  1. Like many spotters/photographers in the steam era my main attraction was the locos themselves, and it is only many years later that items which were unnoticed at the time a picture was taken now seem worthy of a second look. This an enlargement of the edge of a picture I took at Carlisle of the station pilot, Ivatt 2-6-2T No 41222, in May 1966. The vehicle has the running number W2937W and a search online informs me that this was a 1944-built Collett-design of gangwayed milk van. (Please correct me if I have that wrong.)

I am no expert on rolling stock, so my question is: in 1966 was it still used for milk traffic (and if so, where to/from in Carlisle?) or had the vehicle been rebuilt internally to do something else?

    Many thanks in advance

The RCTS Railway Observer is now available on-line. It isn't searchable in the way that the Railway Magazine archive or the Railway Modeller archive are, so if you don't have a date looking for information in it is like searching for a needle in a haystack, but if you do have a date - as you do - it can definitely be worth searching through the next few subsequent issues to see if there is any mention.

Thanks for the tip-off. I will report back if I find anything.

    Cheers

  3. A BR Type 2 assisting a Brush Type 4 may not be that unusual, but perhaps the diesel brake tender sporting the Express Passenger headlamps is, so I hope I get away with this. Anyway, it's another opportunity to show this picture of mine, on the off chance that someone, somewhere, may also have witnessed this event and made a note of the loco numbers. I took this at Low Fell (Gateshead) on 2nd August 1967 but I can't find any reference to which locos they are - it's the northbound car carrier, of course. Any help at this late stage would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If the headcode is correct, the train is a local stopper and, in view of the Western, may be going to Paignton to form an express back to Paddington.

Yes, I wondered about the headcode, but always assumed it was just 'wrong'. Perhaps someone with a WTT of the era could shed some light, please?

  5. I've just found this thread, hidden away in the 'Special interests - UK prototype' section.

I spent several happy summer holidays in the 1970s with a 'Western rail rover'-type ticket and have lots of pictures taken in Devon. Some of these have already been shared in the 'Diesel Hydraulic Group' section (under my 'Trev's Western wanderings' thread) in 2017.

  6. Once a familiar sight, now the only regular workings by HSTs at Newcastle are operated by CrossCountry between Plymouth and Edinburgh/Glasgow (apparently only two per day are rostered, one each way). Earlier this week on 12th June this is 43303 at the head of the 12.27 Plymouth-Glasgow crossing the King Edward Bridge over the Tyne into Newcastle (43239 was at the rear). Photographed from the Redheugh Bridge at about 19.40 (it was running late - due in at 19.32) There is also an Edinburgh-Plymouth working due in at 07.38 - too early for me to see it!

  7. I was waiting to photograph a XC HST crossing the Tyne over the King Edward Bridge (which didn't materialise) the other evening when a two-coach northern DMU appeared on the far High Level Bridge. Ramping up the telephoto setting I managed this picture. I'm not a DMU expert - is this a Class 158?

Parts of five of the seven bridges between Newcastle and Gateshead are visible in this picture, the missing ones being the Swing Bridge (it's too low and out of shot) and the Redheugh bridge (I'm standing on it!)

  8. As this topic is current again due to the new batch now being available, I thought it might be worthwhile to upload this picture of mine of the northbound Anglo-Scottish Car Carrier. (It was previously uploaded to this topic - not by me - in 2013, but the picture in that post now seems to be lost.) A brake tender with XP headlamps! The Brush Type 4 had apparently failed and been rescued by a Type 2 which looks like it was commandeered off a freight, still with the DBT attached. I took this at Low Fell, Gateshead on 2nd August 1967 but I did not make a note of the locos involved! I would be delighted to hear from anyone else who saw this working who can supply the missing details. To my eyes the brake tender looks like the new weathered green version as offered by Dapol - how close is it?

  9. Here are a couple of my 1967 9F pictures showing single chimney 92071 and double chimney 92208 from above. You can just make out the joins running down the smokebox from alongside the chimney, but not so pronounced as the Hornby representation.  These must correspond to the same thing as shown on the preservation-era pictures recently posted by Porcy Mane.

The pictures also show the join along the top of the boiler which G-BOAF mentions, below this post

For anyone interested, that's 55010 heading south out of Newcastle on 8th May 1976 (my photo). I didn't post it on Twitter - looks like it's been lifted from this RMWeb site (as mentioned by Flying Pig) and it has come back full circle! In addition to Modelling Zone-Prototype-UK Prototype Discussions-Deltic Class 55 photos, there is also a lot of info in Modelling Zone-Prototype-Special interests-Class 55 Group.

Has anyone modelled this variation as illustrated in my Brownie 127 shot of D9000 at Newcastle in 1964? As discussed a few pages back this loco was unique when first delivered as being fitted with experimental flashing warning lights above the buffer beams. Since these occupied the place where other Deltics had the front footstep, replacement footsteps had to be fitted on this loco, suspended from the top corners of the bufferbeam cutaway. By the time of my picture the flashing lights had been removed and the conventional front step had appeared in the same place, but the extra steps were still retained for a while as seen here. Not sure when they were removed, though.
