  1. I am in the US and may just be accustomed to somewhat different practices. Couldn't Hatton's simply sell undecorated versions? Anyone who wants to complain about liveries could simply paint their own. Of course, this would negate some of the discussion here.
  2. I would also appreciate a scanned copy if anyone has this article. I am the US and old magazine content is difficult. johnhutnick@gmail.com
  3. How exactly do you download high resolution images from Getty? I went to the site and found the photo with the wagon turntables. The download that I got was 42.8kb.
  4. Just for humor, I looked up R2179. It is 2000-2001. So is it any good or still junk?
  5. At this point, I think that I may have to give up on a metal body streamlined Duchess. Having looked at Hornby ones on Ebay as best that I can, it seems that R2179 may be a good choice, due to price and it is loco drive. Does anyone here have experience with this model or what I should pay?
  6. I am late to this thread. Can you please clarify which model is actually HO scale. This may be of use to British HO modellers. Thanks.
  7. Further, I looked at the Ebay listing for tender bodies. It shows me 39.99 postage to the US.
  8. From DJH: "Thank you for your request, unfortunately we only sell complete kits". So I am out of luck on a metal bodied Duchess, unless someone here has a better idea, or I buy a 214.50 kit.
  9. I am glad that so much discussion has come up on this subject. However, unless someone here has an idea, it seems that I am unlikely to find a metal boiler casting quickly. I am not ready to buy a DJH for this project.
  10. Thanks all for the replies. I have maybe a crazy idea that I would like a Streamlined Duchess to run with Wrenn trains. But metal, not plastic. Obviously I am not going to find an original Wrenn going cheap. From what I can see, prices on Keyser kits are high at this time. And a Duchess kit is uncommon. There was a Jamieson kit, but are they out there somewhere? DJH has a kit, but 214.50 GBP without motor/gear and wheels.
  11. I thought to do a loco to simulate the Wrenn streamlined Duchess. I have written to one Ebay seller of this model to ask if the body is metal. If it is plastic, there is no point.
  12. Is it possible to take the body from an Amercom streamlined Duchess and put it on a Wrenn chassis? I think that the Amercom body is metal. I am in the US, so I do not have much exposure to this sort of thing. Thanks to all.
  13. So are there to be Genesis coaches offered in Highland livery? I do not see this in batches 2 or 3. And seemingly undecorated models are not being sold.
  14. If you are careful, you can put pieces of black heat-shrink tubing over your white levers.
  15. I appreciate the manual. I am in the US, and never had a copy.
  16. Can anyone provide a color photo with a straight on side view of any single stall loco shed? I am building an O scale micro, and would like to print such a photo full size for 7mm to use as a background.
  17. Since we on the subject of goods shed and trusses, Historic England has this and one other goods shed publication as a PDF. https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/publications/railway-goods-shed-and-warehouse-in-england/the-railway-goods-shed-and-warehouse/
  18. I am in the US, so many things in some UK discussions do not come naturally to me. Can someone please provide some details so that I can look up the District Railway terminus that is referred to.
  19. Where does the Dinky Coles Mobile Crane fit as to approximate scale? I am in the US, and the mobile is what is mostly on Ebay. The Yard Crane seems less common here, and postage to get one from the UK is high.
  20. I am in the US and may view models somewhat differently than the average person here. First, charging batteries is for me insignificant. I run a train for a while, it lights up, I am happy. Will never get charged. On a layout, the Hornby brake baggage will look different. Otherwise, each of the other Hattons and Hornby coaches versions will appear to me similar. Details for more or less are not that important to me. So now when will someone manufacture a GWR Duke or Metro or 517 ?
  21. What is "Lydlow Goods" please? I was unable to find anything here or with a general Google search.
  22. Attached for general interest is a track plan drafted by "Twentefan" on forum.3rail.nl in 2009. It is a 2-rail plan.
  23. First, the King class that I measured is HO. It is one of the few British HO locos ever made. It is much smaller than a Hornby King. It is 1964, 1 of 30. If you search for Gem brass HO GWR King Olympia, or some combination, you will find it on Worthpoint. Now you may then say - oh, it is overscale - but that is what has been made. Next, I took out of the box(first time) a Roco USATC 2-8-0. The cylinders measure 34mm, and they are small. I also went through my collection of HO brass parts, and the tiniest cylinder block was also 34mm. Then I measured a number of various HO drivers, and they are typically 22.5 - 23 mm width at the crankpin holes. So assume that we try to somehow achieve 31mm overall. Set the piston rod centers 3mm in from each side of the cylinders. 31 - 6 =25mm. Now the drivers are 23 mm wide. So we have 1mm to spare on each side. There simply does not seem to be room for side rods, main rods and outside valve gear. I am in the US, so I am no expert on British. Does someone here know of steam loco models that are actually British HO scale width?(not inside cylinder)
  24. I measured outside cylinder block width for a PFM HO brass Santa Fe 2-8-0 and a brass UP 2-8-0. These are relatively small engines. They are 36-37mm wide. Also, I measured width over crossheads at about 32mm. The 8'10" cylinder quoted earlier at 3.5mm = 31mm. So if you want a scale width, US engines would be generally too large. I tried an 0-6-0 CP switcher - 34mm. I then got a GEM GWR King, which is 33mm, with tiny cylinders set well ahead of the drivers. So what chassis are suitable? And how to build anywhere close to scale cylinder width using HO drivers, which are overscale?
  25. I am in the US. If, for example the Mantua articulated cylinder block is too wide, then what US chassis are a proper width? What width in mm do we want? I can measure a lot of different engines if anyone needs the numbers.
