  1. Yes. I’ve just reread Couerdelyon’s last comment and they were only expecting samples at end of Jan/Feb. Hopefully production is now under way but I would imagine it is unlikely to be delivered before Q4. Oh well gives my credit card a break after the Mainline coaches and Rapido wagons

  2. I don't suppose anyone has had an update on when these are arriving? Great news on the 517/48xx, but I had hoped it would have triggered an update on the autocoach

  3. GWR etches applied, painted and weathered. Also number plates and new dome added. I think the dome is a bit large, but it was the most suitable one I could find for a GWR loco with a curved boiler.

I've added the words 'Great Western' to the tank sides. I couldn't find conclusive evidence that this livery was applied, but given the Victories were 'Swindonised' I have assumed it would have been.

Now I've seen the photo I may just tone the weathering down a bit.

  4. That’s a very good question Peter and one I agonised with myself. In the end I used liquid, as opposed to gel, superglue. I wouldn’t say I made a perfect job of it, but it’s ok and the frets are holding firm. Make sure you check the fit before gluing and cut the fret  out carefully. The thin part above the cab door is particularly delicate.

I’d be interested if anyone has an alternative approach but obviously too late for me

  5. Hi - could someone from BRM clarify if the intentio GWR signal box is OO or O please? It's described as OO in the magazine, but I can only see an O gauge one on the Intentio website (a query to Intentio has gone unanswered). Thanks

Is that more or less conflict in the world?

If that what it comes down to…. Maybe we can’t afford to manufacture outside our own territory….

The cost of arming ships, vs EU manufacturing….. I know there’s a long way to go, but it does beg the question.

Whatever your views on Brexit, isn't the EU outside 'our territory' :-) ?

I'm not sure of the cost impact, but onshore production would have potential for bringing forward delivery dates

I'd be interested in learning more about your experiences of removing the metal dome and safety valves?

Like you I'm waiting on the corrected etches but haven't yet started on any of the other conversion work.

To be honest if I had my time over again I wouldn't take the dome off. It wasn't easy and took a lot of cutting and particularly filing. The latter leading to minor damage to the boiler. I think the new dome I have is too tall, but a search revealed nothing better. The dome James suggests is not suitable as it has a flat base. The safety valve I took off with a small razor saw and then flatten ed off with a file

No argument from me on those points, McC, you're spot on dead right, but that would be between £375 and £700, plus replacement of a dozen turnouts with electro/unifrogs, and that would be a very costly thing for me to allocate my very limited income to.  I can't possibly afford it!  In order to have the railway I want in the quality I want I have no choice but to use DC.

When I returned to the hobby in 2016 after a 35-year divorce/unsettled lifestyle hiatus, the intention was to use the locos and stock that I'd managed to retain as the basis for the new railway.  These all worked fine when it had hit the fan, but some were Mainiine split-chassis (panniers, 56xx) and there was an Airfix 61xx.  The rest of the story tells itself, within a year all had had to be replaced, mazak rot for the Mainlines and split slide bars on the prairie (this was spectacular; the piston rod came out of the cylinder and dug in to the ground, somersaulting the loco to the floor).  They would have likely proved difficult to chip anyway.  So the decision was to remain with DC, and was a die that was cast; too late to change course now unless my lotto comes up.  It must be my turn soon, surely...

Were I restarting now, I might make different choices; I would certainly be using code 75 chaired track!

Very similar to me, apart from no divorce and I ended up using code 75 track. All my old Mainline, Airfix and Wrenn stock is now history. I'm not sure if I would have gone for DCC anyway given the relative simplicity of my layout, but I do wish the bullhead track had been around in 2016.

BTW not that I have lived in Cardiff, but I spent many years working there

  9. Hello all. I apologise if this has already been covered, but with the new large prairie release is there a 7 year gap in coverage (from 1927 to 1934)?

If I have read correctly all those numbered in the 31 series were renumbered to 51 series in 1927, but I can't see Dapol listing a 51 number with 'Great Western' livery, these only being with the shirtbutton livery.

    Thanks

  10. I've now read the previous comments on this matter and wish I'd read these earlier.

I have no issue with BRM adding freebies to the print versions sold in the shop which are not on the subscription version.

What annoyed me is that the article states you can buy them from the BRM website and made no reference to the fact that you can pick them up cheaper by buying a the shop version

I will be more wary in future

  11. Dan - I didn't know you offered cups of tea. Make mine a bacon sandwich and cup of coffee from your excellent eating establishment downstairs next time I call in, hopefully for my new Collett coaches :-)

  12. Re Terraced Houses

I am a subscriber to the printed edition of BRM and was pleased at the time to read about the low relief terraced houses that have been commissioned by BRM. I  promptly ordered 2 from the online shop at £9.99 each. However, I was horrified to see today that if I had bought the printed magazine from a shop I would have got a free terraced house. I could have bought an additional 2 copies and saved myself £10. I'm not happy......

  13. I'm lucky enough to live close enough to call in to the shop. Always very friendly, accommodating (more than happy to do one off orders) and excellent prices (just recently bought a loco that was at least £9 cheaper than larger outlets).

    Cheers Dan x 2
