  1. Just a couple of detailing projects to report , A simple skip made from cereal box card and plastic strip suitably distressed ! A simple telegraph pole made using a barbecue skewer with a scrap of plastic for the junction box , the insulators come from the Dapol / Airfix poles
  2. Only a smidgen though , if you stand back a bit it doesn't look so bad !
  3. Started to blend the fence into the ground ; Just need to add a few more weeds and undergrowth and the warning signs . As you can see I also made a simple A4 skybox to take the pics against using resources from here ; http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/97516-looking-for-printable-grey-sky-backscene/
  4. More work done on the gates and fencing , I have also been trying to print my own signs , it took a few attempts to get the scaling right ! . Despite appearances due to camera wobble they are in fact readable , I just need a more neatly trimmed one for the finished article. A quick mockup of it in place so still a bit wonky , just need to fix it down and blend it into the ground .
  5. Starting work on a fence and gates to go between the two buildings on the back edge , the gates are just Slaters sheet and microstrip ; Seems the nightwatchman has been caught short on his rounds ! " B****r , where are my keys ? " Just need to tidy them up a bit.
  6. Well its been a while since I last posted anything , the layout has kind of been on the backburner for a while and not a great deal has changed . A new structure has appeared as a corner filler , scratchbuilt from Wills sheets and a nice pile of knackered old pallets to give a sense of purpose to the yard area ; Questions , comments more than welcome.
  7. To be honest I don't know how most of the businesses survive in that end of the city . Not to sound like a moaning Derby Telegraph reader but the worst thing that ever happened to Derby is that shopping center , I can remember when the Sadler Gate area was one of the busiest parts of the city now its a virtual ghost town ! A shame the shop has closed though , it was always a nice friendly place to visit and seemed to have a thriving gaming community and while the railway stock was never comprehensive , the owner was more than happy to order stuff in if asked.
  8. Hi mate , To be honest not a great deal at the moment , the layout has kind of been put on the back burner . I have been thinking of adding a couple more buildings , here's a couple of mockups I have been looking at ;
  9. Here is a little project I have been busy with recently ; As you can see just a simple repaint to start and while I am aware of the excellent etches available from Jon Hall for the pulley wheels and counterweight ( see this thread http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/45589-trianghornby-r127-crane-conversion/ ) I had a Dapol diesel crane in the junk box so used some of the parts from that to make the pulley wheels , the decking on the crane platform is just scribed plasticard. Here we have the runner wagon for the crane , simply a suitable conflat wagon repainted ; Here is a departmental brake van to go with the crane , a Hornby LMS brakevan renumbered using Modelmaster transfers and some plasticard to represent the added ballast box ; All together now ; Just need to find something to use for a tool van now ! , cheers for looking .
  10. See this topic for a discussion about the accuracy of this particular model http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/52236-ye-olde-trianghornby-r118-bogie-well-wagon/
  11. Next job is to sheet over the top of the decks with thin plasticard to cover the rivet holes and using Slaters embossed sheet make the decking for the well. Obviously the bogies just clip into the mountings and luckily I had some wheels from a couple of Parkside kits spare , here it is primed for painting ; Here we are with the base coat on ( the transfers are from a Dapol brake van kit ! so are completely wrong , but they just add that little extra detail ) Here it is made to look like its seen a bit of service ; All in all a fun little project and obviously it would have been better with accurate transfers but I am happy with the way its turned out .
  12. After picking one of these up ages ago at a swap meet for pennies I thought I would have a go at updating it. Re-wheeling Having read a few threads on here about replacing the old plastic or metal wheels on these things or using Cambrian etc kit bogies , I had a rummage in my bits box to see what I could do. I had an old broken Mainline bogie wagon and realised I could use the bogies and after some cutting , part of the chassis for the mountings. So the old Triang bogies were drilled out and I got rid of the big plastic mounting underneath and with a bit of trimming the Mainline mountings fitted just right ; You can also see I have removed the well section to give a bit more depth to the well .
  13. Just been out in the garden seeing about getting some better pics ;
  14. Some of the latest progress , I know the pics are not great ( especially the first one ! ) but you get the idea ;
  15. More work done on one of the structures ; Took the trouble of adding gutters and drainpipes from the Wills detailing pack and after finding some Plastruct steps in my local model shop made up some steps. A quick tip , if you want to make some steps , make sure you get the matching Plastruct hand rails ( my shop didnt have them ) as it was a very fiddly job making my own ! Just to get an idea of it in the scenery ; Thanks for looking .
  16. Funnily enough , your " Bridge St " layout was one of the things that made me change direction , it has a fantastic real world atmosphere about the buildings and the settings .
  17. Thanks everyone for the continued interest and comments. As for magazines Im not sure its something they would be interested in ! Anyway as usual when I build layouts , after looking at other layouts on here and looking at my own work , I always end up changing my plans. While at first I was happy with the loading tower theme after looking at my latest pictures I just dont think it worked visually and have decided to take a different path. I have set about modding one of the structures into something with a bit more of a generalised industrial theme ; As you can see just the addition of some Wills brick sheet and a repaint and some old Triang tanker bodies as storage tanks. To me anyway I just think it looks a bit more contemporary and " real world " ! Anyway more to follow .
  18. Thanks everyone for the encouragement , progress is slow but it is happening ! Painted the loading shed to match the tower just need to finish the roof ; Filled in more of the groundwork around the points , justs needs a little weathering to match it up ( if you compare the two shots the flash shows up the difference between the fresh and the weathered stuff ) Here we have more of the hardstanding added , this is just thick mounting card ( the stuff you get from art shops ) painted up , will probably have another structure in the top left corner to take up some of the empty space ; Finally just a general shot to set the layouts mood ! Thanks for looking and as usual all comments , questions etc most welcome.
  19. Right , I finally got round to start on the painting of the loading tower .I originally started with an obvious grey scheme but it looked a bit boring so went for something that would stand out a bit more ; The colour I used is Vallejo "dark sand" and I think it makes it really "pop out" Here it is on the layout to give an idea of what it looks like in the scene , the first pic is not its final position ; Just need to put the conveyor belt in the loading chute , this will probably be just a ribbon of painted paper with an aggregate load glued on threaded through the framework.
  20. Hopefully so although I wont make any commitments at this point . ( if that's OK )
  21. Here we go , I have been making slow progress what with christmas and working night shifts ( Im either in bed or working ! ) Anyway heres a few pics ( sorry about the quality but you get the idea ) Two Dapol minerals I put together ; New scratchbuilt shed ; General shots showing more groundwork ;
  22. Right after a long time with no updates ; More landscaping , the usual polystyrene and filler recipe ; More work done on the track and groundcover , overspill added and general mess ; Also managed to fit a roof to the loading structure ; Just some general shots ;
  23. How about this ? Came across this works shunter working some wagons while out for a walk near WP Quarry , Derbyshire I must admit to cheating a little and adding a backgroud in PS !
  24. Finally managed to do some work on the loading plant ; Wills asbestos sheet ( Model shop didnt have any corrugated iron in stock ! ) A sense of scale ; Obviously still a way to go
