  1. Andrew, you can't possibly have followed the Grantham thread and not seen Mr. King's splendid array of Cocks? He has so many they have their own area (the Cock Holding Area) in the loco storage arrangememts.

I have no doubt they'll be on display at the weekend, although I'm bringing mine too in the hope I'm allowed to get it out at some point.

    Fnarr.

Does he have one called Bantam?

  2. Please may I ask a question regarding the model?

There has been a considerable number of posts recently regarding the use of coreless motors in new models, one poster reporting damage to the new Bachmann Baldwins through use of a feedback controller.  Please, in advance of delivery of my order for the DC version of this model, what type of motor is fitted and what, if any, recommendations do Rapido/Locomotion have regarding appropriate power supplies/controller?

  3. With all this prolonged hot sunshine, what's the verdict so far on Clouded Yellow, Red Admiral, and Painted Lady numbers ? Everyone's comparing things to 76 and then i saw swarms of each but my sightings have been average numbers so far.

Occasional only. Virtually no butterflies in early June, now plenty of assorted whites, speckled wood, gatekeeper, blues, resident comma and friends and brimstone. Tortoiseshells also a rarity. Hopefully do better in Devon shortly.

Has anyone else noticed a lack of interest in Buddleia this year? Is the dry weather reducing the amount of available nectar?

  4. My Dad did this with a number of our locos. My apple green 0-4-0 had an Eclipse bar magnet replacing the field coil, as did Pychley. I think the SR motor coach had a horseshoe magnet for some reason. Still got them somewhere, now I guess some bright spark will suggest I convert them to DCC!

  5. For those of us seeking to increase our knowledge on a fairly specialised subject without researching primary sources, vol 1 seemed ideal. Has there been any update/comment by the authors/publishes in the light of the reported deficiencies?

  6. During this sunny hot spell, we have got into the habit of sitting in the garden with a tray of tea and an ice cream about 4.30 - 5pm. We have a regular companion, a comma which perches in a pear tree close to us but has also perched on a seat back and yesterday on the book my wife was reading!

We have noticed that whenever another butterfly (mostly assorted whites) passes, he takes off to investigate. Usually it is a cursory inspection but on occasions he has discovered another of his species, which led to what can only be described as a spat - presumably the stranger was of similar gender. He has no problem with sharing his tree with other species as an emerald green damselfly was perching within 15" of him yesterday.

We are surprised at the distance he can detect another butterfly - certainly in excess of 30'. Could a more knowledgeable enthusiast advise if this is purely visual or are other senses involved? And are his forays motivated sexually or territorially?

  7. Well, Mercedes are designed for transporting rotund sausage/lager consumers, so should be comfortable for an undernourished English builder.

I don't think you could class Mr Bacon as undernourished - cannibalism can be fattening!

  8. It would be interesting to know what was specified in terms of electrical supply, compatibility and performance for this and other new models.

The Rapido team seem to be sound production engineers and ingenious designers. Had the need for compatibility with ALL currently produced control systems been specified - and possibly sample systems provided - it is possible that they would have derived a different engineering solution, possibly reducing the (unrealistic?) load hauling capacity in the interests of satisfying a wider market.

As a matter on interest, has anybody actually tested this model on a feedback controller?

  9. Never easy. We have had to have two cats put to sleep (the first aged 22) and two dogs over a period of 35 years.

Take the vet's advice but if possible, let the dog tell you. Our Airedale is beginning to show signs of dementia and will stop in the middle of a walk and stare around her; she sometimes lies in the house barking to herself for no apparent reason. But she still wags her tail when she greets us, enjoys her food and walks and sits up in the car to watch the world go by. Her predecessor had skin cancer and we prolonged her life for about 8 months with various treatments but there came an afternoon walk when she just looked at me to tell me she had had enough.

When the time comes for your dog it will "leave its pawprints on your heart" but you may after a while find another. It will be a different animal and personality but it may come to mean just as much to you, without dimming your memories and affection for its predecessor.

  10. I originally wanted the preserved example as running in the 1980s because I saw it in steam. Then they cancelled that version and I lost interest.

Then I thought sod it, I may as well get one as if I did want one in future then I could be paying stupid prices for one. There aren't any decent kits available as far as I know, so it was either get one or miss out. FOMO as they now call it, Fear Of Missing Out.

So yes, I think it's now or never. Or at least quite a while before it's repeated.

    I have a Millholme Models kit sitting on a shelf...…… and a D & S dynamometer car....

  11. My old class 5 was the most powerful locomotive I have come across. In my teenage years I coupled it to a train with a Dublo Duchess on the other end and it literally pulled train and Duchess backwards. I remember acquiring it by a trade-in of the old bakelite track with Hattons in the late 50s/early 60s.

Incidentally, can't the class 5 and Brit be converted between 2 and 3 rail by simply changing the collection shoes?

  12. Hmmm.  RMWeb, quite mild compared to some of the extended daily rants by a few individuals on the G0G Forum, sadly. It seems that, for them, there are only two sorts of people in the world: those who agree with them and those who are just plain wrong!   David

    Love the nom-de-plume.

Second grandson is now a week overdue. Sadly, my suggested naming of Isambard Kingdom Brunel 2750papyrus has not been well received.

  13. I also attended "Trains at Trinity" in Biggy yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it , though it was small.  In addition to my enjoyment of the M&GN loco, I was very taken with the Carette GN 440s on a static display, a model which I have not seen before.

I had concluded from your choice of name and references to Bedford that we must be near neighbours!

  14. The plan is to do a further video of LB at some point in the summer. That'll be in its current period.

A few more things need completing; for instance, point rodding (when I can get around to it) and the M&GNR signals (which Tony Gee is working on at the moment). There are also several new locos and items of rolling stock which are currently being painted, which will feature.

In August, it's also planned to do an LNER-period DVD, where the Grantham chaps are going to bring along their trains. Graham Nicholas is even building two somersault signals, because, in 1938, they were still extant. They'll just 'plug-in' in place (temporarily) of the existing ones.

Though I'll be part of the filming process (and will introduce the DVDs), I don't have the faintest idea how to import and process the footage. Tom Foster and Jesse Sim will see to that. Thanks in anticipation, chaps. When complete, the programmes will be posted on here and on Youtube. They'll not be made for commercial gain.

When I was fortunate enough to visit LB (concerning either the J6 or V4), I asked if you had considered backdating it to LNER days.  You felt this was impractical due to the sheer volume of locomotives and rolling stock which would be required.  I am therefore delighted to hear that the Grantham team will be "importing" their stock to LB and look forward to this combination of two of the foremost ECML lines.  Should be a great video!

There should be a number of dynamometer cars available by then - will Mallard's run be recreated?
