I am posting some of my latest photos of the new Hornby king, after receiving my new king class. wow, but was a bit disappointed in some of what they had done hence my modifications. some really silly mistakes from Hornby. I do model the late 1950s, early 1960s hence the weathered state of my king. This may upset a few die hard gwr king fans, but the kings weren't all that clean in the 60s. Photos from the period show the king George v no. 6000 with painted black buffers, weathered frames and top of boiler. Hardly the kings you see in preservation, e.g. king Edward I no.6024 u can see your face in her paint work. So what did I do, well here we go - happy for feedback:
You will note that I have removed the atc pipe work on the running plate This was a preserved modification that they had done to comply with network rail fitting tpws. Yes some castles did have this but not kings. The atc on kings was not on under the bogies. Why Hornby added this to this model I don't know. The Hornby King Georg V model hasn't got the atc pipe.
You will note that I painted the oil pots to reflect their original brass. Hornby missed some of the lubricator pipe work on both the driver side and fireman's side. I also lifted the boiler bottom half of the model up so its flush and then added lining.
The pipe work on the smoke box looked flat. So I removed this and used wire to add depth to make more 3d. Hornby had made these a separate item on the Castle but not here. Cost cutting ?
You may have noticed the boiler band clip also added behind the steam pipe. The bogie had the NEM pocket removed and then filled. I had also added some pipe work on the driver side in front of the cylinder and added cylinder drain cock links.
also added oil pots behind the cylinder to oil the piston gland, and the oil pot on slide bar also added
moving back, over flow from the injector added. In this period I model the loco has a w b boiler so has a steel access panel behind safety valves on the driver side only, I also added access panels on fire box before cab ,I moved sand boxes forwarded by 2 mm , plus added a yet another boiler band clip behind name plate . my loco did not come with speedo link to motion not like my Hornby castle ! I had 1 spear so I added that too
view down the foot plating looks a lot better now ? in matt to appose to satin as this was always the last thing to be cleaned but was probably do with safety not standing on oil and paraffin ?
cab I had removed seats as these were not used when I add my figures to the cab. plus don't know of a driver that can reach controls of any gwr loco sitting down yah the reverser ! .you would have to be 7 ft. tall . I know Terence Cuneo painted a driver on a cab on a castle trust my when I say its not possible I have tried on Clun at Tyseley . also Hornby put a hydrostatic lubricator in the cab this is incorrect with the mechanical lubricator on the side . I added a spare gauge I had to simulate the oil no oil gauge in the cab you can just make it out when loco and tender are together , tender wise I could have added more pipe work under the tender but left this off . but did add the tender anti slip tread on the tender top step, painted the water gauge black not green thanks again Hornby
I have also added howes dcc sound to the loco too not rocket science 8 pin with a 28mm speaker under the standard Hornby weight.
well hope you all like the photos and what I have done to the loco It took a lot of research to compete . what next 6000 ??? in br 1960s or think that running the beginning and the end numbers silly ???
