  1. Was looking at the Manchester trams. Is it me or does anyone else think having to have platforms to enable people to get on and off is one of the most stupid ideas for a tram ever.

      Trams don't *need* platforms at all - look at a lot of European systems where older stretches of line still just have roadside tramstops - Dresden for example, where the [low floor] trams run down the centre of the road, and traffic has to stop to allow people to alight. Not even onto a kerb, just straight on to the road. Trams carry manual ramps for wheelchair users.
