  1. The men were very proud of their steeds and looked after them in those days, my grandad told me that Guards had their own vans and used to clean and varnish them, also having bits of carpet in the doorways, they also could get "stained glass" transfers that they applied to the windows.....
  2. Were the cab and tender roofs green or black ? I have seen both on models......
  3. I have been told by several men that were there that a S160 was studied in detail before the B1 design was finalised, particularly the cylinders and porting arrangements......

  6. My Grandad told me about an outside framed goods engine working an excursion once and the cranks knocked off a lot of the coping stones on the platform, I thik it was on the Seamer line. The track had been relaid and no outside cranked locos had been there for a while.....
  7. My Dad a loco fitter told me the longest passenger he ever saw was 32 coaches worked by a V2 during the war. It was 2 troop specials coupled together after one loco failed. The driver was Harry Gutteridge, he worked the train forward until another loco could be found, not at a great speed however. This was at Darlington working northbound, Harry patted the loco on the cabside whilst saying "come on girl you can do it. I wish we had properly recorded his memories.....
