Evening all,
I'm slowly converting my n scale american locos to DCC and every installation guide recommends using kapton tape. However, I'm wondering if there are any alternatives to it thats readily available in the UK. I'm sorry if this is a silly, simple question but I'd more rather seem silly than fry my locos!
Thanks in advance,
Lloyd

I looked at the CM article today and I have to say very well done Ray! I was a little surprised you didn't thank your good friend Mr A. Beer in the conclusion however.
All the best,
Lloyd

Your weathering looks spot on there Dan! I remember a while ago seeing a photo of a boxcar not to dissimilar from your one on railpictures that a hobo had frequented for a while and as a result, had a funny sort of char mark along one panel where he'd built a fire up along side it and let it burn for the night.
Keep up the good work,
Lloyd

That looks brilliant Rob. The ballasting looks absolutely spot on for the industrial area to me it seems like it needs a touch of green. Just an idea though.

I'm looking forward to seeing this develop Dan. Just don't let Jordan see that gondola! Sorry F-unit...

That certainly looks the biz Rob. Are you going to add clear gloss into the potholes when you do them to make them full or just leave them as is?
Keep us posted,

That looks stunning! Did you build the paste up slowly and let it dry between coats or just lather it on? I cannot believe I've missed this thread so far, I must follow it now!

Dan,
I've watched you build this layout on here and its inspired me whilst I've been building my layout and its one reason I changed fully from modelling UP to BNSF. The layout looks brilliant and I can't wait to see it at Eastleigh today.
All the best,

That looks brilliant Rob. Have you tried CG textures for building? Dan recommended the site to me and its all I use for my building now. Its a site full of building textures so you can bash whatever building you need.
All the best,

I've been waiting for an update on this layout. The suspense has been killing me! I think the layouts come along brilliantly although i do believe some of your miniature rszidents should have laid off of the turkey. I remember looking at bar type signals a while ago and I favourited this photo HERE to refer back to. I hope it helps.
All the best,

Thanks Roundhouse. I'm stuck between either the proper mrc sd70mac sound decoder or the digtrax sd40-2 sound decoder. Both have mixed reviews but i think I'll go with the digitrax one because they sound more reliable. However, a few reviews say that the decoder cuts out a lot and you must install the supplied capaciter. Will there be enough room in the loco for the vapaciter as the speakers looks to take a lot of room as it is!
All the best and thanks for all your help.

Thanks for the help Gary. By the seem of it, the sd40-2 sound decoder is a perfect fit for the sd70 frame. Also it seems theres enough room for the speaker also (i hope).
All the best,
Lloyd

Thanks adrian for the advice but i was hoping more for a direct drop in instead of programming as i wanted an easy loco to start on. I know sd40-2s and sd70macs have differant engines (one being a 645 while the other a 710) but would the sd40-2 sound be passable for an sd70mac? Or would the GEVO engine be passable?
Sorry for all the questions!

Thanks Gary for the advice. Sorry but i completely forgot to mention that the loco is an N scale SD70MAC from kato.

Hello all,
I hope this is the place to ask a few questions about the MRC-1644 SD70 sound decoder. Firstly, can anyone comment on how good it sounds and also how much modification to the shell you have to do? I've never installed a sound decoder so I'm hoping it wouldn't be much hastle.
Thanks in advance,
Lloyd

I think it's high time I went back over this thread and got inspired ready for starting my urban micro build.
Reminds me to get back into gear with my micro layout!
Is scratchbuilt out of card, walthers do one (where i got my idea from) Geo Roberts printing,i think!! or city classic do something similar
Ray
Thanks Ray. Think i may have to "borrow" that building and use it.
All the best

This looks really lovely Ray! So atmospheric and urban. What is the building in the 3rd photo? Is it a kit or scratchbuilt?
All the best,

Those look rather nice. I know a quaint tea room that that looks very Victorian if you'd like me to get the photos of it i took if your interested in building another one for the layout. I must admit i've checked this thread every so often just to see if anything news been done. Victorian locos and such like appeal to me you see...

Thanks guys for the help. I shall wire the frog to the beginning of the point so the blades always have electricity. Talisman, i always felt insulated joiners were a waste of money, i just leave a gap between the rail. Also, from checking,i believe all of my diesels would go over the point frog if its insulated so i may try this but i'm still debating.
Lloyd
Edit: Forgot to mention a few things.
-
Thanks guys for the help. I'm using american diesels so their wheelbase is quite long which is why i considered changing them to deadfrogs. Kevin, the points are n gauge code 55 (I always get track codes mixed up!)
Lloyd

Thanks guys for the information. I've never really done wiring before (Help from my MRC) so i'll have to weigh up which option will be easier but still reliable

Evening all,
I'm trying to build my new layout and have to install points. However, they're electrofrog ones. Is their a specific way to wire them or should i cut the wire that makes them electrofrog so they'll be insulfrog?
Thanks in advance,
Lloyd
P.S: they're N scale code 75 points.

Looks rather different to your other loco but i think it looks better. Do you have any plans for the loco or did you make it up as you went along?
Keep up the goodwork

You must use the correct terminology Dan. Don't want to upset those rivet counters...
