    Hi Peter,

One issue unless I misunderstod it is that you do not deduct VAT for EU orders , so we will end paying additional VAT / Customs handling  charges?  Is this correct or are you registerd for VAT for orders to Ireland like Hatton's was?  ( Not ment as a complaint, just a general query).

    Regards,  John

Eu Vat has changed allot. We collect VAT on orders under 150 Euros (excluding shipping cots) and then fill in lots of boring time consuming paperwork to tell an IOSS agent what we are sending and where. We then pay them the VAT and they send to your country. You then only need to pay import fees. Orders over 150 Euros will have VAT refunded. Thanks Peter

    Peter,

many thanks,  however,  the "current" stated postage cost for worldwide is a definite turn off to a potential worldwide customer who may be none the wiser as to the new process being trialled.  Hopefully,  the possible revised postage cost will make it more attractive to those who wish to use your site in the future.  I purchased a lot of spares pre-covid,  however, the massive spike in shipping cost during covid made purchasing spare parts uneconomical.

During covid there were less commercial planes taking goods overseas and more surcharges we had to cater for. Thanks Peter

    Peter,

perhaps true for UK deliveries but this is a direct copy from your store website.

"Worldwide £0.00 up to £100.00 £39.99 By Royal Mail tracked Airmail service. Orders between £100.01 - £500.00 by tracked Airmail £39.99"

I haven't changed the wording yet as we are trialling prices in the cart and seeing what people purchase at what weights. When we have worked this out fully the wording will be altered so if you try a fake order you will see postage is cheaper. Thanks Peter

Well, that's what I was quoted a year or two ago for an order consisting of a few small, lightweight, items. However, I've just created a dummy order for some Bachmann coach wheels (GBP 13.32 excl VAT) that shows a much lower shipping cost (also GBP 13.32, as it happens), which is better. Thanks.

I agree with you regarding multiple items on eBay, with or without the GSP!

Thanks for taking the time to check it out, allot happens in a year. Even Hatton's closing.  We do try our best with shipping but it is so complicated if the site doesn't understand size and weight and the investment to get it to is eye watering against the amount of overseas sales it would benefit. Thanks Peter

Taking the above two items in the picture, and putting into the ebay basket, and the peterspares website basket, putting in shipping to your address and using the cheapest postage… I seem to get a different answer to yours…

indeed with ebay I get  first class postage !

I have to be honest I am confused buying from your site or using the ebay site and needed to pick / chose the better route to buy because of anomalies like the ones highlighted.

Maybe you can check if somethings wrong ?

    IMG_8670.png.a569c5a8f42eac144c68f7b9b9a53836.pngIMG_8668.jpeg.7fda024b6e5e7302068a7872d61628e4.jpeg

There are no anomalies. On ebay UK postage we can stipulate postage on each item as large letter or box price or courier. Our website doesn't know sizes so starts at £3.99 2nd class £5.00 1st class then courier and special delivery on large heavy or flammable items.

You will see I was commenting on the complications of overseas postage but you are commenting on UK postage.

    Thanks Peter

You've never had to use the Global Shipping Program, have you? For a typical second-hand item, it typically results in a cost about three times the price of the actual item.

That's not a great example, because if you order direct from that supplier they charge a MINIMUM GBP30.00 for overseas shipment, which is what I think you can see there (ordinary post, not the GSP).

As this is a picture of my items I felt the need to add a comment. eBay shipping is a nightmare we can either make everyone pay for each item separately or make people await an invoice. I don't like to o that so we let people combine however eBay has no way of combining items and assigning correct postage appropriate to weight and size. They also take 15% fees from any postage price we add to the site. This is why we have a higher flat rate up to 2kg on ebay.

The best thing to do is DON'T buy from ebay come to our website www.petersspares.com and get the item cheaper than RRP and cheaper postage. It's that simple. (We do not charge £30 via our website for small items.)

    Thanks Peter

Had a look at Peters Spares re. Hornby TT spares.

Limited range and most are reasonably priced but some, I wondered if the prices were typos, £35 for two A1 pony truck wheels and axle!! Surely that can't be right?

I have asked Hornby re some of the odd pricing and I can't paste the rely but basically thats what has been decided by Hornby and it's unlikely it will change. All we can do is stock the items you may or may not want without ur markup and VAT on them. Thanks Peter

My comment was more a general observation - e.g. Markits handwheels £6.20 ebay, £5.61 on your site. But understandable due to the extra fees.

Meanwhile, back to ebay - not sure if this has moved from optimistic to delusional pricing... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/256142617206

We discount Markits products in store / website but Dapol spares we don't. Thanks Peter

One observation (not a defence or offence) is their website has lower costs - no ebay fees to cover). Whether that then makes the prices more realistic or not I don't know.

The prices are the same on ebay and the website for Dapol spares. We suffer the hit on the fees through ebay as people like to use it. Thanks Peter

Could someone please explain Peters Spares pricing to me?  Dapol Class 26 (N gauge) available around and about for anything between ninety and a hundred and ten sheets, often with free postage or go to Peters Spares ebay listings and the chassis alone is £110 plus the body they have so obviously just taken off it is another thirty quid PLUS postage!!

    They are taking the mickey.....

If you had asked Peters Spares instead of the forums you would get a speedy reply that is. The RRP of a Dapol class 26 is £148.25 Older models and used ones will be less.

Re the comment of taking the body off of the chassis NO we did not. If you follow adverts or posts on Dapol spares it clearly says DCC supplies have sold us the bulk of the Dapol spares they used to carry. All spares came to us with recommended prices to sell them at. All we are doing is selling them ass supplied.

