  2. We will open on the 20th April 2021.

Peters Spares Model Railways Ltd team have been working safely in the background getting all your parcels to you and operating a click & collect service on selected days.

We will of course continue to do this as it is the safest way. If you can please order online and we can get your items ready for you minimising any contact. Click & Collect Will operate Tuesday to Friday 10am - 5pm (Please await your email to say the collection is ready not the ‘order confirmed’ email. This just means we have your order in the queue to process.)

Due to the increase of mail orders, we have taken on two new staff and we are training them for our goods in and mail order departments. We are also planning a new till system with a much more functional website (eta 2-3 months). This does all take time to do so we have decided to postpone opening the retail store until Tuesday the 20th April and we will be letting customers back into the whole store. We will operate a traffic light system at the door and a one-way system with social distancing so we can limit the number of customers inside to four. (We would therefore prefer customers to shop alone if possible).

We have installed a large screen at our counter for extra safety.

Our new temporary opening hours from 20th April: Tuesday – Friday 10am - 5pm

Click & Collect Will operate Tuesday to Friday 10am - 5pm

Our phone system will also be going live again with limited hours from 20th April: Tuesday – Friday 2pm-5pm (If we can open them sooner, we will but this is staff dependant as we can’t get any more staff in the buildings and social distance.)

This will continue until there are further government changes of advice or more staff availability.

    Thanks Peter

    Dear RMweb readers,

As well as our other wheels we are planning on making some more scale and traction tyre free Lima Diesel Replacement Wheelsets. We have been doing some work already but wondered if anyone has done any conversions with other makers wheels (we are hoping to have a much more cost effective alternative) and how they got around the lack of traction. (I know you can just shove loads of weight in it.) But I'm looking to find out anyones experience and what they pull. Thanks Peter, Peters Spares Model Railways Ltd

Thanks for the update Peter. Are these going to be available for pre-order, as I suspect they are likely to be popular, and snapped up pretty quick. I have a couple of Lima Class 73's i'd like to get re-wheeled. :D

Don't worry we are buying a few! About 2000 of each off the top of my head. The Codes to Look out for are PS76 & PS78 for the smaller wheels PS79 & PS80 for the larger loco wheels. We are working on testing traction unplaced against plated so not sure if you will need to add a touch of paint or not but it will be decided by pulling power.  We will sell them in singles as different locos require different amounts of dummy wheels.

Thanks for all the advice. The Peters spares link is really helpful, I've a few Lima wagons I could upgrade too. I sent him an e mail about replacement loco wheels and he said they are " in progress" but no date for completion yet.

We are still working on the Drive and Dummy bogie wheels in fact the last sample landed a week ago. Things are happening slower with Coronavirus taking up all the tooling companies for PPE. Keep an eye on the website for them and soon to arrive are more Lima wagon wheels 3 hole and 8 spoked. Thanks Peter

I remember that being mentioned about 18+ months ago but I heard nothing more.

I have several models I would like to upgrade. I imagine others may have too, but I guess it depends on whether the manufacturer feels it is a worthwhile production?

And pricing is all over the place, Peters Spares being another wanting a penny under £30 for one while not that far from them TMC have them at almost half that price, £15.29

We are selling this item now at the current market value after selling 70% or more at the RRP of £16.99 We advertised pre orders of this item at £16.99 for months since the launch of the item in early September. We ordered 100 and were cut back like all retailers were. Our order went down to 80. We have raised the price in line with the market value and to stop customers buying 10 or 20 and selling them on as we have had happen for a few years now. We have given plenty of opportunity to buy the item or pre order at the lower price. Thanks Peter

How can they get away with claiming on their website that £29.99 is the RRP when the Hornby website shows otherwise.  I don't know if they've had change of owner / management as the lad I used to deal with isn't there anymore, whoever's in charge now is getting very greedy with the pricing.

We have had a change of two staff member but I am still here the owner of Peters Spares. On the 9F's I didn't even try removing the opposite end motor clamp. I didn't

see the point as both locomotives were and still are beyond further use. I should

write to Hornby with a moan, the reason is they are still making and selling 9F's

therefore in theory replacement parts could be available. However it'll probably

be a waste of time as they pass all spares responsibility on to Peters Spares.

