  1. Rob,

Took me a couple of days when I had the spare time to read through all 109 pages but finally got there in the end... You've heard all the platitudes before, but the quality of your modelling is superb, and the realism and sense of space you achieve is very effective, and don't get me started on the weathering. I am planning a layout similar in size to Sheep Lane, and would love to know how you create your back scenes? As someone who loves the Great Eastern region, I've noticed your apparent disdain for anything LNER. All I will say is have a quick look at the cheap J15's available on the net, you may dismiss it initially, but resistance is futile...

Finally, this thread is a brilliant laugh the whole way through, keep it coming. It's refreshing to see people having fun, there are a lot of people in this hobby and indeed on this forum who take it way too seriously. I look forward to hearing more amusing anecdotes about Norman Lockhart and Molly's warm baps.

    Happy modelling.

  2. Some more inspiration arrived whilst we were away.

I know this area well and am familiar with the music of Benjamin Britten, he created music that can be so evocative of the Suffolk coast, the four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes for instance:

Recently bought that book myself Mullie. Some cracking shots in there, and good detail about how the branch was operated.

  3. I forgot...65460 is also 'out of scope' unless you want to fit the tablet catcher to the (noticeably different) tender - a relic of its M&GN branch line days from c1940 onwards I think. Anyway it was there from the early logo to its demise, by which time it had also acquired red lining (the only one of the class to do so) - but by then it was a Buntingford branch regular.

More anon if I can find/remember it...

I didn't know that about 65460, only thing I noticed is that it has red rods. Alas, the final bulled-up condition of members of the class is something which is out of my timeframe unfortunately - that and the fact I don't have the skills/confidence to detail/alter models other than renumbering and applying a new emblem! Thanks again.

  4. Not much to go on, admittedly as I have not had time to cross reference anything with Yeadon et al, let alone read my notes, but this lot (the lower group) are all from the same batch (batch B70 of 1912) as 65464, so that may set you in the right direction. 'W&VE' = Westinghouse + Vacuum ejector.

Alas 65464 (and 65465) cannot be modelled as is, so to speak, as by the time they acquired the depicted livery they were fitted with the LTE trip cocks (1939/40). Not likely to appear on anything by Hornby just yet...

From L-R: BR number, BR numbered date, 1946 number, date allocated 1946 number, maker (" = Stratford), build date, date withdrawn.

    And some notes on brakes:

    Hopefully useful for now...

    Best,

    Marcus

    Marcus,

Thank you for taking the time to get back to me, really appreciate it. I might go for 65461, shame I can't renumber to a 653xx.

  5. O/T slightly, but in the past 2 days I have twice seen a 450/444 combo (444021 & uid 450 on Friday and 450013 & uid 444 yesterday). I don't ever recall seeing this before - does anybody know if it is a regular thing? (Both times in Pompey)

There is a booked turn for a 450/444 combo on the Poole/Weymouth line, can't remember the specific services involved however.

  6. Give me a day or so - I have Yeadon & RCTS but a busy schedule....

EHertsGER - thank you! I have a feeling that there won't be any suitable 653xx candidates out there, as even if you get past all the minor detail differences, I don't think any of them lost their steam brakes and gained air brakes? Time will tell, look forward to hearing back from you.

  7. This site might be useful, the BR database site in making your decision.

Thank for the helpful suggestion Mullie. I find BR Database useful for stuff such as knowing that particular J15 had Westinghouse brakes and vacuum ejectors, remembering dates and allocations etc but I'm aware that J15's swapped tenders and had various detail differences and as a as a class are a bit of minefield, and Yeadons is supposedly the bible for this kind of thing. I guess if no one knows I'll have to track down a copy myself!
  8. Will someone with a copy of Yeadons be able to help with a renumbering query I have please? I've got 65464 with a late crest which I'm looking to backdate to early crest condition. Whilst I could keep the same number and just change the crests, I would like to have an earlier numbered example if possible, does anyone know of any suitable candidates? And whilst i'm asking, I'm thinking of renumbering 65475 - again, any renumbering candidates for early crest condition? Thanks!

  9. Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but does anyone any candidates suitable for renumbering from 62530 in early crest condition? I picked up a cheap D16 on eBay and wish to renumber it. Thanks in advance!

  10. The two types of pantograph for 350's will be one certified for 110mph running (350/1's /3's and /4's) and the standard 100mph variant (/2's). 350/1's originally had the 100mph certified variant, but when the LM Crewe services were upgraded for 110mph running via Weedon, the 350/1's were retrofitted with the 110mph version, and took some time to be certified, particularly for 8/12 car running. The 350/3's and /4's were delivered with the 110mph pantographs from new.

