  1. HI I have just been in contact with ABM Railcraft and I have been told he has now closed the business for good. I was just wondering if anyone has approached him about his art work for the various stations and buildings or has any other information about what was in the range, before he closed.

  2. Hi Guys I have got into this subject via a different route, but all the same I managed to get a copy of the book Building in Miniature from eBay for £25.00 and in fair to good condition.

I have had an email from Peco about doing a reprint and they are fine about it as long as who ever wants to do it, they run it past them first to check for copyright material they may or may not hold.

The one person who told me about George was the late Bob Barlow so I have him to thank for this.

I also believe that there was also a book on scenic work by George? Does any one have the details of that one please?

To be honest I think it would be better to combine as much of Georges work into one new volume, its not to make money but to get his work out to a whole audience what do you think?

  3. I got this from Keith Vingoe today whose knows a thing or two about the L&BR

As far as I know the concrete sleepers are in store at Rowley Moor Farm.

As to the locations where they were installed - I know of three definite. Woody Bay and Blackmoor Stations and a section between Pilton and BT. There could well have been others. A prime candidate would have been the cutting north of Bratton Fleming.

    Cheers

The likely hood would be places along the line where it was always wet and this part of North Devon does have a lot of wet days.
  4. Interesting, do you know where or what situations the concrete track was used?

I know from photos that the L&BR Trust have that some sleepers where installed just south of Blackmoor, I think it was more for a test than a wholesale relaying programme.

I am not sure you can still get it but if you can try and obtain a copy of the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway Yesterday and Today ISBN  0-85361-537-3 this gives a lot of views over the line as it was and as it is now.

    .

  5. have you looked on the L&BR website yet?

For what it is worth Bratton Fleming was built on a slope so you may want to think about how you are going to include that in the model is it to late to suggest to pushe the whole layout to the back of the boards a bit more? it will give you a bit more space for goods yard, just a suggestion

I will add to Mike Bellamy's invite to the 7mm NGA at Burton with a invite to Stafford. (But please no hanging trees to dry on the Saturday morning)

No doubt I will see you at Swanley this year, it's been a few years since we all went down on the train.

Not missed a Swanley for many a year.

Bad thing is there is no bar any more ( pub up the road)

    Terry

Hi Terry yes there is no bar at Swanley as such any more, but they do have cans available not Ideal but better than nothing.

  7. Hi all for those of you who knew him the late Dave Brewer (Meridian Models) build a 4mm model of the Snailbeach loco shed and part of the site which was fantastic, I am not sure if he finished it, but the point was the engine shed was not square, I know this as Dave measured it up after he started to build his model and had to start all over again but he wanted it to be as accurate as possible, so if a building interests you go and have a look if you can, as this is one model that would have been wrong had it been based on photos only.

  8. Hi Sir Douglas I too was under the impression that i wouldn't need to model everything, but according to the two books I have just got by Bernard Rockett most of the above did work at the Port at some time Post 1940 -1955.

The biggest problem as you can see, is that there is not at present a suitable Hunslet Quarry tank kit to modify in to what I need, I am told that the Chivers fineline one may be a bit too small, but I will get one at Expo-ng in a couple of weeks time to try it out anyhow.

Some of the more well known locos will have to be scratch built, which is something I have not done a great deal of in 009.

I do think, that just for now, I will only build those I can make from those kits which are available, the big problem is to wait for the chassis to be made, I will be having this conversation with one small manufactures in the coming weeks at Expo-ng in Swanley.

I am not entirely sure what you mean in your question. Could you be a little more precise?

Hi Guys sorry  I meant was one part of the line running from st georges-de-commiers to Le Mure d'Lsere and the other part running from Le Mure Ville as a short demo style operation?

    regards

    Colin

  11. Hi Peter

Your layout is on the list for coming to Expong, I am not sure when that will be, as that will be down to you, the only request from Greenwich is the layout is to have enough prototype rolling stock to go with the layout, so a lot of slate wagons to build and a number of locos as well.

I am going to do some research in to what locos are avalable in Kits.

Can you send me your contact details via a PM and I will send them on to the Show Manager who can keep you informed. Over night hotel accommodation will not be a problem

Oh and don’t be surprised if you also find yourself the centre of a magazine article request as well.

A layout like you have deserves to have the publicity to show it off to the full.

    Regards

    Colin

  12. We have Expong in Swanley Kent coming up next month, if you would like to send me some details I can copy some of the photos that have been posted if that is ok and with some contact details some one may be interested in it.

I can also send your details on to the editors of the 009 newsletter if you wish as I am sure they would highlight the layout.

Like I said before If I had the space and the money to do someothing about the layout I would be most interested, I am surprised that it has not been out on the the exhibition circuit a bit more, it cerntainly would be a layout for Warley and it is the sort of layout we would have at Expong as well.

  13. It would be a shame if that happen, if I had the room I would be talking to you, I would have thought a chat to the guys at the heritage railway or at Penrhyn Castle could have found a home for such a fantasic layout.

  14. Hi Allan superb buildings,

I was just wondering about the lamp store being closer to the signal box and maybe what would it look like the other side of the Signal box with some PW junk to boot.

I feel it could also do with either a home or a shunting signal in there as well and would it be possible to add some lighting in the box and the good’s shed at this stage? The reason I say that, is I feel it could give a twilight feel to the diorama when the lights are low.

    regards

    Colin

  15. Hi All,

When I can move the bottom of my mouth away from the floor and the above photos, I finally found the book I was referring to and that is creating realistic landscapes for model railways by Tony Hill (some one is now bound to say oh him of this list......) for those that want to get a copy the ISBN No is:- 978 84797 219 4. I have nothing to do with the book (usual disclaimer) etc except as a satisfied reader.

I was once told by a Mr Don Murrells that a good layout is made by more than one person and after all these years he is still correct.

Now if we could get Allan and Iain to do the building’s, who else could we ask to build the dream layout???????????? And what would that dream layout be of ?

    Colin

  16. Hi Guys and thanks for the welcome.

I have just found the link and had a look as well. It then occurred to me, that I had seen this else where, and guest what it is one of Allan's Peco books (Book 2-Railway Buildings) it was a good investment of all of £1.35p at the time along with the other two as well all for less than a fiver at the time.

I have to admit they have always been a source of inspiration for me I also find that by visiting some of the estate agents website’s this to can also be a source of inspiration as well for the odd building.

This I find this very useful if I want to get a generic style of building for a certain area in the UK.

I also take Allan's point of view about Trees yes it is difficult to get realistic looking trees, but I think it was at last year Chatham show someone was making some and they did look the part I did buy the book and it is in here somewhere.

He spent time making trees mainly from different thicknesses of strands of wires. As I recall it started with a trunk then split down to two or three main branches then they where split in to five or six secondary branches and so it went on until you got to the very fine wire of the phone cable. Once at this stage all the main bits had been soldered together (not all over) and then dipped in a very weak solution of coloured dental plaster and left to dry for a few days I think he then kept dipping the whole thing with photo mount and just used fine scatter to build up the finished thing, they did look the part.

When I find the book I will get back to you guys on this thread with the details, as i was very impress with the results.

    Regards
