  1. I don't think they'll be quite that much. Although the 40's have TBA next to them on the Bachmann site, even the 'new' Deltics (with factory weathering- which bumps the price up a few more pounds) are listed at £132.95 and that's before any retailer discount.

That being said, I'm certainly glad that I bought my two when I did- one split box machine, now renumbered to 40127, and the green centre headcode version, which has since turned blue and become 40181.

I just require a couple of disc headcode machines now and I'll be a happy bunny.

  2. C9035 is a rare sight indeed Dave- an Austin Maestro (without a rusty tailgate as well.)

Please say it wasn't yours! My parents had a red 'A' reg  MG Maestro,(A595MJN- with talking computer!) from new..

The chap half a dozen doors down from me has a Montego, but usually keeps it under cover- however, if this is through courtesy for it's age and (relative) rarity, or from sheer shame is debatable! :jester:

Great pictures as ever Dave. Thank you.

  3. I do seem to recall that my £100 voucher and the broken loco arrived a few days from each other, so fingers crossed a body may still arrive brittannia.

mikesndbs. My records show that I received my replacement 31270 on 14th March 2013 after having read in the model railway media that Hornby had replacements in stock.

Regrettably, I don't believe that they have had any replacement 270s for a while now, (though I'd be happy to be corrected) so you may have to settle for the voucher.

On the plus side, you should receive your old bodyshell with it's obvious sentimental value back.

  4. I suggest sending just the chassis block back to Hornby after removing absolutely everything from it. You may get a new block although I believe they are now out of stock. If you send the whole loco and you get a £100 voucher (only valid direct with Hornby), you do not get the loco back. The £100 will not buy a new super detail 31 from Hornby (they are more than £160) even if there were any for sale. Sending the block only, you may end up having to improvise a chassis for your 31 and have £100 to spend on the Hornby website. Not ideal, but unless they have the chassis blocks available, this will be the best outcome.

You don't get the loco back you say? Well I did. Twice.

My 31270 was replaced like for like a year or so back with the original returned to me. And my Dutch 31110 was replaced with a £100 voucher, which became a metals sector class 60.

The Dutch 31 was also returned- it was the exact same loco, as I had removed some of the grills as a precaution as these were needed for another project.

Just mention in your covering letter when you send the broken loco to Hornby that you'd like the loco back and it will be returned. HTH.

  5. I placed an order with Hattons this afternoon and noticed when I went to checkout that the only £4 postage option was via Yodel.

As my preferred courier is Royal Mail I thought I'd give them a call to see if this was possible.

The helpful chap I spoke to informed me that it maybe to do with the weight of the parcel, (My order weighs 2200 grams) and therefore would cost more than £4 with Royal Mail.

Perhaps this is why despite stipulating Royal Mail on previous orders, they have been despatched with other couriers?

  6. Indeed, I did, but they were all the same.

I have a policy of not having identical locos anymore, other than, er 47s

Having said that it would be hard to do I think as Hornby released 31111 as a blue skinhead, but you'd have to be careful as that was one of the rotten ones, or repaint 105 from rail freight grey.

    What I really need is a 50.....

You should be safe using a 31111 Rob- I don't believe that these were ones affected by chassis rot. My 111 (with a chassis swap) is now 31450 with it's armoured windscreen.

  7. WILLIAM. If indeed that is the case, then why haven't Bachmann released other flush front peaks as part of the standard range?

Do you honestly think that Bachmann or any other mainstream manufacturer would alter the tooling of a model solely to produce a limited edition model, without cashing in on their new tooling by releasing other 'ordinary' locos from it's class in their main range? I think not.

The Modelzone model of Ixion may well have the seam on the nose, but does it have working lights? No.

Another give away is the box. The old type. The new tooled peaks, (of which the first to be released was 45053) came in the current style box.

So it is of the same vintage as the model of Royal Marines which Modelzone also produced, (which also goes for stupid money second hand) ie. the older tooling.

  8. Nope, sorry Phillip, Ixion is the old tooling.

Quite why Bachmann haven't at least announced the flush front peaks with the new tooling is another of life's great mysteries...

Having said that, I recently picked up a factory weathered (yuk!) class 46 D186, and I'm toying with the thought of it becoming 45106 in late 80's 'celebrity' green.

