  1. Hi Folks, I haven't been near the shed since last winter as my wife filled it with stuff heading for a monster car boot sale. Looking to start spending a bit more time down there. Next job is to start mocking up some platforms and buildings I think.
  2. Don, it looks as though you have removed the purlin posts which are perpendicular to the angle of the roof in favour of your vertical stud wall. Did you have structural engineer or building inspector look this first? IMHO you are changing the way the load from the roof structure and tiles acts and you may see some potential for spreading of the roof. A nice space non the less! Good luck with the project. Rgds Russell
  3. Bit more track laid over Christmas. Platform roads and carriage sidings.
  4. First couple of appropriate locos converted are an N and a Class 4 tank. My father actually did both the conversions using Alan Gibson conversion packs from the EM Gauge Society.
  5. As I mentioned previously space has meant that I have a climb into Ilfracombe rather than a steep drop but there you go, can't have everything. I'd probably would want to include Braunton. A mate of mine runs a retro skateboard shop there and didn't even know there'd be a railway 100 yards from his shop. He lead a group of locals who built a skate bowl next to to the goods shed and dug up the cast iron pipe for the water column!
  6. I thought it was four but I'd have check the book shelf to be sure. I had to loose the one on the engine shed road as I've had to add some extra curves to make the station fit.
  7. Thanks for staying tuned in! Yes C&L flexitrack.
  8. Building up a fair bit of stock at the moment including Bulleid Pacifics, Ns, M7s, Class 2 & 4 and Ivatt Tanks, Pannier & Collett 0-6-0s, Class 21, Hymeks and Warshps. Coaching stock includes out of the box Bulleid, Maunsell & Mk1s plus a fair number of Ian Kirk kits as well. Just hoping for a lottery win over Christmas to pay for wheels to convert to EM.
  9. track laid leading in to my representation of Ilfracombe. Just waiting for some cork underlay to arrive and then I can lay the platform all the track in the station. Engine realease crossover is the only point work still to build.
  10. I couln't have described the challenge better myself!
  11. I would have loved to have done everything with timber sleepers and chairs but it was taking me much too long, I'm sure others may be able to use that method and match the spead but I cerainly couldn't. Every time I look at a layout built with separate chairs I wish I had the time to go that route but I know that having tried both it's just not feasible if I want to finish the layout anytime before the next ice age.
  12. I've also made a start on a representation of Ilfracombe. I say representation because I have had to make to major compromises. Firstly in order to fit a continous run circuit in to the shed the line rises in to Ilfracombe rather than dropping down the steep hill. Secondly due to lack of space the Engine Shed and Turntable arrangement has had to be moved around a bit. Anyway here's a few piccies of the general templot plans with some initial point work built and sitting in place.
  13. Barnstaple junction all wired and working, only on analogue at the moment but plans afoot for DCC option. A couple of pictures on the Barnstaple side of the layout so far,
  14. Bit more track laying taking place. Probably only one more turnout to build before I lay the track through the station and start on the wiring..
  15. Hi Chris, Garden Shed is 20' x 10' Rgds Russell
  16. Hi Nick, DCC for Locos. Old fashioned wiring for pointwork. Rgds Russell
  17. New section of track on the work bench. The big V is the entrance in to the South (east) end of the platforms.
  18. Hi James Have a look at the following, The North Devon Line Irwell Press In the tracks of the ACE Jeffery Grayer Branch lines to Torrington Exeter to Barnstaple Branch Line to Ilfracombe The last three all Middleton Press Lines to Torrington The North Devon Line Both by John Nicholas
  19. Hi John, I started out with great intentions to build using ply and C&L chairs but to be honest I have got so many other things to do in my life I simply wouldn't have made any progress. I love the look of the real chairs but had to compromise I'm afraid.
  20. You can see what I needed the West Country brake rigging for now! WRT to your offer of details, I think I have almost every book on the subject but there are still quite a few holes. If you have anything regarding the loco depot, coaling stage, water tank etc that would be very interesting. Also have you ever seen any drawings/plans for any of the buildings; station, goods shed etc?
  21. Here's the overall plan. I have had to make some compromises that I'm not happy with but couldn't think of any other options. Firstly to allow myself a continous run the track in to Ilfracombe climbs rather than falls, this allows both the Torrington branch and a second Ilfracombe branch track to drop below and loop round to the GWR branh "A" to "A". "B" is a future option for a breakout in to the garden and a loop back. Barnstaple Goods yard and loco depot is yet to be designed.
