  1. Undoubtedly. As the older 4-wheelers bit the dust in the early-30s, loco buffer-packing increased.

Which reminds me, I'm fairly certain a 48xx worked the Malmesbury branch with a new Bristol Division B-set from 1933.

Malmesbury seems to have had 58xxs rather than 48s. Fenton's book has pictures of a freshly overhauled set of 4-wheelers dated 1933, and a reference to new B-sets a year latr. Certainly 58xx + B-set post-war.

  2. The pictures of B12s in RCTS part 2B suggest that LNER livery may have been inconsistent in this respect. The picture of 8573 at Cromer in 1934 in the condition modelled by Hornby appears to show green axle ends and wheel bosses, but it is possible this effect is created by weathering and the vagaries of black and white photography. Other pictures show both black and green axle ends.

  3. Thanks guys.

So is it fair to say that the Hawksworth one is basically the same as the Collett one but with modifications?

If you believe that a Hawksworth County is basically the same as a Saint but with modifications, then yes.

  4. And this is why I am worried about the Chinese building a nuclear plant in Essex. If they can't build model railway products to a sufficient quality, how will they manage something as complex as a nuclear power plant???? Slightly more severe consequences if something 'falls off'/breaks/wrong back to back measurements etc...

Presumably you're not serious? Comparing a lack of glue on a toy with the processes needed to build a nuclear power station?

  5. You'll have to forgive my ignorance as I am quite new to all of this, especially all the different carriages.  The two coaches in the range that contained first class compartments.  I also mean the all third class carriage that wasn't a brake.

The coaches that contain first class compartments are first/third composites. The other ones you refer to are just Thirds.

  6. Does anyone think Hornby will re-release these coaches in the same livery?  They've gone incredibly quickly and the re-release would probably sell well too.  I'm on the lookout for the two 1st class coaches although I have the other 3.  I could do with another 3rd class composite to extend my rake a little.

Good luck with that- the range didn't include any firsts. And what is a third class composite?

  7. The difference being of course that these hobby products are not cheap at all

I disagree, for what they are in terms of detail, finish and fidelity to prototype RTR locomotives now are fantastically cheap.

  8.  The Trix A2 appeared, re-numbered and named to represent Blue Peter. Of course in true Reithian values fashion the maker's name could not be mentioned so for many of us it took a while for the knowledge of who made it to filter down.

Thanks for solving that - I've been (vaguely) wondering what that model was for the last fifty years, and never knew that Trix made an A2, until now :onthequiet:

  9. Hmmm! 35seconds eh?

Even if the car stalled you could still get out of the car and run, probably.

Oh, the baby in the back, are there's the rub.

Not only did she not show any sense of self preservation but didn't show any thought for the baby!

    35 seconds eh?

It's a CCTV crossing. If the car had stalled, the train would have been stopped at the protecting signal. No-one was in any danger, but it was still a stupid thing to do.

  10. So 6029 has the ATC gear in the cab. Still no explanation as to why it doesn't seem to be in most of the range (ie all of them except 6000 and 6029).

Surely Hornby don't think it's a BR 1950s period feature?

  11. Since no RTR manufacturer has ever made a GW loco with working valve gear that could fall off, that's hardly surprising.

    Connecting and coupling rods, though...

  12. I see no ATC gear in 6029. If the position is where I think (ahead of the driver's seat, below the side window) it would probably need to be moulded as part of the window glazing and then coloured - with obvious cost implications. (CJL)

It's prominent inside the cab window on 6000 (see http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/100251-locomotion-models-announce-d8000-and-king-george-v-models/page-4), but not there on my 6011 and on those that other people have posted pictures of.

  13. That looks good Tony.  You'll be pleased to know that a picture in Antony Ford's Pullman Profile No. 3 shows Lorraine in 1967 with the kitchen window painted as you have done (actually it doesn't look as neatly painted).

Correct Dave.  It received the revised (stretched) version of crest.  However, by 1961 it was allocated to the Southern Region.  So Tony's version looks correct for late 50s Eastern region.

How many Rs in the real Lor®aine?
