I would like to extend my thanks to everyone involved in staging this event. This was the first exhibition I’ve been to in the UK for many years and it was only due to a last minute change of plans that I was able to attend at all. The venue is, of course, superb and even on the Saturday morning I found it busy, but not too crowded. I was very impressed with the whole thing and it was very useful to be able to speak directly with several manufacturers (Accurascale, Revolution Trains, Bachmann and The N Gauge Society). It was also good to find some small enterprises who had, until now, slipped under my radar and I was able to pick up some useful bits and pieces. I thought the layout variety was good with my favourite being City Basin Goods; high quality modelling with trains being operated at realistic speeds and faultless operation (at least when I was watching). I was hoping to be able to personally thank @AY Mod for his contributions to the hobby but he was nowhere to be seen, and the same for @Phil Parker but he was busy every time I passed by. Many thanks to both gentlemen.
And I only got bumped by rucksacks twice 😆

Thanks, glad you enjoyed City Basin Goods, it’s what makes attending shows a pleasure

I was parked in exhibitor parking bay 1 in the Paddock yesterday, displaying my exhibitor label thingey, but on checking the ECP 'Late Pay' website, it was me to pay. I have messaged @SteveCole so hopefully it can be sorted.

    Other exhibitors should check here:

I was also in Parking Bay 1 Paddock yesterday and it is reporting correctly that I arrived at 08:16, but that I owe £8.20.

On a happier note, thanks to all those who dropped by and chatted with me on City Basin Goods during the show and sorry if I didn't get round to all your layouts over the weekend.

  3. Two new pieces of motive power for City Basin Goods. Now weathered and nearly ready for service

I know the Clayton isn’t WR but I couldn’t resist.  It’ll be in industrial service as a super shunter tripping aggregate wagons to/from the exchange siding. After all that’s how D8568 survived working for Ribble Cement

Thanks all. I think I read that they were seen at Norwich in passenger service coming in from the Midlands, so I may be able to justify one on an East Anglian layout (lf a manufacturer makes one!).

    Hi

Yes, 120s worked the Norwich - Birmingham cross country services until they went over to loco hauled behind class 31's in May 1977 (I think I remember that correctly). After that they were not regular visitors at Norwich

Thanks to all concerned for a good show, quite making up for my missing both Warley last year and Ally Pally owing to industrial unrest.  For me it was a pilgrimage to see 'Newhaven Harbour', but I ended being bewitched by 'City Basin Goods' with some 'mindful shunting'.  Thank you to the owner for 'chewing the fat' with me and others.

Beautiful weather, the free 'bus was much appreciated (and a decider for my attending, like Gaydon).  Good hall layout (logical arrangement and much space), good grub, and friendly helpful demonstrators.  Stayed 5.5 hours, and still could not give deserved attention to all the layouts.  Thanks finally to the 'Scouts'(?) who appeared to be doing much good work scurrying 'behind the scenes', and on exit formed a 'parade of honour', smiling and hoping we had all enjoyed our day.  A credit to their 'pack'.  See you in 2024, and hope you make a profit.  Your hard work is much appreciated.

Thanks, nice to chat to you and all the others as well. Really good show, enjoyed attending very much (although my wallet wouldn’t agree 🤣). CBG largely behaved, although we had a coupling or 2 that needed repairing and one of the point micro switches will need adjusting when I unpack at home after playing up on Sunday afternoon. Also, several possible show invites received for 2024/5 😊

Has anyone been able to actually shunt prototypically with one of these locos on DCC, for anything more than a minute or two without it stalling?

I've given my two a serious running in, for an hour or so each in both directions, wheels cleaned and my track is spotlessly clean. Even when I pair them up I cannot get them to run without stopping in random places (often on plain line and with no particular pattern). I tried them on my layout at Glasgow and they lasted about 5 minutes before they were taken off... I'm using a Lenz LH100 by the way.

I don't understand how even as a pair, with 'stay alive', they can't keep each other running. The NGS stand staff who came to have a look at the situation at the exhibition were also baffled.

If anyone has experienced anything of the like with the Lenz controller, or might have a suggestion as to why it might be occurring, please let me know.

