  1. Afternoon Tony

Just reading the Steam Days and a photo of City of Coventry leaving Birmingham New Street the caption reads that it carried four liveries in BR days Blue,Green, 1958 BR maroon and from 1960 LMS maroon.

Maybe that answers my question !  Hope the rebuild chassis is coming along nicely for you .

Thanks for your comments I should have known that you would pick up on the bogie wheels they are just the Romford ones supplied with the kit, it’s cost me a few quid up to now ,somewhere lost from me receiving it from my nephew a coupling rod had been lost so I ended up having to buy a valve gear set off comet and a set of transfers off Fox for a maroon Duchesses doesn’t come cheap but I will replace those wheels in the grand cost of things it will be well worth it.

Talking of wheel diameters I went to the GCR model exhibition (I left some stuff with Mo for you a give to kids sorry if it wasn’t any use to you ) anyway while at Loughborough I went into the sheds and stood next to 45305 my eldest lad who stands six foot five was impressed with the size of the wheels and asked what size they were I said I think they are six foot but I was looking at the top of the rim and I am five foot ten ,it was only when we moved up to 45491 which I presume has a new wheel set and that I realised how much the wear on the tyres altered appearance of the loco , so when we use Romford wheels we can always use smaller sizes, was it two inches wear on driving wheel tyres,  I wonder if it’s the same on bogie wheels ?

Back to shades of maroon at the back of my mind I think I read somewhere the earlier Duchesses were a paler maroon, was the original Hornby Doublo model City of London  in that lighter shade?

  3. Afternoon Tony and all,

Funny how after posting about Duchesses that this months copy of Steam Days drops though the letter box with an article showing colour photos of Duchesses, now I will be attempting a maroon loco and I remember my late brother having quite a heated debate with the then proprietor of Precision Paints regarding the shades of maroon on Duchesses, my brothers argument was that the original shade was a lighter one than that applied later on, looking at photos pre 1962 seems to bear this up as photos from 62/64 do seem a darker shade, so was there a change in paint specs from the first ones being painted to the last ones being repainted?  or is it in the mind or the colour film of the day ?

  4. Hi Tony,

Just had a catch up, how fast this thread moves is quite amazing and the subjects from V2s, hung drawn and quartered !! cameos on layouts, I had the pleasure to visit the miniature wonderland in Hamburg a few years ago that was quite mind blowing .

Anyway back to now and I was wondering which Duchess escaped you ? The only steam class that I nearly cleared were the Britannia’s, Lord Hurcomb being the missing one, I have seen a photo of it at Manchester Victoria,  my main spotting station in my early youth and it’s a what if !

When you made your DJH Duchess a few weeks ago again you inspired me to dig my late brothers 75% finished model out and try and complete it , he had motor fitted and a running chassis, I’ve just fitted the cylinders and completed the valve gear , just some more body detailing and then I will be attempting to complete it to Duchess of Hamilton, I surprised my son who is into his railways by this choice, he thought I would do Manchester but he will be able to run the loco on his layout one day in the future and remember his uncle and dad

  5. Good Morning All,

Would I be correct in thinking that to make a catch point I can print off say an A 4.5 point on TEMPLOT and it’s just a case building a point up to wear the wing rails start ?  And do you still use the same amount of sliding chairs ?

An agent is only an agent, of the footballer.  The footballer doesn't have to employ one and doesn't have to do what the agent advises.  It could be said that the agent does nothing more than capitalise on the footballer's greed, or more generously that he does his best to secure the best deal for his client (and himself) and to protect his client's interests in an industry that is prepared to pay stupid sums of money (to him as well as the player - I undertand that Liverpool paid out £43.8 million last year to agents alone).

FIFA could change the rules and may well do so - it is considering changing its rules so only a player can pay the agent, while limiting the percentage of the contract the player then has to share with a representative. It is likely to be capped at around 5%.

All the money going out of the game on agents fee , it’s obscene like you mention FIFA could stop it overnight if they had the will power, if a player uses an agent that’s fine but he or she pays the fee not the clubs, I wonder if Paul Pogba would have been happy to pay 40 million out of his pocket .

