I've just done a 68217. I used the smallest numbers on an HMRS Pressfix sheet - they just fit nicely and they are straw-coloured. Its easy to renumber if you pop the ends of the body out first. If you're modelling 68217 with the doors open you'll notice that the supplied single doors have a diagonal brace on the inside. 68217 didn't have the diagonal brace. The closed double door moulding is without the braces, so I used that and cut it carefully down the middle in order to model the doors open. 68217 also had an odd combined top lamp iron and bump-stops for the sliding windows. We don't have that detail in our tooling suite, hence we didn't include 68217 as one of the options, though in truth, it hardly notices and 68217 was much-used on the W&U. (CJL)

Thanks Chris. Just to check, which sheet - I'm assuming 14P, like this? https://www.petersspares.com/hmrs-14p-oo-gauge-br-steam-loco-coach-van-pressfix-transfer-sheet.ir

  2. I gave the customer service team a ring and chances are the B12 and Q6 chips were canned due to low pre-orders. The chap I spoke to did say they could be brought back into the range at a later date, but personally I have my doubts as there’s unlikely to be a massive additional take-up next time around.

I’ve already got a B12, and have slightly mixed views on the omission of the chip from the range. I was looking forward to being able to add sound to mine for a low price and give TTS a try, although as others have expressed on here, I did have reservations over sound synchronisation in particular. I do wonder why they went for the B12 as it seems to have been a slow seller - if they wanted to do a GER engine I would’ve gone for the J15 as that seems to have sold strongly.

All is not lost though as Coastal Sound do a B12 sound chip - I have the J15 one already and it’s superb quality. Just need to save the pennies now!

  3. Apologies if I’ve missed it elsewhere, but it appears Hornby have cancelled some of their forthcoming TTS sound chips. I’ve been keeping an eye out for the B12 chip, R7145, and I’ve just checked and Hattons and others are showing it as now cancelled from production - it was showing as due in May as recently as last week. The link to the product on the Hornby website no longer works either.  The Q6 chip also appears to have been cancelled.

Does anyone know why - I’m assuming low pre-orders? It’s disappointing, especially when the release date was close, but I can understand the decision if take-up hasn’t been great.

  4. Here are some cruel close-ups of my weathering efforts on 8223 from the first batch, posed on my unfinished layout:IMG_3204.jpg.7cc802585d861abfece699ee390501c1.jpg

It still needs lamps, crew, and one of the lamp irons straightening out - and also a bit of a brush to remove dust/fibres as its been sat on my modelling tray for a while!

Method was similar to Alex's, I used Humbrol Smoke powders on the body, and dark earth on the skirts and cowcatchers.

Looking forward to receiving my second one! I'm going to switch my pre-order to 68223 with BR lettering and renumber to 68217 as per this photo:

    68217 - Holden GER Class C53 LNER Class J70 0-6-0T - built 11/03 by Stratford Works as GER No.136 - 1924 to LNER No.7136, 05/46 to LNER No.8217, 09/49 to BR No.68217 - 03/53 withdrawn from 31B March - seen here at Wisbech East with a train for the Tramway, 08/50.

  5. I spoke to Oxford this morning on the phone briefly to ask about the sound versions. The sounds are currently being stitched together from recordings of the real thing, and they're expecting the files imminently - so they won't be generic sounds which I'm pleased about. The LNER versions (I'm assuming DC) are on the way and due very soon, with BR ones likely to follow in May or thereabouts.

Worth giving the TTS a try IMO.  you may be pleasantly surprised.

And if you don't like why not eBay it off - you'd probably get £25 - £30 if it's boxed and you haven't cut the speaker off..

That latter point has swayed it for me, as I won't be butchering the speaker. Looks like I'll be giving TTS a try then! Can always save up for the Coastal chip if it isn't to my liking.

  7. I'm tempted to dabble with TTS sound for the forthcoming B12 chip. Does anyone know whether this is likely to be generic, or recorded from the real thing?

I've watched some videos of TTS steam on Youtube, the revolutions/chuff relationship does look a bit strange, but the sound is decent quality and at £35 it is significantly cheaper. Alternatively, Coastal do a B12 - I already have their J15 sound, which is superb. I can't decide between the two options at the moment! I see that the S15 revolution/chuff is allegedly a lot better, has this improvement been carried forward in their more recent releases?

The Bachmann trainset controller is fine, its output is almost pure DC. I've never had any problems with it and coreless motors or DCC fitted locos.

Agree with that - my layout is DCC and operated with an NCE Powercab, but I run everything in on DC on my test track to check all is well before I chip a model, and I use a Bachmann Trainset controller for this. I didn’t come across any issues doing this with the J70.

