At least you din't use "rooves"!
Black doesn't seem appropriate, better with various shades of grey. Same for goods vans. I think you can get tins/jars of "roof grey" but that is maybe for new or overhauled stock.
Maybe best looking at colour albums or on Flickr. Some examples I have saved on the latter (coincidental that some are Port Road!):
Newton Stewart
Crossmichael (there is also a shot of this train approaching, if anyone interested in the self weighing tender!)
Kirkcudbright branch
A few more goods orientated ones:
Kyle of Lochalsh
Elliot junction.
Hope this helps gets you started down this particular rabbit hole!
The cattle trucks and parcels traffic pictures here are very interesting. It looks a lot like some of the train formations I’ve composed...

Great pictures
Yes NATO black is a mix between dark grey and black- quite a faded colour. It looks spot on for most of the coaches
Interesting the variety of freight roofs.

Coach “lids”? Do you mean roofs?
Yes, but I couldn’t work the plural out so I used lids!

Good point; I thought about a ladder down from the top, and if there hadn't been clearance at ground level that's what I would have done. But I don't think they'd want a ladder which would allow all & sundry public miscreants to find their way onto the signals (could be a locked gate at the top I suppose). Also from below would probably be more convenient for staff access given that they'd be approaching it from the railway. It does look quite a scary ladder, but when you see what lampmen had to climb on some semaphore gantries they'd probably think that one was a piece of cake!
Yes I think working practices were very dangerous in many ways then!
Your layout looks great!

The last couple of weeks I've been making some more signals. I had intended to have a nice gantry of semaphores in this location, but apart from their being no clearance for any kind of linkages, the signal is right above the side member of the baseboard so there would have been no way of getting any kind of mechanism underneath it.
So I've knocked up this gantry of colour lights instead, which I hope look like LNER or BR(E) searchlight type. As the signals are mostly seen from the side or behind, I didn't intend them to work.
The gantry is from Code 100 FB and etch scrap, apart from the diagonals which are 1mm x 1mm brass angle.
The signal heads are made up from various brass sections and hoods from Wizard Models.
Now with handrails, and a scary looking ladder:
Propped up in position, to check clearances, which are indeed minimal:
And now weathered and installed.
Looks really good. Did they ever had ladders down from the top of the wall or did they always go up?

Nato Black - an interesting thought. Does it come as a water colour that in the future could be washed off?
I see further down that the new Year is going to be busy
Very!
No it’s pretty permanent I used either Vallejo tyre black or Tamiya nato Black.
It does seem from pictures that BR coach lids were quite drab!

Nice. Your first 'unknown Lima CCT' is an LMS 42' parcels and luggage van, could be coded CCT or GUV depending on who was painting it. Your 'ex LMS CCT?' Is a SR parcels and miscellaneous van, PMV.
The 12t vans in parcels trains were a side effect of the LMR habitually diagramming more vehicles that it actually had available, and relying on vans and other vehicles 'borrowed' from other regions.
Thank you
There is a picture of the PMV in a book coupled up to some coaches and a BG I think.
The Dapol PMV is not bad but it needed the weight removing otherwise it became a dead weight on the coaching stock.
I’ve now completed my freight/parcels and coaching stock so the next big project will be to build the Class 126 kit!
Then next year I’ll need to build three more unpowered Class 126’s so I can run a six car set.
I’ve finished the 1964 timetable so I can run trains from Friday AM to Sat Night!!!
Working signals and yard lights next year.

Good Morning Dan
There are three ages of Bachmann Thompsons: Early, quite early and the later super detail. They all have different ride heights. This Post I wrote earlier might help:
For those of us with the luxury of large radius curves Bachmann Mk1s can be close coupled using Hornby R8220 (preferred) or Bachmann short cranked couplings, in both cases doing away with the need for additional corridor connectors. Again there is an old Post:
Cheers Ray
I’be used the Bachmann hose type coach connectors and the card corridor connectors- they work well. Do you think I should paint all my coach lids nato black? I prefer the look but Bachmann Mk.1 coaches are very well made so I’m reluctant to spoil them...

There is quite a difference in the Hornby coaches- they seem very underscale when next to the Bachmann mk.1’s. The Bachmann Thompson ck is also higher than the other Bachmann Thompson’s...

A summer Saturday morning in 1963.
6P Jubilee 45738 of 12A Carlisle Kingmoor on the Friday night 23:45pm from Newcastle to Stranraer via Carlisle arrives at 04:09 am. Nine minutes behind schedule...
BR 6MT 72008 of 12A Carlisle Kingmoor on the Down N.Irishman at 05:28am...
I’m gradually adding corridor gangway connectors to my coaching rakes!