Here are the two 9F clamps :- Evening Star's first

I didn't photograph the tender problem because I knew I could make a

plasticard insert which initially seems like it'll be fine. However without

a working locomotive I can't do the final proof testing.

While it's difficult to throw stones at Hornby, they didn't use contaminated

materials by choice, but with current 9F products they should make spares

available. I have no reason to think they have changed the design as those

earlier products were fine - Until !!

    Hi everyone,

I would just like to comment on the mention 'However it'll probably be a waste of time as they pass all spares responsibility on to Peters Spares.'

This is incorrect information. Hornby supply a spares list to any and all shops that wish to purchase some. If they are available or available to order parts can be purchased by anyone. We DO NOT get all the spares passed to us. Thanks Peter Corbitt

Peters Spares want £30 to post the Markits £2.61 whistle to me in NZ...   this is new, they used to be about £6.

I see a bodged alternative fix as a more attractive option!   I with I had a spares department!  :)

    Hi there,

As of the 1st September Royal Mail have seriously increased shipping due to the lack of passenger planes in the air. We had already started sending items at a loss but it couldn’t continue so we have updated shipping to reflect their changes. Until COVID-19 stops affecting the world and travel / shipping it won't come down. We can't individually quote postage as we are charged based on an average of all parcels going overseas on each day. Peter

    Apologies.

The remark was made somewhat tongue in cheek Peter, I wasn't expecting instant service as my qualification of your comments about staffing levels hopefully confirmed.

    Mike.

Thank for your reply if you do email I can look into your order. I had to explain our position as internet lounge in cheek moments can ruin hard worked reputations. Naming places as sluggish could deter people using us again. Thanks Peter

Peter's Spares seem a bit sluggish, there is a note on the website front page saying about the situation, still hopeful of de!every of my order from a few weeks ago.

I have recently successfully dealt with H&A Models, Lanarkshire Model Supplies, Eileen's Emporium and Silver Tay.

    Mike.

    Hi there,

if you can give me your details (preferably direct to sales@petersspares.com) I can look into your order.

To clarify your 'sluggish' remark: For staff safety I have had to close the store and phone lines and send 4 out of the 7 staff home leaving me and two packers. This in itself has slowed us down and also everyone is at home doing mail orders so we have more than double the orders to ship while short staffed. As of today we have only had 2-3 days in 2.5 weeks where some post went a day latter than normal. Thanks Peter

Thanks for the update, very interesting.  I suspected as much.

I remember reading an article by George Dent in Model Rail some time ago regarding the fitting of those Ultrascale wheels, but wondered at the time how losing the traction tyres would affect performance.  I thought the article was inconclusive so didn't bother buying Ultrascales due to price. I reckoned you'd need to add lots of weight, but then would the pancake motor be strong enough to move the loco without overheating or even burning out, and at what speed?

So will Peter's be any better?

Peter, have you tested pre production samples of these new wheels for performance please?

We are still when time permits looking at there wheels but as everyone mentions traction is really lacking when the tyres are not there. Thanks Peter

Hi all, my recently purchased N7 is a beautifully smooth & quiet runner but doesn't like some of the points or the diamond on my admittedly coarse track and non-prototypical layout: investigating, I found that the wheels are significantly under standard OO back-to-back.

I spend a lot of time building kits and am happy to repair older RTR stock but one decent tool I lack is a wheel-puller that could back the wheels off a tiny amount without needing full dismantling. Given how new the loco is, I asked Oxford whether they could help rectify and was told they have no servicing or repair facilities. Peters Spares didn't want to know either.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

And can anyone recommend a suitable wheel-puller for this job please?

Thank you in advance, Chas :)

Hi there, I think 'didn't want to know' is a bit strong. We can't get parts and have never taken this new model apart so would not want to take on a job that could get worse rather than better. We were honest about this over the phone! Thanks Peter