  9. I received mine today. Safe to say it is a beauty, model of the year candidate for sure and definitely worth the wait. It was quite surreal opening the box of a RTR steam tram!

It’s simply a sublime model, it looks spot on, the finish is fantastic, and the level of detail is brilliant. I might have a stab at fitting the detailing parts and running it in tomorrow evening, time permitting - if so, I’ll take a few photos.

I’m a GE modeller, but its such a charming and unusual prototype that I can see these selling well and being snapped up by collectors and impulse buyers. Big thank you to MR/Rapido for their hard work and making a J70 a reality, and I’m looking forward to my second one coming when it is ready.

Also do we know the authenticity of the sound they are using? Is it recorded directly from 69621, cobbled together from random recordings of it or is it just made up like the Dean Goods sound?

I would hope that the N7 uses real recordings, although 69621 hasn't steamed since July 2014 - I guess it depends whether Oxford recorded it before it was withdrawn? In mitigation, the Dean Goods is stuffed and mounted so no surprise it doesn't use authentic recordings really. I notice Hattons are offering N7's with Olivia's sound, but again, not sure if this is generic or not.

As an aside when I popped into my local shop today (and apologies if this is old news), I was told they were expecting deliveries of the LNER and BR ones at the end of this month and end of March - they weren't sure which order they were coming in, though.

Sorry but I don't believe it either. I was a regular visitor to 30A from 1959 to 1963 and never saw a GW engine there. What use would a 97XX be in early 63 when the shed had closed to steam in September 1962? According to my locoshed books 9700 & 9701 were always allocated with the remainder of the class at 81A. Neither have I ever seen a reference in the RCTS Railway Observer of such an allocation.

Which are all very good reasons to doubt the veracity of the info. That period is (unfortunately) before my time so cannot vouch either way. I had a look at Shed Bash and there’s no mention of a Pannier - 9401 doesn’t appear to have been seen during the time it was allocated.

Clearly BRLocoDatabase has a source for the 57xx/97xx claims - I wonder what the source is?

The RCTS books quote that 78023 worked a special goods on the Chingford branch on 2/8/62.I do not believe that any 57xx were ever allocated to 30A, although I would love to be proved wrong. Roger

Didn’t know that, thanks! The 2MT’s always seemed a bit of an odd allocation, what with steam on the GE being in its death throes, the small number of 2MT’s allocated, and the fact that 15’s and 16’s were doing all the light passenger and freight work by this time. The only thing I can think of is that their allocation at Stratford was to hasten the withdrawal of the remaining elderly ex-GE machines.

And I’m pretty damn sure none of the 97xx variants were either. Where does this weird notion come from?

With respect, that comes across a little presumptive.

I’ll leave others to debate the validity of the source, but I have had no reason to doubt it - on the contrary, I find it very useful.

I understood 9401 was allocated to Stratford 1/57 to 8/57 for trials in Temple Mills Marshalling Yards, London and this is what I quote in my East Anglian 4mm Modelling document. But BRDatabase (where I quickly abstracted above) quotes "57XX class 9400 was allocated to Stratford 9/1962." I would be interested to know more.

    Paul

Ah you're the person that put that document together! It's both a blessing and a curse as you could use it to justify all kinds of weird and wonderful traction that you don't actually need...  :D

It appears its a typo - having just checked the same source, condensing Panniers 9700/01 were based at Stratford from 1950-1963/61 respectively. I assume they were based there for working over some LT lines - I doubt they would've worked onto the Central Line as that was a J15 job, so I suspect they were shedded there for Smithfields-Stratford/Temple Mills transfer freight (only my supposition). Why Stratford I don't know, as the others were based at either Old Oak Common or Southall. To be honest, I'm not sure there was any direct freight between Smithfields and Stratford, as I'd always understood freight from Smithfields went via the Circle Line to the Western, and there's no obvious route between the two. Getting a bit off topic now!

In September 1962 Stratford had an allocation of about 50 steam locos, including J15, V3, B1, 57xx, L1, J69, Class 4 2-6-4T, Class 2 2-6-0 as well as N7. All regular steam in East Anglia finished on 9 September 1962, except at March which closed 25 November 1963.

First time I've seen mention of Pannier's allocated to Stratford - not doubting you, just new to me! What were they used on? Only previous mention I've seen is of a 94xx that was trialled at Temple Mills. There's doubt as to whether those 2MT's actually did anything as they were there so briefly. I've only ever seen a shot of one light engine at Stratford Low Level.
