  1. I am just about to set up my Alkad printer that I got for Christmas. I have resin and stl’s ready to go. I am using waterwashable resin as recommended by Martin of Templot. Yes it’s for plug track. Now I am familiar with FDM printing having had a Ender 3 for several years. Now to my questions.

How frequently do you empty the resin tray and clean?

On a video I have seen about cleaning the guy uses a quick light covering of ptfe spray after cleaning. Is that advisable or was he barking up the wrong tree?

How do you know if the fep screen needs changing?

  2. In Designspark I came up with the following when doing sides for 4mm DEMU. Drew out the side and extruded to 2mm. Then worked out the door position. Then drew a rectangle down to minimum width of .25mm then each rectangle was extruded by cutting instead adding. In my case I then did a Final Cut using the radius of the side. No doubt experts out there will say no there is a much better way but for me it seams to work.

  3. Well done Tom iwill be following this with interest. Just a thought would the grey slate need to to be darker. Also you could use a slightly shiny varnish to represent Welsh sunshine all over.

Would love to know where this goes @KeithHC, for obvious reasons i'm super interested!

Part of my plan for my layout. I am working firstly on modelling Grange road aka. Crawley Down, station. I am trying to build the layout using 3D priting. I have both a resin printer and an fdm printer. The use of the printers covers both track and buildings but also lookinginto rolling stock. Currently I have several DEMUs drawn including the Oxted 3D excuse the pun. But I would like several steam locos. Ok I have the M7 and the H but I still want the following. The C2x both single dome and double dome. An i3 and a K class the last one seams to come up on the wish list but does not quite make it.

How are your plans coming along.

  5. Thanks for the replies. The dimension of 18mm is taken from the drawing I am using and is the measurement from the inner faces of the splashers. In theory with a frame width of 14.5mm and as stated above an approx 22 mm will require a splasher width of say 4mm. This does not yet take into account material thickness yet. Therefore I am presuming that the position of the spashers will have to be moved in by approx 1.75mm for EM gauge. For the front splashers this should not be a problem as they are part of the steam chest. The rear set are combined into the cab and will also be part of the firebox. So that leaves the middle set that will show the maximum positional change.

Spanning the decades at Rotherham today: 1960s loco (City of Truro, named after a 1900s loco), towing a late-1970s loco (rebuilt in the 2020s), being passed by a 2000s DMU.
Bonus points for a circus-related pun for the big top in the old football ground car park!

Big Top it’s not a Big Top. That’s a blow up model of Derby roundhouse……..

  7. At the moment I am working on a 3D design for the LB&SCR C2x. The plan is to produce the model to 4mm and for EM. The drawing I am using is from the Russell book of Southern Locomotives. Although drawn to 4mm scale they are based on, in the case of Brighton works drawings and ga drawings. Now to my question. When I draw the splashers the inner faces are 18mm apart. However the chassis will be 14.5mm and Gibson wheels will have a BtB of 16.5mm therefore the wheels would not fit into the spashers. How do I over come the difference. Do I make the splashers wider or do I move the spashers in to accommodate the wheels sets.

  8. If only I had known. You could have dropped it off here just a few miles north of Thornbury. Also on the way home from here you could have popped in to Elmore on the way………..

  9. Like anything rule one applies. I have been working on a proposed model of eventually both Rowfant and Grange road on the East Grinstead Three Bridges line. As part of the models I want to be able to operate roughly to the original schedule. I have over the years amassed various bits of information. It started off with a bit of the WWT and has grown since. One of the last bits of information has come from the book The District Controllers view no15. This book is a mine of information for the Oxted lines. Loco duties are fascinating. You may have a loco off Three Bridges that might end up as far away as Brighton, Eastbourne or even London working a mix of goods and passenger. So just using one loco to go backwards and forwards may not work for me.
