  1. The following four were taken on 1st May 1976, when 'Austerity' 2-8-0 No 1931 was in action, the number at the time being the one it bore when purchased from the Swedish State Railways. This was a brief visit with friends, on our way to photograph 4472 and 790 in action on BR in the Carnforth area.

The locations I will quote are educated guesses - please correct me if I'm wrong.

  2. @ Zomboid

Just realised, the previous negs on my strip of 35 film showing the Royal Train included this view of it coming over the King Edward Bridge into Newcastle. A shortened train of 5 coaches plus the DVT on the rear.

Looks like I legged it from the bridge to the building in the centre of Swan House roundabout for the elevated shot of the train departing north!

A quick web trawl confirms that was the date of the inauguration and that the Queen was at Kings Cross.  I know the 225s were very new at that time but in your photo 91029 looks suspiciously clean, like it would have been if hauling the Royal Train.

Brilliant! Thanks very much for that info. I must have been looking in the wrong place!

If I remember correctly the loco was immaculate and I think it had white wheel rims/tyres. There must be other shots of this somewhere, I expect.

    Cheers

  4. This is a recent scan from a neg I shot on 28th June 1991 of 91029 'Queen Elizabeth' heading north out of Newcastle. The info I wrote on the neg packet says '91029, Royal Train'. Could this be the train conveying Her Majesty to officially open the electrification to Edinburgh? I should have made more precise notes at the time but unfortunately I can't seem to find the info of the occasion online anywhere.

Thanks in advance for any ideas on this

  5. Not wishing to hijack anyone else's thread (and not having found one, anyway!) I have started my own, to show early pictures taken on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. Please feel free to add your own photos.

I'll start off with some b&w pictures taken over the weekend of 4th and 5th May 1991, when the active locos were Standard 4 No 75078 (running tender-first up the bank to Oxenhope) and USA tank No 30072.

  7. Wow! I watched this over three sessions (it lasts about 72 minutes in total) and I was completely enthralled.

I suspect this will not be everybody's cup of tea, however - it is rather quirky at times and does not just feature a procession of standard three-quarter front views of trains powering past (although it does include quite a few of these). But the action shots are superb. The viewpoints chosen, the lighting, the sound and the exhaust effects are, in the main, brilliant.

Despite the weird premise in the title It comes across rather as the adventures of three likeable German enthusiasts exploring four of this country's heritage  lines and also taking in a main line run by 'Jubilee' Galatea. This latter section provided my favourite clip - two of the filmmakers are standing on a footbridge as the train roars past below, with an unexpected result. I had to replay that bit of the film to take it in!

As well as the trains we see lots of examples of the peripheral scenes on and around the railways. I do not speak German so I missed the point of the 'talking' sheep and cows beside the NYMR - I assume they were making some references to the hordes of enthusiasts who had come to enjoy the sight of steam in action on the 1 in 49 up to Goathland.

The production values of this film are superb - the camerawork, sound and editing would not be out of place on a TV programme.

Thank you for providing the link. I expect I will watch it again, several times, in case I missed anything the first time through!

Another at one of my favourite locations before trees and overhead wires spoilt the view - 43158 northbound near King Edward Bridge Junction on 20th June 1987. Looks like the driver has 'copped' this power car - the number on the front has been underlined!

Ha! This reminds me of this shot of mine from 3rd August 1965 taken at Haymarket station, Edinburgh. That's D5338 on the right. More of an age of innocence then, I think?
