  1. I’ve got a slightly random request if someone who has one of the new 37 models is willing to assist with please?

I’d like to know the measurement in millimetres from the buffers at one end to the edge of the last wheelset at the other end - reason being I want to get D6710 but not 100% sure if it’ll fit in the headshunt of my small BLT under construction, so would like to know whether the point blades will clear the last wheelset. I know it’ll be tight, hence the request for an accurate measurement with a tape measure if anyone can help.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. It’s an interesting choice given the competition, but Hornby will know their onions commercially and as it’s a glamour prototype is sure to make them a good profit. Whilst having glamour prototypes to tackle won’t last forever, it’s a good way to commercially consolidate for now and ensure Hornby’s survival on a steady footing over the longer term.

  3. What would make me get my bank card out:

    • An LNER J69

    • An LNER E4

    • Gresley Suburban Push-Pull coaches

    • Thompson BZ

    • Wickhams 109

    • Class 306

    • Class 313 (I’d pay a lot of money for a Silverlink set)

What I think we will actually get (not all at once of course):

    • A re-tooled 8F to the same standard as the new Black 5

    • A properly done 14xx, a massive open goal surely?!
    • A well advanced re-tooled 50
    • New 67’s in TfW black, GBRF and Diamond Jubilee purple

    • A 43102/43274 farewell pack and some EMR Mark 3’s, seems to be another open goal

    • 91 in the new LNER livery

    • Mark 4’s in new LNER livery

    • Generic bogie/clerestory coaches, I’d have a couple

    • TFW 231/756’s

    • The CAF 195-197 family of units.
    • A TFW 153
    • 153376 in NR blue

I had forgotten about that completely. Yeah it would be some risk for them to do that straight away. I'm still surprised no-ones picked up the RTC livery yet.

If you’re referring to 97204, that was picked up by Kernow at the same as D5579. Just checked, sold out, although I recall some still being available when I bought D5579.

Could well be matched with a Accurascale 31 in 4mm  I reckon!

Kernow commissioned one from Hornby not long ago, I bought one of the last available ones back in May 2020 - limited to 150 pieces IIRC. Can’t see there being a market for another one so soon. Now if Kernow wanted to commission another one, D5578 in that experimental blue which ran around with D5579 would make me get my debit card out instantly.

  6. Out of my era but I would buy a Greater Anglia 90, particularly if it was 90001 Crown Point with red buffer beams. 90009 in One Stratford-esque Diamond Jubilee livery with white roofs and Union Jacks would also get the credit card out.

Away from Anglia, I’d have thought a Scotrail Barbie liveried one would sell, and 036 in RFD with yellow roof and EWS beasties is also pretty unique.

What evidence do you have to support this assertion? Were you involved?

Given that Paul is an esteemed member of the GER society I’d suggest yes! I’m sure he’ll confirm either way though.

The way I look at it is could I make a better fist of this model than Oxford have done here? The answer is a resounding no - it looks fantastic and I didn’t even notice the brake lever until mentioned. It’ll do for me, it may even be the only RTR GER goods vehicles we get.

  8. Kent Garden Railways have a sale on, including a few older Hornby releases that are hard to find now (some in the R3000 series). A few that stood out to me:

    • A Hornby 52xx for £80.

    • Hornby 28xx and 2884’s for £100.

    • A Hornby Star for £100.
    • A blue Bachmann Warship for £100.
    • A Bachmann LBSCR Atlantic for £130.

Plenty of other gems I’m sure, link here: https://kgrmodels.com/product-category/january-sale/january-sale-oo/january-sale-oo-locos/

There’s OO rolling stock available in a separate section, as well as some O and some N here: https://kgrmodels.com/product-category/january-sale/

No affiliation, just a bargain hunter.

Ah! Rees' steak pies from Cowbridge Road, Canton.

I well remember an early morning visit to the premises on a day when Arsenal were in the F.A cup, 2005 maybe? Sure they played Man Utd.

    Equally appealing.

That said, Clarks do well with a portion of chips ( heavy on the vinegar) as Clarks innards, being of a finer mince adhere well to dipped chips............

You can then attack the pastry.......

Remember that day well, albeit I was behind a cushion on my sofa as it went to penalties after being battered for 120 minutes and I couldn’t bare to look. Cue bedlam when Patrick Vieira stepped up and put the deciding penalty away. Happy days!

  10. My local shop Great Eastern Models is a Tier 1 retailer, so might be worth giving them a bell for Drax wagons etc. No connection, just a customer passing on some information.

