There were detailed differences across the range but on the major one of jib length then the following may be prove useful should you be looking to create a model not catered for in the initial Oxford releases:

    CURVED JIB - SHORT

NER (x2), GSWR (x1) and NSR (x1) not catered for at present (not 100% sure as to jib length for NSR one)

Forgive my ignorance but is that G&SWR or GS&WR?

  2. I've had a quick look and it looks like what has been agreed is a funding package of £400m to support economic development on both sides of the English-Scottish border. One project that might benefit from some of this money is an extension of the Borders Railway.

In the agreement which can be found here: http://www.borderlandsgrowth.com/ it only talks about "The UK and Scottish Governments will work together through the deal to consider the potential to extend the Borders Railway. "

  3. Thank you for that link. I don't know how consistent the directories were but I note that Allnatt does not appear in the 1914 Directory of Reading, which does have entries for Earley, though there are two other Allnatt grocers, one in Sonning and one in Sindlesham. In the 1915 index there is still an Allnatt in Sonning but the Sindlesham one has gone. This makes me wonder if a relation has taken over the Sindlesham business and and branched into "military contractor" as an addition occasioned by the war. Unfortunately if that is the case it doesn't help with the 1909 goods service but I'm more than happy to be proved wrong. Once again thanks for the link.

Here's a little snippet from an article on the Bracknell Railway Society website, describing goods workings in 1909, so a dozen years after the Bushey film:

"The 1019 Brentford-Reading goods arrived next, at 1200. It called only at Staines and Ascot before Bracknell and after brief shunting it left at 1210. This train conveyed wagons which were brought to the L&SW from the Midland, North London and L&NW Railways, over the North and South Western Junction line from Brent and Willesden to Brentford Yard. There an engine sent from Nine Elms collected them, providing a link to Reading from the North."

Thanks for posting the link Stephen. In there it said, 'The 1019 fast goods from Brentford to Reading stopped at Earley “when required” to “put out skins"'. Forgive my ignorance but does anyone know what the skins were? And even if they were simply animal skins, for example, why might they have been putting them out in Earley?

I bet for the vast majority of today's children their first railway experience is more likely to involve steam traction than any other form.  They might possibly reach a preserved/leisure type railway by electric train but I suspect the steam engine and Mk 1 coaches on their destination railway will create a far greater impression.

This may well be true and goodness knows you shouldn't extrapolate from one personal experience but...

My son fell in love with the Pendolino at an early age and his excitement the first time he got on one far surpassed that of any visit to a preserved railway. His favourite model of mine is the Pendolino as well. In spite of my efforts to re-educate him. :unknw_mini:

  6. I keep seeing about them constantly cancelling trains on the evening local news, but can't find anything much on line.

One day this week they had NO services running to London. Another day, an advertised service took it's passengers to Doncaster and advised them to join other services, before returning to Hull.

    Anyone shed any light?

I think this story sheds some light on the issues: http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/single-view/view/hull-trains-managing-director-steps-down.html

  7. He said significant... I'll give you L&YR though - a couple of very numerous classes, if not quite on the scale of the DX/SDXs, Coal Engines, and Cauliflowers. A Matthew Stirling H&B 0-6-0 or a James Stirling G&SWR one would be rather nice though!

Did the Great North actually have any 0-6-0s?

    Stephen,

How can you possibly claim the G&SWR wasn't significant? I'll have a Smellie Class 22 over the Stirling, thank you.