  11. Kernow has early crest ones for £55 at present.

Good grief, and I thought £75 from Hattons was dirt cheap! Screw the colour of the rods, if I can clear it with 'er indoors I'll be having another one at that price thank you very much!

EDIT: Got permission from Mrs NXEA, so purchased with gay abandon! I'm one very happy bunny right now.

  12. I see Hornby have 65469 with red coupling rods due for release at some point this year. I already have a J15 but this particular release looks rather nice with the red coupling rods, I was just wondering if anyone can advise when it received them? I suspect this was circa 1960 for railtour and shed mascot duties, but if anyone can confirm that'd be great. If it gained them in early 50's then I'll be having one! Similarly, 65471 gained red rods, anyone know when this particular example gained them?

  13. It'll be interesting to see if these will be suitable for BR layouts if these are Belpaire examples, but a great announcement nonetheless, and I will be getting one. As an aside, they did spread their wings later in life as the preserved example 69621 was allocated to Lowestoft in 1957, so people with rural layouts can still justify them.  There's also shots of them at South Lynn on the M&GN.

  14. Only H&P ones so far in the UK and Hattons are shipping their orders now. My local shop had a provisional date of this week for the second lot, depends if they can ship them out fast with all the other goods as couriers are rammed with a big event next weekend . . ;)

Thanks Paul, having lost out on my pre-order for Dodo at Invicta due to Hornby not providing them with enough stock, I'm desperate not to miss out on one of these little beauties! Would love all three to be honest but I can't afford that.  :drag:

  15. Just phoned up my local-ish model shop (Addlestone) and luckily had some left in stock so managed to get one delivered, I knew they would be popular but didn't expect them to sell out nearly everywhere!

Was that the H&P one? Just wondering as my pre-order for Dodo is with them and I haven't had any notification of payment required, unless I've missed anything!

  16. Despite being well out of my sphere of interest (Southern Region EMU's mainly), I've pre-ordered Dodo. It looks to be a cracking model, an absolute masterstroke pulled by Hornby and it deserves to succeed IMO. This is probably the model that I've been the most excited for, ever. Just got to build a layout for it now!

  17. Just been checking through some of my old books and came up with:-

    Ripple Lane 31/05/88 85020 ?

    Ripple Lane 17/02/89 85031 ?

    Ripple Lane 11/08/90 85003 ?

Stratford 14/06/91 85101 on ford vans

Convinced I had seen more than that an have memories of seeing at least one CL81 at Daggenham.?

    Cheers Trailrage

Very interesting, thanks! It's been mentioned 81's made it through to Dagenham, still no photographic evidence as yet!
  18. Some years earlier than the time you mention, I remember seeing a piece in Modern Railways sometime in about 1980, about the conversion of the last stretch of 6.25kv to 25kv, in the Liverpool St area. There was a photo of an AC electric used for testing - it was either an 85 or an 86/3, can't remember which.

Interesting, would like to see that if anyone has the magazine in question? Chances are it was an 86, although saying that electric freight wasn't a thing on the GEML then, as the NLL wasn't wired at that time. 85's did make it to Glossop/Hadfield testing the OHLE when it was converted IIRC, and right at the end of their lives someone on WNXX positively ID'd one on the blocks at St Pancras, so they did start to spread their wings before their withdrawal. Would love to know if 81's did the same.

Further to this, there's this shot of an 81 on the Garston-Dagenham on the WCML, and the caption makes for interesting reading as it suggests the 81's worked all the way through. There's got to be photo evidence out there of them on the Great Eastern/LTS, surely?

  19. Just to bump this thread, I notice there are several shots of 85's at Stratford, and one at Woodgrange Park and Dagenham Dock on flickr in the 1989-1991 period on the Garston-Dagenham workings. AFAIK Roarers would've been extremely rare over Great Eastern metals as the NLL wasn't wired for freight until 1989. Does anyone know if they had any other booked work over the Great Eastern in their twilight years, and if 81's ever appeared? Would love to see a shot of an 85 at Maryland, Forest Gate or Barking if anyone has one to scan in!

  20. Like thebritfarmer I've been checking back on the 85's at Hattons for a while to see if they dropped price anymore., All of a sudden they went down to 6 in stock over the weekend, and then down to 3 on Tuesday morning, by the time I checked again in the afternoon, there was only 1 left! So after a few years of deliberating whether I should purchase one or not despite it being a completely different type of electric as all my rolling stock is DC, I swooped in for the last one. It's in the post, can't wait to receive it!  :senile:

  21. Further to the whole Kernow payments thing, I've been debited the full amount and 24 hours later the full amount is showing as deducted from my account. Is this correct? The way I understood the explanation on page 9 was that they would deduct the full amount and put it back in within 24 hours, so if this is correct I've had the amount deducted, but not reimbursed. Can anyone shed light on this? Sorry to bring it up again!
