  1. Talk to an old C&W examiner in the Cardiff Valleys and they’d tell you the GWR “OK” boxes ran with more water in them than oil, being more open round the back. Grease boxes would have stayed more on privately owned mineral wagons, than “company” wagons.
  2. Curses! Beaten on the draw again! A noble ambition, but seriously, how much walking have you done? are your feet acclimatised? what sort of distances are you planning? you're not carrying more than a day sack? North, Scotland in August, midges? Signed, Most concerned of RWB.
  3. I think our hero has gone to Paintham Green.
  4. Thanks for making the video and posting it, Callum, it was beautifully made for showing the layouts. I should really have gone, but it gives me an enjoyable session for seeing what was there.
  5. The one to look out for is when you’re walking home and a car pulls in and starts asking for directions, then he goes on about being at a trade fair at a local hotel, etc…..
  6. Well, you got your pictures in the photo file, then at the bottom of your text box where you’re typing your reply, it says “drag files here to attach, or choose files” so you click on “choose files” and you get “photo library” and then you click on that, and you see the range of your pictures, so you click on the one you want, then top rh corner “get”, and the picture transfers to under your reply, and so you click on “done/insert”, and bobs your mothers brother. Best wishes from a Shropshire exile..
  7. Whoops, I notice this photo is taken after preservation, so it’s not the 1950s coat of paint in the picture, like what I remember. (Modern phone box) my excuse it’s hard finding a picture in the right format to download. The Konigliche Sachsiche StaatsEisenbahn didn’t get the green right either.(state flag)
  8. Well, boss, there were these two pilot engines at York and Newcastle in the late fifties: Im afraid depending on the film and the light, they could appear a much lighter shade.
  9. Actually, I did do a little bit yesterday, in among all the turmoil of selling the house - well, there’s a sign outside, and it’s on Zoopla, etc., but minimal interest, probably because of skyrocketing mortgage rates. Anyway, I succumbed to a cheap little tank car on eBay, and fortunately my toolbox is still here, so out with a craft knife, screwdriver, and some fine files. It’s a 28’ long tank car, just the correct length, and you’ll see I’m working along removing the moulded on handrails, which will need to be replaced with some brass rod. What happened to the undercart? Well, the screwdriver was pushed between that and the tank, given a tweak, (it just clips in) and it was thrown in the bin. Couplers and wheel-sets, I’m afraid to say, are terrible, as being from Lionel, you see. Sometimes their body mouldings can look quite decent. Not much left to do before I’ll need paint and chassis materials, which are all packed away in Cheltenham.
  10. Visitors to “Beyond Dover” will know there is a link to “ScaleTrainsClub”, on page 20, which is a site for modellers who can converse in Cyrillic sort of thingys. However, seekers after the truth and searching for details of vehicles from them parts should be warned that you can pick up Trojans in the process on your computer.
  11. It must help if you say you can go to London, even when somewhere nicer is in mind?
  12. C.F. PUY DE DOME. Anybody watching the Tour?
  13. Thank you, Jacky, it’s funny how this fancy for shortening all the rolling stock items has got hold of me over the last few years, hopefully I can try to keep the whole scene in balance, and it won’t look too horrible. For now I’ve cleared everything of mine out of the house we’re moving from, and it’s stored waiting in the garage of my daughters house, just round the corner from the new place. As a result I can only do “research” on my pad for now. Here’s a view of the main board of the new line, stored away for now, which I cobbled up just a few days before my health failed, strangely enough. It was reclaimed from a board which formed half of an old American line, which needed to be made rectangular, and all the old cork ballast layer stripped off. It’s 42.75” x 12”, 1080mm x 307mm, compared with the popular IKEA “Lack” shelf at 1100mm x 260mm, and I think the extra width will come in just right. Definitely a place for shorty trains!
  14. Puns seem to be required on American models, must get to work cooking up some more for when we move.
  15. Boeing did better when they got the drawings off Swindon:
  16. “L’AGE D’OR” Going a bit commercial here, there’s a lavish book on upmarket French 0 models, coupled with the Museon di Rodo layout, has recently been published, which may be of interest. Nothing in it for me, I assure you. https://camdenmin.co.uk/products/l-age-dor-de-lechelle-0-en-france-1930-1970?utm_source=camden-miniature-steam-services.myshopify.com+subscribers&utm_campaign=59d66a5bbb-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_6_29_2023_22_0&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_58623a04eb-59d66a5bbb-59745284&goal=0_58623a04eb-59d66a5bbb-59745284&mc_cid=59d66a5bbb&mc_eid=d1fb588ca5
  17. There was the Bristol and Gloucestershire Railway, which started life as a coal carrying tramway before being used to form the mainline north out of Bristol, with some branches to collieries.
