  1. For the cab steps why do you not just use a plasticine mould made by pressing in the Jinty step and filling it in with resin. Paul the Restorer on his Youtube channel has done this several times to make missing parts for his models.
  2. Do the Americans still use H0 3 rail track. If they do you should be able to use one of their crossings.
  3. How about nicking one from an old Hornby patriot. There is one on Ebay for £5.99 with a buy it now sale.
  4. Hi all, As I have mentioned in an earlier thread I have taken a break from restoring and repairing loco's. Moved on to buying a lot of scrapped wagons and fixing them. I never thought I would get such a feeling of satisfaction with them as I did with the locos. But some of them Just lifted my soul when I finished them. I have fixed up about 40 wagons now. Here are the ones that have given me the greatest satisfaction and why. The first picture is the lot that most of them came in. The circled wagons are the ones I am showing. 1/ This is what looks like a very tall mineral wagon on the left hand side of the picture. Had to scratch build the roof and the end arches of the walls. Also had to repair the damaged chassis. 2/ This was the old Hornby box van with sliding doors at the top of the picture. I had to source a new chassis as for some reason this was on and old Triang chassis. I scratch built new doors for both sides. I think they turned out nicely. 3/ All there was of this wagon was the body with broken side rails. I sorted out a chassis and repaired the under gear on that and repaired the side rails. 4/ Again all there was of this was the body. It originally had a short wheel based chassis. But I wanted it on a slightly longer chassis. Sorted out another damaged chassis from my increasing stock pile. Made running boards and front/rear footplates. I had heard of a shorter wheel chassed brake van similar to the Hornby one and thought why not try and make one. Nothing to loose. 5/ The four wheeled coach was a different matter. The body had been repainted and very nicely painted in green with gold lining. The only problems with it were the chassis was smashed and unrepairable. All the detailing on the ends had been file completely off back to just flat plastic. So I took another 4 wheeled coach I have and used that as a template to rebuild all the detailing. So all the hand rails and steps are now separate and not just moulded on to the body. All the wagons got a full repaints. I just painted the ends of the coach and its new chassis. All the chassis were missing at least one buffer. So they were also repaired. I know that these may not be the most earth shattering repairs and mods. But they have given me immense satisfaction in doing them. After all that is what this hobby is about.
  5. Is that Wesley Pegden with the glasses taking a look at your engine. Be worried if he says it's running a bit rough...........😁
  6. Hi all, If soldering is not your thing. And I admit it is not mine a decent glue is the best way to go. This is the best superglue I have found. It sticks everything to any thing so far for me. including that horrible greasy plastic that you some times get. But I have never tried it on wood so cannot say about brass to wood. https://www.hafixs.co.uk/products/profglue/index.html
  7. Hi, I use Hafix industrial superglue. Not found anything it doesn't stick together yet. https://www.hafixs.co.uk/products/profglue/index.html
  8. Hi Captain. You are going to have an absolutely incredible layout when it is finished.
  9. High Captain, You could get it to work with longer platforms. But you would need to simplify the trackwork. Get rid of the kickback siding and all the associated double slips and crossovers. That would allow you to lengthen the outer platform following the track. Where the lower 2 lines run now the complicated pointwork has gone after the double slip/crossover it looks like you are using a lefthand point. Swing that piece of track out and use a righthand to swing it back into line a little further out. Or just get rid of it all together and use a single line into the platform. I would put a run round between the top 2 lines as well. Complicated trackwork is sometimes not practical. I decided to see if I could come up with a similar platform area track plan that would allow you to do what you wanted that would fit into your space. Looking at the grid spaces and assuming that they are in feet, You have about 11.5ft in length to play with. Which is about 3.5m. The plan I have drawn up in Anyrail which basically does the same with longer platforms. Please note that the crossovers are really single or double slips depending on how you want them to operate( I could not find the slips icons to use them). The length of this plan is 3 metres long(9ft 10ins). Well with in your 3.5 metres(11.5ft) length. I hope that this may be of some inspiration to you. Then I tried to make it a bit more compact and more like a 4 road terminus. So came up with a slightly altered track plan.
