:

I didn’t feel that there was as much 4mm this year, there seemed to be rather more narrow gauge, O gauge and US/continental stuff than usual.  A couple of nice characterful layouts that did catch my attention, Norwich Central:

    8147CE45-93FF-47FE-9EA4-DA448541B079.jpeg.3562bf32954595dae0089ab9fb01d955.jpeg

    Blackfriars Bridge in P4:

And a nice O gauge layout called Kimble, unfortunately the photo won’t upload.

Warley is always worth a visit, but the long trek from the car park, £17.50 entry price (plus another £16 for parking) and endless traipsing round the huge hall do make for a tiring and expensive day out.

Blackfriars Bridge is one I go to the far end of, nicely modelled but I can see it better in this picture.

About a decade ago it was easier to see the layouts and chat to the exhibitors.

  8. Nice to say a brief hello to Tony and Jesse. Also had a lesson in quartering with Mike Edge.

Cleaned out Shawplan on 2D TSO glazing.

And some good advice on casting with Graeme.

I was the lump with a crutch (damaged vertebra from a fall and a weak ankle from a break).

As to the layouts, to be honest not overly impressed for multiple reasons.

Reason 1, a few train sets.

Reason 2, a few reasonable scenic layouts where someone has vomited various RTR stock on to it.

Reason 3, I could not get near quite a few, got near enough to some.

Reason 4, trains, yes they had one occasionally.

Reason 5, hand of god, seemed pretty common.

Reason 6, lovely layouts, but just did little for me, little running, not much to do.

Reason 7, small layouts with tons of viewers.

To be honest I gave up after a while, I missed some I wanted to see.

Any layout operators unhappy, were you so blocked I could not get to see?

  9. Looks like Stadia is well overpriced.

Rental PLUS cost of game with no discounted options.

Unless Google can get hold of one of the big companies games libraries as an exclusive I do not think it will do well.

But I think wait and see.

Check out chrisf's 116 thread on Prototype Questions, Martin.  All second class for Bristol area suburban work, cabs with 3 marker lights across the front and one incorporated in the destination blind panel at the top, delivered 1960 IIRC.  There were at least two other types of 116 on the WR, with 2 marker lights and a 2-character headcode panel with second class centre trailers and with composite trailers, the composites in sets allocated originally to Tyseley for Birmingham suburban work and the all-seconds to South Wales, though later transfers after the composites were downgraded to second class mixed things up a bit.  I think I'm right in saying that the ER's Lea Valley sets were all-seconds identical to the original South Wales sets.

The Bristol sets were transferred to South Wales or Tyseley in favour of 117s or 118s in quite a short time, but worked services such as Severn Beach and Portishead.

So they were what became the Cardiff sets.

I am quite pleased though that my CF 116 is gangway fitted

I bodged a 116 out of Lima coaches back in the early 80s and still run it occasionally, classic cut'n'shutting.  It represents one of the Bristol area all 2nd class sets without headcode panels, and was cheap enough to do back then, but don't ask me the actual cost as I've slept since then...  It took 5 vehicles, and included filling the ends to get rid of the gangway connection holes, new buffers, and various other bits of 'working up'.  It runs well enough but requires constant cleaning attention to do this!  About 30 hours work.

The old Lima was, IMHO, one of the best things they ever did, with a nice level of moulded detail, but the Bachmann is clearly gonna run rings around it.  Reports of full depth seating suggest it's gonna run rings around the Dapol as well, and a 121 is going to be difficult to resist.

    Bristol 116 sets?

I do not know much about those, just the Cardiff and Tyseley sets