I received a newsletter from Derails earlier today and as has been said, allocations have been cut across the board now to just a handful of items per models, and other things like TPE and GWR 802’s are sold out already. Definitely a tactic to direct people to the Hornby website for sureness of supply IMO, and as a hard-nosed business tactic it will work, as it guarantees greater income at full RRP.

  11. As to the earlier question as whether these will be ESU or Zimo chips, in the 2022 control thread on the Hornby sub forum they’re bringing out their own 21-pin chip which presumably is what they’ll be using on these models. There’s an 8 to 21 pin adapter being released as well.

Underwhelmed. The big engine policy might make some sort of business sense, but it doesn't float my boat. I want 0-6-0s and 0-6-0Ts (and not 4fs reliveried in movie style or yet more A1Xs). But I shall save up for a Coronation set if it's any good, so maybe Hornby have got me trapped...

Given Hornby’s financial issues in the recent past, if releasing large desirable Pacific’s is maximising the money in the tills for them to build up a good pile of cash then that can only be a good thing. We had a few years of predominantly smaller locomotives being released, J50’s, J15’s, 700’s, Peckett’s, Sentinel’s etc, certain interests come in waves. Given that there are only three Pacific’s left to do, the question is what comes next after they’ve exhausted all options? The only glamorous locomotives I can think of that don’t have a model to the latest standards are a GWR Saint, and unrebuilt Patriot, and possibly an all-singing all-dancing Peppercorn A1. Given today’s announcement a retooled 8F must be a shoo-in. A Standard 3MT 77xxx and 2MT 84xxx are the only other obvious gaps I can think of. People mention an SR U or an N but if they were likely to sell well they’d have been done by a manufacturer by now.

If the Stadler FLIRT sells well there are the new CAF 195-197 DMU’s which between them will be fairly widespread. All of the recent new-build rolling stock is relatively specialist and geographically concentrated so hard to see what would sell well.

Unless Hornby and others can find ways of making smaller, less glamorous unproduced steam locomotives commercially viable at today’s prices, we might be getting to the point where we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel?

Interesting choice to make the Stadler units but I can't understand the logic behind producing these but not the much more widely available Electrostars or Class 700s, both of which would have far more of a market you'd have thought. Unless this is a test of the water to see how many people will buy DMUs and EMUs.

I guess with the Stadler’s they will be more geographically spread - Wales and the border counties, and across East Anglia and even London if/when the Lowestoft through services start, and as mentioned above they will run alongside lots of different rolling stock from different TOC’s in their respective operating areas. By contrast the Electrostars are all concentrated in London and the South-East without exception, and you would need to tool up 3 different models to cover 375’s/377’s, 379’s, and 387’s. The FLIRT also has the fact that it runs on diesel as it’s trump card - anyone wanting one for their layout doesn’t necessarily have to have OHLE, it can just be modelled in diesel mode.

I think that if somebody modelled ECML in Cambridgeshire then they'd be able to justify one. I think they go to Peterborough for example. One thing I had thought about alongside these, given Bachmann aren't very forthcoming with a Northern 158 was to have an alternative stock of further south (which 800s, 801s and 803s would still suit, along with most of my freight stock) which could involve an EMT 158 and a 755 or two. But that won't be happening soon due to the sheer amount of stuff I  have on order already (and want to order from this range).

Was going to say the same thing, the 755’s work Ipswich-Peterborough so they rub shoulders with Azuma’s, 91’s and even Lumo 803’s if someone wanted to model the ECML, and they regularly visit Hornsey for tyre-turning too. They also work alongside XC 170’s and EMR 156’s and 158’s from Peterborough-Stansted/Norwich.

Must admit I’m surprised that Hornby didn’t see the opportunity of putting out a Railroad ROG 37 for people to model the semi-regular FLIRT drags that happen in this part of the world!

  15. Continuing the theme of LNER oddballs, a V4 would go down well I would’ve thought. Only two, named, several different liveries including apple green, and a new-build project to commence in the near future.

With Rapido putting out an announcement on Thursday, I’m wondering what the two companies are going head to head on (if at all?). Must be a locomotive, I can’t imagine Rapido would be rivalling Hornby to that extent on their big day for a wagon or carriage.

  16. Seeing how much positive reaction the team at Accurascale got for the Siphon G, how about a Thompson BZ? Really lovely prototype and well-travelled and they lasted into the late 70’s too. Gives you an opportunity to show how to do 6-wheelers! I would definitely have one, and I’m sure others would have a lot more than one. Or a Gresley D120 Pigeon Van, another lovely prototype.