  10. Hi all, I would have thought that if any signalling was done it would be ground signals attached to manually activated ground frame points. Not sure how this would affect the need for the overhead signal box you have.
  11. Hi all, I have just picked up a Hornby engine shed and goods shed. I do not want to use the sticky backed wall sheets that come with them. I want to play with them and alter them. So i have downloaded a new set of roof and wall textures.I was wondering what is the best glue to stick brick and roof paper to the plastic walls. Also what would be the best grade of paper to print on for this.
  12. Hi, I cannot help but think that the old Triang/Hornby M7 body might have been an easier starting point for this engine. But what you have done is looking good so far.....👍
  13. Hi, Just before Covid I paid £100.00 for what was being sold as 'A box of railway stuff' from a local 2nd hand shop. I decided to take a punt and buy it. It had over £300 worth of track and points in it, A Hornby turntable All new, boxed and unopened Plus some other bits and pieces. Think there was about £500.00 of stuff in it.
  14. Hi, The best ready to run turntable I have found is the Fleischmann one. For both reliability and ease of use. I believe Hattons have them in stock.
  15. Hi, You could possibly try a version of Minehead station. As your layout is set for modern traction you could remove the turntable. http://www.wsr.org.uk/map1003.htm
  16. Hi all, This is one of my 2 rather old modified Jinty's. Think I did them in the mid 1970s. I still have them both...... 😄
  17. Hi Bernard, Thanks for the info. I just put them on because I thought they looked good on the steel mineral wagons. I wondered what their reason for being on the wagons was for. Everyday is a learning day. I shall attend to their removal from the offending wagons.
  18. Then go for it. They do not seem to be very expensive. I have had mine since it first came out in the very early 80s. You might be interested in this article. https://www.scribd.com/article/640577538/Upgrading-An-Old-Station-Kit It will make a very nice Victorian era built station building for big towns and cities. When it was on my layout it was the main building for a 6 platform terminus.
  19. Hi all, You start on your rolling stock. I have been busy over the past few weeks digging from my spares and repairs boxes plus buying some rolling stock in the same condition as my own stuff to have a play with. Ebay purchases like the first picture. This picture is of the first lot I bought. Not bad a bad haul for £17.00. There were other bits and pieces added to make up more wagons as well. All the wagons here were damaged in some way or another. Had parts missing and were general buggered. So doing up the wagons to make the more usable gave me something to pass the time.....😉😇
  20. Hi Listerboy, I do not know really how rare they are. I have one in a box that used to be on my old loft layout. But as a Hornby product I doubt that they are very common. But as an investment it is not that good a buy. This one boxed with 2 other kits went for only £20.00. https://www.lskauctioncentre.co.uk/auction/lot/806-a-Hornby-r193-village-shop-kit-r194-petrol/?lot=348167&sd=1
  21. Hi B15nac, Dapol will sell you the transfers for the Booth Ridly crane. I have bought quite a few sets of transfers for various wagons and engines. They charged £1.75 per set plus p+p earlier this year when I bought some mineral wagon transfers from them Here are their contact details. https://www.Dapol.co.uk/pages/contact
  22. Hi Saxon, Try using the free version of Anyrail 6 and see if the same thing happens in that. But if it is a small gap as has been mentioned here it probably will not be a problem.
  23. Hi Mumbles, You cannot get talc or baby powder in the UK any more. Atleast not officially. There is a very good reason why it has been taken off the market. You will need to register on this site to read the whole article. https://www.insurancetimes.co.uk/news/johnson-and-johnson-to-end-all-uk-baby-powder-sales-as-ovarian-cancer-claims-escalate/1442043.article#:~:text=Motor-,Johnson and Johnson to end all UK Baby,as ovarian cancer claims escalate&text=Insurers could be bracing for, sales of the product globally.