I am not knowing - but might there be two rakes which changed over at the weekend to allow one to be cleaned and serviced?
You are correct, all sorts of adaptors to fit ex LNER coaches to Mk1s. I do believe there were similar issues when the MetroCammel Pullmans were introduced and had to be topped and tailed with older Pullmans or Gresley BGs.
Cheers Ray
Hello, yes I think so. I’m using rake 1 for the 04:00 arrival. This then gets run back to the carriage sidings at Stranraer Town from where it gets cleaned. This is used for the 13:40-Newcastle.
Rake 2 then arrives at 14:06. That becomes the stock for the 21:30 after cleaning and servicing.

Well it’s abit strange. Table 8 in the 1964 timetable has E, Z and W.
E- everyday except Sat
Z- also runs on Sat until 4th July inclusive
W- Saturdays only commences 11th July. TC to Newcastle arr 18:37 (Larne Stranraer Boat Train)
I was therefore going to save the eastern region rake for the Saturday service?
This would allow me to return the stock that arrived at 04:00 hrs from the 23:45 (Friday) from Newcastle on Saturdays.
The Saturday 09:32am from Newcastle which passed Dumfries at 12:01 and arrived at Stranraer at 14:06 would then become the stock for the 21:30 Larne-Stranraer Boat Train which arrived at Newcastle at 02:28 am on Sundays.
I have read that ex-LMS stock needed an adapter to LNER/BR stock so my rake is:
ER Set 1
BR MK.1 BCK
BR MK.1 TSO x 2
BR MK.1 BSK
Gresley 61ft Third
Gresley BTK
ER Set 2
Thompson 63ft BTK or BCK (can’t remember which)
Thompson CK 59ft?
Thompson 63ft TK?
BR MK.1 TSO
BR MK.1 CK
BR MK.1 BSK
Yes an ex LMS/BR engine to Carlisle.
In in my case I’d be using a 6P Jubilee or 5MT

Corkerhill’s 44957 prepares to take the 13:40 to Dumfries. It can’t be a Saturday as the service would run to Newcastle arriving at 18:37.
This is my ex LMS Port Road 4 Coach Set + XP Van.
The Class 126 (to be built- Silver Fox Kit has arrived) would have preceded this at 13:30 but would have diverged at Challoch Junction to Glasgow St Enoch

It has a nice full colour map at the back and also features:
Daylight Service To and From Ireland!
TSS Caledonian Princess
14:30 departure from Stranraer
16:45 arrival at Larne
Connects to the Class 126 services to Glasgow. From St Enoch passengers can connect via the other Glasgow termi to Aberdeen, Perth Dundee and Stirling.
The other daylight sailing departed Larne at 11:00
Arrival at Stranraer 13:15
This was a Monday-Saturday summer service!

That’s a very good idea... I don’t think it’s as noticeable in ‘real life’ but now you’ve mentioned it they certainly don’t look right!Making working signals, kit bashed from ratio parts with etched angled cranks, was the most difficult and fiddly thing I have done on the layout. I will improve on these efforts greatly on future layouts.
I’m concerned about dislodging any of the moving parts. So much so that apart from painting the brass base tube, I’m hesitant to do anything to them! Adding hand rails to the platforms was difficult enough without causing any issues, and I realise how bad a job I did of that in the photos! I think I may have to live with them as-is I’m afraid.
A few shots from mid afternoon ‘59 below.
Cheers,
Pete

Hi Richard,Thanks again. It’s natural sunlight. I’m working from home every other week (from the bench in the layout room) and have seen some lovely shadows cast late morning.
I’d like to take some better images but only have my mobile phone camera. I might try to borrow my Dads DSLR at some point / when we can meet up again!
An N2 has just been released and is about to head to the MPD:Regards,
Pete

Sometimes a guest driver helps (same household bubble)...
My daughter has been in charge of the trains tonight and has chosen the ‘guest’ DPU and the Newcastle Boat Train.
A new book arrived and I’m slowly digesting it.
I’ve realised that I have got services mixed up.
23:45 Newcastle arriving at Stranraer Harbour 04:00. This would then provide the ECS for the 12:20 (lately 13:40) to Newcastle.
The N.Irishman would then arrive after this at 05:23...

Its on the 15:50 from Stranraer Town but it’s starting from the Station today slight adjustment to the schedule...
You inspired me with your mainline 2P blog
Hopefully I’ve managed to recreate a prototype formation anyway!
