Plan deleted.

I've been back on anyrail having a faff with the layout design. I find it very hard to produce the slightly curved mainlines and platforms so unfortunately I went back too them being straight. I've tried to alter the approaches to improve access to the bay platforms and also reduce wrong road running as much as possible. Here is the tweaked plan.
Any comments welcome...………………………….

What era is it? 70s? 80/90s Modern. I now see its North Road. It was bombed and IIRC and the rebuild not finished until after steam ended. The lower platform was severed to provide terminal bays at some stage. originally North Road was a through station with termini at Millbay for GW and a separate SR terminus at Friary so little terminated there. Later Cornish locals and Devon ones terminated at North Rd and the track layout was hacked about as cheaply as possible to accommodate this.
The model needs better access from main lines to the lower platform terminal bays, both from and to Devon and to from Cornwall as the full size has, judging from my 1990 Quail Map and Google, as you will be running half way round the room wrong road at present. Adding the extra platforms would be good esp Cornwall end so Gunnislake and Saltash/ Cornwall services can wait together.
I do agree that the terminal bays need better access, but I’m not sure how to achieve that in the space? I would love to have been able to fit the extra platform in, but again I don’t see how I could do that either. I’m just not very good at track plans I’m afraid.

I do like the look of that gentle curved effect, fits the space better and doesn’t look cramped. Would most of my layout plan need scrapped as it would no longer fit?

I've attached a picture to show the arrangement of my baseboards.

Has anyone ever modelled any 16 tonners with the slits cut into the sides? Am I right in saying this was done to prevent overfilling?
Always enjoy seeing pictures around the blyth/ashington/cambois area, thanks for posting!

To my eye, you've compressed the station approaches but not the platforms, meaning the platforms dominate, particularly because they're straight and parallel with the baseboard.
Now the west end of Plymouth station is quite compact, the east end is much lengthier. And the platforms are not dead straight but slightly curved in places.
Has the approach of modelling the approaches to a station - with (most of) the platforms being off-scene - been considered and discounted? If it has, and you want to stick to this basic plan, then I think you need to begin to curve the platforms around to the left on the left-hand side of the layout.
Also, remember tunnelling is expensive and the GWR wouldn't've put the start of the station throat in the tunnel on the right; they'd've started the throat after the tunnel exit. A road bridge would present less of a problem on this front.
Hi Tony, thanks for your reply and thoughts. You're right in saying the platforms dominate, but that's kinda what I was aiming for. I do think though that a slight curve to the platforms would look better. The only issue with curving the platforms on the left of the layout is that the board it links onto is only 2ft wide, i'm not sure that would give me enough room for the curve? However I could possibly curve the right hand end, like the real thing if I start the curve where the column is, i'll look into that option. You're quite correct about my use of the tunnel mouth as the scenic break, I got my terminology wrong, I meant a road over bridge, as per the real thing.
This picture is the view looking up towards the road over bridge. It shows that the platforms are pretty much straight with a curve to the left just after the platform canopies.
This picture shows the road over bridge that I will try and replicate as the scenic break.

Hello chaps, thanks for taking the time to check my design. I've back into the garage and realised I had forgotten that half way down the main wall there's a column that juts out about 9''. As a result I've flipped the whole plan. I've attached a picture of it flipped. The dark grey rectangle on the plan is the column
To address some of the questions raised. Era is as before, 70's to 90's, quite a broad timeframe I know but I do have a broad range of stock. I like class 52's with rakes of blue grey mk1's, large logo 50's, RES 47's on mail trains, right through to fag packet FGW.
Flying pig is correct that I've pruned a whole island platform, purely because I didn't know how to fit it in without losing platform length and making it look cramped. I am open to suggestions if a way can be figured out how to fit it in?
Space for the layout. It's in the garage which is 16ft by 8ft. The scenic area down the long wall is 3ft deep, and goes round to the fiddle yard down the opposite wall.

Good evening everyone. After the abandonment of my last layout idea (some of you may have seen the proposed Penzance-ish thread) I've done a lot of thinking and re-evaluated what I actually wanted my layout to be. I still wanted Western themed, but I decided on a through station rather than a terminus. Attached is what I have come up with so far. I'm slightly nervous posting this up for opinions, as this is where I ended up last time and got bogged down and gave up. I'm hoping this layout has a bit more scope. So, what do you think? It's very loosely based on Plymouth. Minimum radius curve is R2.
I appreciate you taking the time to give it a glance over.

Nice work there. I really do enjoy seeing people revitalising older models, looks very rewarding. Must try something similar myself!

Did you do this?
Apologies for the delay in replying to this. In short, no. It was a project that got knocked way down the list when I realised I couldn’t get hold of the etched underframe bits that JSW used on his wagons. I did get a couple of Cambrian SPA kits to rob the sole bars and springs from, bill bedford W irons, buffers from Lanarkshire models and some VDA brake handles from stenson models. The handles aren’t correct but they’re a compromise, I don’t think the springs are quite right either but never mind. Just need some roller axle boxes and I’ll have a bash at them. I think I’ll have to use the linkages from the Hornby model, and file them down to make them thinner, not sure what else I could do about that?
Now that you’ve jogged my memory I’ll try and dig them out and have a crack and post any progress on here.

Liking the look of this. I know TMD layouts have become a bit cliche nowadays, but I really like them. I enjoyed reading through your progress so far and look forward to more. Happy modelling.

I really like the look of your track work, it flows so well, very pleasant on the eye. Those boards look super too.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve a actually got the full version of any rail, only trouble is that I can’t seem to come up with anything workable. I either over complicate things or end up with something that just looks boring with no operational interest.

I’ve had two baseboards lurking around my garage for ages now, one measures 4ft x 2ft and the other 4ft x 1ft. I’ve been keeping them with a view of building a micro layout. Trouble is I’m useless at drawing up track plans, hence why the boards have sat around for so long. So I thought I’d turn to my fellow RMWebbers for help. Can anyone come up with a track plan or refer me to any layouts of similar dimensions that I could adapt?
My main thought had been based around a wagon repair works. Era would be quite loose, say BR blue to sectorisation. OO gauge.
Any help would be gratefully received, I really do need help

J8619 is a brilliant reference for weathering. In fact the whole picture would make a good diorama.
More excellent pictures there.

My brother has a rake of these wagons. I seem to remember them being supplied with tension lock couplings with an optional knuckle coupler in the box, don’t think they’re kadees though.
Sorry that that’s not all that helpful.

Looks awesome! So pleased I took the plunge and ordered a rake.
Well done chaps, and thanks for sharing the pictures.

That is a brilliant light show, what have you used, and how? I need to copy!!!
I used these from amazon:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00SA12GRQ?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
I used two packs, they come with little sticky back pads or little screw in brackets, whichever you prefer. I routed the cables down the sides, then I’ll need to drill a couple of holes in the bottom to pass the cables through.

Just out of interest, would a 47 in trainload construction livery ever have hauled a rake of these wagons in either ARC or Yeoman? I’ve just “found” a Heljan 47 in the back of my cupboard that I forgot I had .

Or here is a slightly tweaked version of the original plan. This hopefully addresses issues raised by @TonyMay concerning the lower left bay platforms and the approach to the upper island platform. Again comments welcome regarding either plan.
Thanks in advance.