  7. It would be an interesting conversation with an original Salford fan when FC United was set up I think Salford had 100/200 gates ,now I would think they wanted to watch non league football, if they had wanted league football they had a good choice to go to , so their new owners come along with a desire to get to the championship ! What do the original fans do ? Stay for the journey or find another non league club to follow.

  8. Salford’s accounts for last year in the NPL showed a £32000 per week loss !! I would imagine that will have treble this current season, all well and good till the class of 92 get bored with their toy , all be it it’s not their money being lost.

  9. Football will be a loser if clubs like Gateshead disappear, being quiet new to non league football I do wonder how a lot of clubs survive on the gates they have, we have just been relegated from the NPL ( proper club now ) because we had a budget and had to stay with it, I am amazed at the number of clubs in that league that are full time !

Ok they have ambitions or ambitious owners and that can lead financial ruin, maybe all leagues should introduce rules regarding how much debt is allowed, something like what’s being applied to the championship league.

Yes. The wheels are already in motion... http://www.gfcsoul.co.uk/2019/05/statement-from-gateshead-fc-soul/

The hope is that we can enter the pyramid in Northern League Division 1 (that's where Darlo went back in). There is an awful lot to do over the next few months but the intention is that there will be a football club playing in Gateshead next season.

I wish you all the best in setting up a new Gateshead fan owned club for next season , what ever league you find yourselves in your be a big part of YOUR club.

In 2005 I left MUFC and became a supporter/owner of FCUM in the Northwest Counties div 2 , loved everything I saw and have been part of the journey ever since, so good luck in getting the ball rolling .

My season ticket at Cardiff City has just been renewed, at the same price as last season.

    .

£149 - if we stay up, that's Premiership football at around £8 per game, Championship football at less than £7 per game........either way, the ticket costs the same as a new 00 gauge loco.

    .

Those of us who watch football regularly (50yrs in my case), supporting unfashionable clubs, don't see our Premiership team as a "brand" or view ourselves as "mugs".

Can’t knock that,  Cardiff’s prices are cheaper than most non league clubs

Maybe...but they were my boyhood local club, My tribe, part of my life and I will take the good and bad as it comes......you cant just trade that...........and before you say it we get mugged for that loyalty as fans.

I did trade it , when my boyhood club that I had followed since 1964 became the worlds greatest franchise !! I left it behind and started following a new non league club and fell in love with the non league game , we became a proper club today following our first relegation !!

It's not Solskjaer that the problem it's the players........

As a Arsenal fan mugging you guys off with Alexis was brilliant business on our part. He is a talented player but a complete mercenary and the Perm is full of such players ..........Chelsea have the same problem.........The players just down tools if they don't like the management knowing that they'll get them the sack and then have a little bonce when the new guy comes in.

Not enough development of academy or Championship players is happening to develop teams with a bond. You can see it in all the top teams and it no surprise that the 2 most cohesive teams are head and shoulder better than the rest.

Watching premier league football is a mugs game !!  It’s like a designer label ,a brand that people have to have !! so break free and get yourself to a non league match and see lads playing just for the enjoyment of playing.

  14. Hi Tony

Thanks to your post on LB and seeing your B16s I had another attempt to complete my B16/3 kit which unbelievably I started in 1980 ,I just couldn't get it to go round the layout I had at that time , I have changed the chassis round since my Oct post and I'm now pleased with the rear axle center being in line with the front of the cab. Ready for painting .

finished it , she has  had a good test run ,front bogie I did it like I planned, like a RTR loco ,the link arm caused a lot of problems last time!

A few pages back you asked about an A2/1being on a wish list , I wonder where a B16/3 is on any list ? I would like a B16/1 !! so maybe another kit to buy.

  15. Morning Tony,

You asked for A2s , this is the last kit my late brother made it’s a modified DJH kit like all his locos runs brilliantly, he wouldn’t let me spray his finished work , guess he thought it took away his complete ownership!

I’ve finished my B16 and will post it here later.