    Thanks Peter

  12. Hornby have had an agreement at some point with some stores to sell them TT however they have yet to offer it to their Tier One accounts like ourselves. We can't stock it or even order for customers requests. Spares however are available to anyone so we have purchased what is being offered to us.

Check which oil is in these type of lubricating devices.

The first one I had, which had a well known retailer's name, came from a model raiway dealer and sold for model railway use (I wont name names in case I've got the wrong one) was useless, the oil was way too thick and when I had only used a small amount the case spilt with oil going everywhere. The case had gone brittle.

The next was one bought as clock lubricant, this was ideal as it was a very light oil, ideal for models, unfortunately, again the case split but I had it a while and used a reasonable amount.

I currently have a Peter's spares one which has a much better container, the oil is very light.

It is more expensive (£8.75) but IMHO better

    I doubt it.

Fixing your washing machine by replacing its brushes, and replacing the exterior panels of it to remove a scratch are not the same thing, but its a similar comparison.

I do think that repairs is however a revenue opportunity.

Next few years were all going to hunker down on purchases and therefore maybe focus on looking after what we've got. Thats going to create an increasing spares demand.

Its noteworthy that no one* at Warley had a “returns” pile this year to gorge on… in the past everyone had something, and with a 2 year gap between Warleys the pile might have been expected to be larger, not absent….

That said, providing spares to allow repairs maybe in compliance with the law but not in spirit of its intentions… At £18.50 for 4x buffers for a Dapol 73 (£6.75 x2 + £5 p&p for 4) someone is clearly making a nice profit.

it would very soon be cheaper to buy and dismantle a second hand 73 off ebay for c£70.

    https://www.petersspares.com/Dapol-1109871-class-73-oo-gauge-buffers-oval-red-pair.ir

    * Oxford had a basket of basket cases.

I have been made aware of this post re the buffer pricing and have popped on to clarify. I'm not sure how much you think parts are purchased for but here's an example.

Dapol make the parts and have their trade price. In the past a previous holder of these parts DCC Supplies added their markup or was informed of a RRP including 20% VAT.

We have just purchased all the parts from the retailer and so far kept 95% off the prices the same. The ones we have changed have a small cost of a few pence added for say changing 4 of an item to 2 if we feel no one would want 4 and the cost covers the bagging and tagging them plus staff wages to do so.

This part consists of three separate parts put together in the factory and they are also sprung.

Postage on our site is £5.00 minimum as the site doesn't know what's large and what's small but you can get them in our ebay shop at £2.50 postage. There you would save £2.50 and we would pay ebay 15% fees plus 30p transaction fee for the privilege.

6.75 - 15% (1.01) -20% (1.13) leaves £4.31 (or via our website £5.31, we still get PayPal or card fees) less the trade price X amount doesn't really leave much seeing as we have to bag every item delivered to us and label it as they arrived loose.

That's before the usual running costs the profit goes to pay for Gas & Electric (that costs allot more the homeowners bills, wages, rent the list goes on.)

    Thanks Peter

That is very unusual.  I too have never seen a Lima 0-6-0 with traction tyres though it does make sense as they have pick up on front and centre wheels.  However I have never seen a traction tyre on the wheel without a drive gear on anything Lima either.  I wonder if these were very early production examples. The Class 37 and 47 tyres might fit, obviously the 50/55 ones are far too small, otherwise the Lima 0-6-0 wheels are a bit unusual being around 17mm from memory while Hornby 0-6-0 are nearer 19mm.  Generally I find slightly 1mm or so undersize traction tyres work as well as or better than "Correct" size ones.

I had several J50 and Pannier chassis over the years, I fitted crankpin fitted centre wheels to some, and computer motors but I finally gave up, due to pick up issues and sold most of them on eBay.   I stlll use Lima Diesels exclusively in the garden and have a nice 4589 on my mantlepiece and a Pannier with a Bachmann chassis and a J50 waiting to become a Q1.

I must have had an off day as we have no models in stock to check, my memory told me they didn't have tyres.

    Hi all,

I asked this question in the general modelling forum with no luck. So I thought I might have better look here. I asked Peters Spares if they stocked traction tyres for Lima 0-6-0 tank engines. They said that as far as they new they never had any fitted. So no luck there. But looking at the  5  J50's and 2 Panniers I have they all have one traction tyre on the right hand rear wheel opposite the wheel with the gearing. Some of them need to be replaced. I would like to know if any one knew where I could get them. I want to replace them all so will need 7. Hopefully if some one sells them they will come in packs of 10. If not does any one know of a substitute tyre. I did think of the Airfix/Hornby 14xx. But I do not know the wheel size for that loco. The Lima wheel is 17.2mm according to my micrometre.

As of the 1st September Royal Mail have seriously increased shipping cost due to the lack of passenger planes in the air. We had already started sending items at a loss but it couldn’t continue. We have updated shipping to reflect their changes and our flat rate. Until COVID-19 stops affecting the world and travel / shipping it won't come down. Please either stock up to make the affect less or buy latter when things hopefully settle down. Postage overseas has become very complex these days.

unsure on 42 & 52 I believe the gearing maybe different (I no longer have these to check).

ive not added 59 and 66, My gut feel is they are the same, but I dont posess Lima versions of these to check, but the Hornby (Upgraded Lima) ones are the same wheel size as the others above.

The 52 59 66 are the large we have not got a 40 to check them but they should be the same.