So my guess is that next year the Collectors Club will announce... 45106 in late 80's celebrity green!!

  9. "Having found that the chassis was broken at one cab end (the body also has very minor cracks at each corner - but that's fixable) on my weathered 31 270 I returned the chassis to Hornby for replacement a few weeks ago. So far I've received a cheque for a refund of the return postage cost, but as yet no confirmation that a replacement chassis will be supplied FOC or otherwise ?  Perhaps they do not have any stock at present."

Update 17/9/14  Hornby have now confirmed they cannot supply a replacement chassis, due to supply problems etc, however they did send a voucher for £100 to be used on their web-site. Excellent service overall, considering the age of the faulty loco.  Very pleased

Has anyone had their faulty chassis returned ??

With my first 'returnee' (31270) the loco was replaced with a new loco and I received the old body shell back- which was repairable.

My second loco to go back was a 31110. By this time Hornby could not directly replace the loco, so I was also sent a £100 voucher (with which I bought a new class 60, now in Metals sector livery).

As I needed the grills from the 110 body for another class 31 project, I did ask for it to be returned in the covering letter.

Good as gold, Hornby returned the whole broken loco which, now after having donated it's grills may well be turned into a train heating Toffee Apple.

  10. I'm thinking of grabbing a D369 from Hattons at £77 and repainting it Rail blue, probably going to be 40160.

Has anyone updated the headcode box version to include the outer nose front handrails ?

Apart from the handrails are there any other changes that would need to be included ? These 40 detail differences really are a minefield !!

(Sorry if this has been covered in the previous 39 pages, but I couldn't find any info despite searching.)

You could always turn you green 369 into 40180, as it didn't have the outer hand rails. Problem solved!

I'm going for 40181 with my D369. A former Springs Branch machine and one of the last to be withdrawn. (1/85)

  11. Other than Bachmann's initial announcement, no mention is made of what stage the model is at in the latest edition of the Bachmann Times that arrived through my letter box this morning.

Although a quick look in the 2014 catalogue the arrived with the club magazine today states (on page 66) that 40 of the class were built.. Oops, let's hope that Bachmann are getting the silly errors with the class 90 out of the way early!!

I too would rather have a Mainline liveried 90 over I/C Swallow, but I'll happily settle for anything that ran in BR days.

Edit, I have just noticed that the catalogue also states that the class were built between 1961-64... Oh dear!

  12. I agree, John. 'Tis strange, but not unheard of of late. I'm sure recently (I can't remember specifically which) items have been released and in the shops, only for Bachmann's own website to show that they were 'due in the next 30 days'.

  13. A quick look at one of my old spotters books (spring 1990) and I see that I footplated 90028 at Manningtree station whilst it was on crew training.

That was before it became Vrachtverbinding, which makes me wonder- BCC model for 2016/17, a blue and yellow 90, or a red and white one? (90130 looked too similar to triple grey IMHO.)

One or the other would be on the cards, surely?

    Apologies for the frothing!!

  14. I very much doubt that a major manufacturer such as Bachmann would 'pull' a loco once announced ThaneofFife. People would tire of that approach very quickly.

For instance Bachmann continued with the LMS twins despite the Dapol model running in parallel with it.

What I am mindful of though, in light of the availability of some recent models (class 40, Polybulks for example) is if you want one, once released to 'buy them while they're hot' before they sell out.

  15. Without 'breaking' anything I followed you instructions Crewlisle with my locos and managed to get both with their pantos in a 'half' stowed position.

I then tried to replicate the procedure, resulting in one now being fully locked down (thank you) and the other loco's panto not playing at all (sod it!)

'Crewlisle man speak with forked tongue- there be witchcraft round 'ere!!' (I'm now off outside to point at the moon )

More observation and practice required by me I think on this one I think.

Edit- because computer didn't like the word bugg3r.

  16. Forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but I could have sworn that when I bought mine the panto was 'locked' down in the stowed position and stayed there.

However, much as I try to replicate this (for a drag, or sat in sidings) I can't persuade the panto to stay sat in the lowered position.

Am I missing something, being thick, or is this also a problem for others?
