  1. I think you'l find that the searaiser 4 is just to the north of the warren end of the shipping containers

     

    and thus out of shot of the NWR web cam

     

    I don't know about the timing of the updates but

     

    I have seen frames with different vehicles in all this last week

    yes I think you are right, the angle of the camera is such that it cant see the work

     

    I'm going to watch the camera more carefully to see how often it updates...

    Re linked article: until the cost of strengthening the existing route is known, we don't know if £750M is a good price or not.  Whether it's 0.75, 1 or 2 billion I suspect the money will be found, because the political consequences of cutting off the south west from the rail network are unthinkable.

     

    And if the route is moved what happens to those houses currently protected by the railway embankment?

     

    What would be the impact on Dawlish & Dawlish Warren (or Teignmouth) if they no longer had stopping trains in the summer, e.g. The Dawlish Air Show?

     

    And if the new line went inland from Teignmouth to say Starcross (with tunnels) would Dawlish get a new inland station?

     

    If it was my problem I would get a commitment for funding (whatever option is preferred), before the General Election, perhaps during the "kissing babies" pre-election visits :)

  3. Found some interesting stuff here, re geology of the area round Dawlish and the sea wall:

    Also showing that there was a siding on the path removed 1941. Confirms that the warren is formed by long shore drift, and the greyness and breakwaters stop sand from going from the bay to the warren. Certainly, when I was a lad, the beach was much higher, though it varied over time.

     

    I had a hazy recollection that the groynes between Dawlish town station and the Langstone rock,many of which were timber supported on bullhead rail uprights in the 70s, we're not replaced in the late 70s/80s owing to concern about the sand spit at the warren eroding.

     

    May be of interest? Also noticed Rivercider's avatar, (an image which makes me misty eyed with nostalgia since watching the trains there is pretty much what I did maybe 2 years later Rivercider), clearly shoes the footpath that provided a link between the sea wall siding and the footpath at the Langstone Rock when the siding was in place.

    Is there not a local railway history expert who knows the dates sidings were put in & removed, and thus this siding(s) at Dawlish Warren?

     

    Here in the East Midlands there are chaps who can tell you the dates for every siding, signal box, you name it :)

  4. Noticed last night on the beach webcam about 7pm the orange army packing up for the night they dragged a machine on to the high level seawall path and left it there. It has disappeared today presumably they are working at low level today as well. Anyone know what it could be?

    I believe this is a portable drilling rig, as mentioned in several posts :)

  5. I had assumed the track was realigned closed to the mainland many years ago, hence the gap.  The siding is a better explanation.

     

    Is the Red Rock cafe open yet?

     

    Have noticed several people walking along "closed" section of sea wall over last few days

     

    What are the 3 guys who work there doing, given the gap is now to be completely closed in?

  6. Back from my annual Whitsun visit to Dawlish with the following observation - don't bother to make a special trip in the hope of seeing the repair as there is little you can see - security is too tight.

     

    As reported earlier in this thread, at Dawlish Warren you still cannot get past the footbridge west towards Red Rock Cafe, or walk through the contractors compound in the car park between the Langston Cliff Hotel and the line.  At Dawlish you can only walk a short distance east towards the containers (or onto that part of the beach).  You can also see the containers from the footbridge at Dawlish station.

     

    In the lobby at the hotel is a large (12 foot wide maybe) high quality colour digital print, presumably taken from an aircraft, approx half way through the repair with the spider in use.  An article alongside reports an estimated reopening date for the sea front path of September.

     

    From what I saw, many punters were disappointed that the path is still closed - but they have to accept it's a big job.  Security is definitely needed.

     

    What you can see briefly from the train is a lot of damage to the footpath awaiting repair, and if you look carefully the Dawlish beach webcam and the huge NR camera.
