  1. Looking through my negatives, I found this photo of 9F 92060 on a Consett bound train. I havn't got the date recorded but I think it was sometime in 1966. I'm also not too sure of the location; I have it marked down as Stanley. Perhaps some of you experts can enlighten me on that?

It was in the transition stage from steam to diesel and we thought we better go and get some photos before steam ended. Having travelled from Carlisle as a pillion passenger on a Triumph, I can remember that the weather was not kind to us! We saw four 9Fs that day (one on ore empties heading from consett) and D5180 on a full ore train.

  2. Ref my phoro of the iron ore wagon on a passing Consett train. To complete the sequence here is the 9F at the head of the train and guards van at the rear. Both slides, being 50 years old, were heavily contaminated with mould/fungus which I have done my best to remove.

BR Riddles Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 No. 92098 heads a Tyne Dock-Consett iron ore train past Tyne Dock shed circa 1964/5

  3. Impressive! I bet it sounded pretty good doing that as well!

As Jo posted, 70801 was used on 6V62 and If I'd not been out with a friend today, I would've headed up Didcot way to catch it. Although it was initially posted that 70803 was to do the honours!

I did capture 801 leaving Eastleigh to meet up with 6V62, unfortunately I was on the wrong side for the Sun. Video is linked below, as the picture not much cop.

70801 was reported as working back to Eastleigh as 0Z77 tonight. So much for it sticking to the Eastleigh to Westbury trips!

As I found out to my cost waiting on a freezing Westbury station this afternoon !!

  4. Here are a few Class 47 photos I took in the mid 1960s with my old Ilford Sportsman camera

A few days old, brand new Brush Type 4 D1525, later to be renumbered as Class 47/4 47422, stands in the shed yard at Gateshead on 23 June 1963. Withdrawn in August 1991 it was cut up by Booth-Roe Metals, Rotherham in June i993

A few months old, Brush Type 4 No. D1795, later to be renumbered as Class 47/3 47314, stands at Darlington Shed in April 1965. Withdrawn in February 2007 it was cut up by European Metal Rec Kinbry in April 2008

New Brush Type 4 No. D1518 at Gateshead shed 7 weeks after being built on 21st July 1963. Later to be renumbered as Class 47 47419. The loco was withdrawn on 11 February 1987 from Gateshead shed GD and cut up by V Berry Leicester in January 1990

A few weeks old, Brush Type 4 No. D1520 at Gateshead shed on a damp overcast day on 21st July 1963, a few weeks weeks after being built. Later to be renumbered as Class 47 47421. 6. I have beem scanning in some old slides for a friend and here a few where he is not too sure about the location, which he thinks may be West Hartlepool shed site. The previous slides in the set were taken at Thornaby. These four were very, very over exposed and I have correctedthem as best as I can. Can anyone conform they were taken at West Hartlepool?

    Howie

Note: I have estimated that they were taken in early 1974.

  7. Here is a photo of D6862 (37162) under construction at Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns works at Darlington on Sunday 21st July 1963; at least I think it's that loco. The batch number is M45 4 and going by the build dates that loco, which is nearly complete, entered traffic on 23rd July. Using this logic, the two locos in the background are therefore L-R D6866 (37166, 37891) and D6865 (37165)

  8. Hi here are some quote from Trains Illustrated - Motive Power Miscellany which are applicable

    April 1961
"In accordance with Midlands Line dieselisation programme, on February 6th D14 with Holbeck men in charge made its debut on a diagram covering the 3.31pm Leeds - St Pancras 'Waverley' and on Feb 20 D15 took up the roster beginning with the 9.19am Leeds - St Pancras"

    June 1961
"As expected, from April 17 the 'Thames Clyde', 'Waverley' and other London - Leeds expresses became type 4 diesel hauled"

    July 1961
"The Canal staff told a reader in May that they expected diesels to be working throughout between London an Edinburgh on the up and down 'Waverley', the 9.10pm St Pancras - Edinburgh and the 10.5pm back by early July"

    August 1961
"With commencement of the summer timetable BR Sulzer type 4 diesels began through working to Glasgow on the 'Thames Clyde' in both directions and some other day and night services. A correspondant who was at Carlisle on June 17 noted another of these locomotives engaged in crew training on the Waverley route and gathered that they would take over the 'Waverley' throughout between Leeds and Edinburgh on July 3 and local trains would be handed over in due course to Birmingham/Sulzer type 2 diesels"

Note that it was the 'regular' trains that were diesel hauled. Having spent most summer Saturdays on Carlisle station from 1961 to 1966, most of the reliefs, especially from Glasgow, were steam hauled during that period.

Here is a scan from the October 1961 TI. The caption says "D10 on the 'Waverley' near Riccarton Junction". This is clearly incorrect as the loco has split headcode boxes.

Below that is another peak on the down 'Waverley' approaching Canal Junction signal box.

  9. Here is a photo I took of a Peak with my old Brownie box camera in April 1961, which surprisingly is not blurred unlike other action photos taken with the box camera.  The loco is D19 just leaving Carlisle on the down Waverley. According to Trains Illustrated, Peaks took over on all Leeds to Glasgow trains on April 17th 1961, so this must have been taken during the first week or so of diesels taking over. Note the lack of a yellow warning panel.