    Hi Benn

I too had problems with my Hunslet, despite cleaning the wheels thoroughly (which did improve things a bit). I'm on straight DC, but the loco would stall on plain track, not what I was expecting for something fitted with a keep alive chip. Anyway, after much head scratching I went to take the keeper plate off to see if there was a pickup issue and found that it had been screwed on extremely tightly. Having found no pickup problems I put the keeper plate back on, but only tightened the screws to the point where they stopped turning. Running was transformed and now at least on a par with my Farish 04.

Rumours (from wnxx.com) that the 60s will be gradually withdrawn as their engine hours reach heavy maintenance numbers.

The plan is that some 66s will be regeared to 66/6 spec to take over Class 60 duties.

This may be the time to get the 60 pics whilst you can.

That's going to be a real backward step on certain flows. 59/2s were tried on the Robeston - Theale tanks well over 10 years ago and found to be unsuitable so I can't see single 60mph geared 66s coping any better. I guess the only alternative will be double heading, and since a 60 is way more fuel efficient than even a single 66 that will  be expensive.

    Hi,

2-357 has the offset version of these brakes, as shown in most of the pics you refer to. The brakes were slightly different on the two sides, and that version with offset hangers was the most common variant for these tipplers ( An illustrated History of BR Wagons, Vol 1, D Larkin et al).

Thanks Nigel, will have to get some of those and see what I can do

  9. I would like to build up a rake of 10ft WB 27t Iron Ore Tipplers as used for aggregates traffic in the 70s

I’m happy to use the Peco kit, and years ago mounted a few on Peco 10ft WB chassis, but the brake gear is incorrect. The correct chassis should be as below

    https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/ironoretipplermsv

Does the 2mm Society do that chassis as a kit please ?  I can see a 10ft 8 shoe chassis kit listed, but am unsure if it’s this one

    Many thanks

  10. I've been wanting to take shots of the layout for some time that replicate the techniques that Chris Nevard uses having seen how he made City Basin Goods look in Model Rail

Finally got round to trying focus stacking of shots this morning and it works quite well, although not yet up to Chris's standards

    Here's my efforts

  11. Bout time I added something to this thread again

Now retired so more time to indulge in modelling, photography, and drooling over some of the layouts posted up on here (just catching up after some time away from RMWeb)

A recent EBay purchase is now ready for service after couplings changed and weathering completed

Had a bit of a tidy up over the weekend, desk still needs sorting out though......

I’ve constructed the three big brick gate posts that are the boundary into the Motorail terminal, some etched gates and fencing is enroute from Peedie Models. At the top of Olympia Way there were several 48 sheet billboards. I’m making four, the first two are pretty well finished complete with suitable advertising!

The billboards are just temporarily planted for the picture.

I put exactly the same Lambs Navy ad on City Basin Goods - fondly remembered by those of us of a certain age (certainly wouldn't be allowed today) !!

Those are Fodens (well, ERFs) but they may have, the Scammell Routeman 8 wheel was a very popular chassis for the same use and I remember seeing some of those on the M25 contracts in Herts discharging into what looked to be a mobile plant with no other infrastructure nearby.

There is often a mechanism immediately behind the cab on the powder tanks but for some commodities (including cement) these were hydraulics for tipping the load.  A quick google of images appears to (broadly) suggest no tubes on the side indicates a tipper, tubes  on the side indicates a vacuum or air discharge and possibly air/vacuum and tip.

A different type of tank on a ERF chassis shows blown loading/discharge equipment fitted:

Foden S21 Blue Circle banana tanker 3

a newer example of discharge into a bigger trailer with little or no extra infra is here:

Really need one of these in N for the cement terminal on City Basin Goods

If all else fails, I’ll just run them without lights. We never had lights in the past and they are so low level, you can barely see them anyway.

One of my pet subjects is the current obsession with lights on everything :)

OK for modern (post mid 80s - approx) locos with high intensity headlights, but anything before that with just marker lights/headcode panels or dots, I find the LEDs FAR too bright - even at night they weren't overly noticeable, and in the day, invisible
