    Hi Jules

Good to see another update. The vans look good, I wonder if many of the MR ones lasted until the late fifties? If so maybe I need to get one!

    Regards

    Les

    Hi Les,

According to the instructions, they lasted 'until the 1950s' for freight. It also says that they may have lasted in departmental service upto the 1970s.

So I'm sure you could justify one in some form!

  2. Dragging this thread up from the archives...

When the thread was started, I knew I had these two pictures of Ashburton (shewing 6412 and 4555) but I couldn't find them.

I found them while sorting through my Dad's files/boxes/etc (is it really 12 years ago this October...).  I have no idea of the date, or who took the photos, but thought they might be of some interest.

  5. Hi Chris,

Thanks for the comment and 'likes'.

Currently there is no access from the yard into the field.  I did want to put a gate in, but when trying to arrange the buildings I was running out of space to fit it all in, so ended up with this arrangement.  Possibly not ideal, but I think it is an improvement anyway.

  6. Hi Tony, thanks for the comment and suggestion.

I probably  should have mentioned that the works are not quite finished yet!  I have planned either a bush or a tree to hide the join, but I need to add a vent or two to the building before fixing in place.

  7. Another post!

Just a few shots of a couple of locos/trains.

Earlier in the thread I mentioned I had picked up a 4575 prairie and renumbered it as 4588, well here are a couple of pics:

I removed the G W R and replaced it with Great Western, the first attempt on this tank had the whole name slightly sloping down, I re-did it in the week, and I'm still not convinced the 'Western' is quite level.

  8. Hello!

Thanks for the likes and comments, apologies for not responding earlier, but Christmas got in the way, as did getting our wedding sorted!

I have found a bit of time here and there to do a bit of work on Mayshill, and also operate whenever possible.

The latest minor update is to the dairy area.  I have added another low building to the left of the main building.  This was a building on a previous layout that had a wooden exterior. To match the rest of the dairy, I re-clad it with brick plasticard (not sure of the  make, might be SE Finecast), added barge boards, gutting and downpipe.

    P1090090.JPG.efc4c78d5b2c5a792af4ce26d0998602.JPG

I haven't yet decided whether to have the additional small 'hut' in front on the new building or not.  I think both brick buildings need a few roof vents/pipes.

    Another pic:

    P1090092.JPG.93e424eec0c9ec99be29ce17bf2b8762.JPG

The next are that I would like to attend to is around the barn.

    P1090091.JPG.b72259efb93ff08451919b6aa0b7d034.JPG

This was sort of just dumped here! I think I will create a small yard, with a stables etc.  That's the plan - not sure when it will happen!

    Cheers

    Jules

  9. Another few months or so pass... :)

Not a lot too report from Mayshill.

The latest inappropriate addition to the wagon fleet is a sausage van!

I picked up one on a whim at the Taunton show, and then looked at how I could upgrade the chassis.  I found that the same 'shop' on Shaapeways that I obtained the bogies in the post above did a one piece chassis.  So a few clicks and a couple of days later, it popped through the door.

Here is a pic of the chassis and in the dairy

  10. As promised earlier, here are a few pics of my sausage van with the printed chassis from 81E.

After a trip to the NEC, I picked up some 2mm brass tube and 1mm steel rod as suggested and have just fitted the centre wheel/axle. A test run on the layout confirms it goes round all curves and through all points.  Many thanks for the tip!

I used the chassis as it comes.  I my opinion, it is pretty good straight out of the box although I'm sure improvements could be made if desired.

  11. Hi Mikkel

Yes the do run and pivot well.

I did have a couple of issues with them:

    1. The axle boxes were completely missing on one side of one bogie!  Fortunately, I had a couple of spares from a wagon kit (as the coaches are too short I don't think anyone will notice the wrong axle boxes!) The printed axle boxes seem to be attached by only the thinnest bit of plastic, so I can see how they might have got knocked off.

    2. To ensure the wheels/axles didn't slop around too much, the brass bearings shouldn't be pushed all the way home.

Will I treat my other two clerestories to them?  I'm undecided at the moment.  While they improve the look no-end, I'm not sure I'm convinced about the overall quality to justify spending the money.

    Jules

  12. As there have been a couple of wet evenings/mornings over the last couple of days, I have had the chance to perform a minor upgrade to an old Triang/Hornby Clerestory coach.

    P1080486.JPG.375ac53465ea3aff8d8127e136991491.JPG

I cannot remember how I found it, but came across this site.  After having a browse, I decided to purchase a couple of the Dean 8'6" bogies to see what they would be like as replacements for the BR Mk1 bogies as fitted.

First thing to do, was take the coach apart, remove the brass rivet and bin the old bogies.  Next, fit brass bearings and wheels to the new printed bogies and trial fit.

    All seemed ok!

    P1080488.JPG.aec1c617939dac53ca7c630313c12a91.JPG

The bogies were then painted, and the coach re-assembled.

After comparing it to another original coach, it was riding a bit high, so off with the bogies, remove a bit of the moulded boss on the underframe and refit!

    P1080516.JPG.794ef931b4e716aaa8720434579d0e4e.JPG

I also added some internal partitions to break up the empty view through the carriage.  It really needs a repaint to match the other coaches, but it will do for now!
