  1. Having pondered a while and read throught the various pros and cons I am going to go for the Hornby model, just need to find out what numbers visited the Banbury area so that I can do a renumber. I am not au fait enough with the B1 to know if I buy one and renumber it that I will be renumbering the correct variant, but I can live with that.

7013--if this helps--some detective work for you. According to my Locospotters Log Book,on 19/4/1959--a Sunday,I'copped' 61008 at Swindon station at the head of what I think was a train bound for York (possibly originating from Swansea) via ex-G.C. metals--i.e. Oxford-Banbury-Leicester etc. It was,I think, a regular weekend working at the time. So--take it from there. Good luck--Ian.

  2. Does that mean it was pre-filleted...?

    Dave.

Late replacement loco for failed K3 on Grimsby fish turn. Commandeered while running-in from Doncaster works.

  3. Push-Pull mode ???

Or do you mean hidden out of sight ??

I have D5711 and D5714 in original green - no yellow.

Another b------ senior moment!!!.OOOOOPS. What with that & giving Xmas cards I haven't signed--time for the funny farm.

  4. Rewiring is straightforward, the black and red were the opposite way round (from the pics on the Hattons printout) on the two models i did for a friend at the club, swapped over as described and problem sorted. I'll post a couple of pics tomorrow as I've weathered them now. I'm not a fan of the early green diesels (especially oddballs!) but i must admit they do look the part. Almost tempted. .

Definitely---from a point of local historical significance alone. 17A based in late 50's,early 60's.The second main line diesels to work the Midland main line--regularly on St. Pancras--Manchester trains via the now disappeared Peak line--the first being 10000 & 10001.They worked in pairs, using ,as I recall, the interconnecting doors. There was some alteration to the cab windows after that---& the Hattons model is post whenever that was. A pair would look great behind a rake of maroon Mark 1's--no yellow apron ,though. A case made for temptation ?

  5. I thought that might happen. I'll have to have a good look at the Bachmann B1 to make a final decision, but if it turns out cheaper and runs well, I can live with its shortcomings aesthetically. Thanks for the heads up.

Wy not one or two of each?

  6. I repent.Say after myself one hundred times-'It is the font,it is the font........' A baby deltic--but not as I remember it--sans headcode box----one day at Kings X in Sept.'59 when I 'copped' seven in a day,in company with many D 53XX ( later Class26) one solitary D61XX ( soon to be aScottish fiasco) , the prototype 'Deltic' and several D 2XX (later Class 40) This,in common with a generous helping of Gresley & Peppercorn Pacifics and a solitary A2. The type2 diesels had charge of ECS workings, the Cambridge Buffet Expresses and Outer Suburban & Moorgate line commuter services--complete with Gresley non-corridor stock. Yes--I'll buy----out of pure nostalgia alone.!!

Now arrived.I am no longer bothered by fonts. Subjectively, the best Heljan to date. A class (23?) act.

  7. A 'weathered' example has just appeared on e-bay--incredible! I'm afraid this, for £100,is a rather poor offering . In common parlance,it needs a nose job.

  8. Comparing the photos of the Heljan model and the real thing, it really does look like the headcode box is quite a bit shallower than it should be, but also the nose appears to have slightly more radiussed corners. However, to me it looks like it's the headcode box which is causing the model to look slightly off.

I wonder if a non-headcode version will look better?

  9. Just taken delivery of new Bachmann Class 70 70006 which seems to be in short supply at the moment. Ordered via website last Tuesday evening and delivered by courier this a.m. Cost, inclusive of delivery £82.50.Competitive ,I think? Good service !

  10. Thankyou to 071 and 10000 for your kind advice.

Seems relatively simple but I will wait until the morning to execute.

You'll have to excuse me if I'm on a bit of a learning curve with 'kettles'.

With WHAT ? Kettles make tea or fill hot water bottles.I beg of you not to demean or patronise over 150 years of great BRITISH engineering heritage with a fashionable put-down!

  11. Ian, if you read my thread I have said that Bronzino is to be done using Bachelors Button as the donor loco. This loco as we all know is a single chimney model & all that is needed is the fitting of a double chimney. If you look at my post on page 11 No 274 & 12 no 277 which I did on 22nd Nov you will see Bronzino done for a customer from a Bachelors Button which you will see has got no Multiple Valve Regulator. There are also one or two other mods I have carried out too which you can see from the pic. With thirty plus years of detailing loco's I'm always careful when doing new loco's. Fortunatly I have a vast collection of reference books & my own photo's I took back in the early 1960's I can fall back on when doing a paticular loco. Of course I do trip myself up every now & then!!!!

    Cheers

Touche--only trying to be helpful ! I look forward to making your acquaintance at Doncaster. Ian.

  12. Just recieved my first BP & its already been converted to Suger Palm ! I'm taking it down to the Railway Club tonight to give it a run on the club layout. I have fitted a Lenz new standard decoder which are very good but will probably have to do a bit of fine tuning to get it running perfect. I will post pictures when I get it all finished. Jobs to do : paint top of tender BR Green, remove lining from cylinders, fit add-ons & most strange fit works plates under cab numbers. For some reason Bachmann have not fitted them. Other loco's I am doing are 60533 'Happy Knight' 36A Doncaster, 60538 'Velocity' 52B Heaton & 60539 'Bronzino' 52B Heaton (using Bachelors Button) All these loco's along with lots of other East Coast Pacifics can be seen on my layout 'Haymarket Cross' at the Doncaster Model Railway show 13/14th Feb 2011 so come along & have a chat with us.

    cheers

For your info: I hope this will help:60539 was actually built with a double chimney. 526(50A's pet),529 533 & 538 were given a double blast pipe & multiple valve regulator at a later date. My source for this is locos in service as at March 26 1955 (Ian Allen abc) and in the case of Bronzino a personal observation -photographed-on a northbound express at York on 10th Sept. 1960.So think carefully about a donor loco for 539.

  13. Well now. Please take it from one who was there- i.e.who saw York's 60526 & Heaton's 60539-and others. This is as close as you can get. Don't carp or nit-pick. Celebrate! Not quite right ? The age of rivet-counting is obviously alive&well.

  14. Bachmann Collectors Club have an as preserved Blue Peter for sale---now,it seems--at £125.65+£4.75 delivery. Some wag already has it on e-bay-at £249.95 or best offer. I have taken the liberty of forwarding the listing to Barwell.

  15. I can say from personal observation that soon after they appeared they were to be seen regularly on Midland expresses at Derby. Always in pairs as I recall, and I believe it would have been summer of 1959 rather than 1958. One particular day sticks in my mind when I think about half the class was seen between about 1030 and 1700!

Worked in tandem on St.Pancras-Manchester Central turns 1959&1960.If I recollect, with interconnecting doors coupled.Surfaced 1963-64 working Furness Line turns.
