I looked at the basic tutorial about track laying on there website but I'm mostly just learning as I go along.

I’m one of the xtrack cad users on here too.  I did it that way too - you soon develop ways to do certain things.  Then you find out that there was an easier way!

It suits me for what I want to do, which is why I like it.

  2. Sad to hear this too, despite the inevitability. Condolences to the family as they come to terms with his absence.

It doesn’t seem that long since he retired and was looking forward to more time for modelling.

One good thing was his faith the hope that gave him for the future.

I had the same problem when one of the updates to my iPhone made it compress photos in HEIF, which my PC doesn't read, rather than jpeg. I was able to change the compression back to jpg in settings so you may be able to do the same though that won't help with any photos already stored in that format. There are also conversion apps available for the PC such as Pixillion that are free for non-commercial use.

I managed that too!  I think I converted sone of them back by duplicating in the iPhone after I had reset the settings which copied as .jpg (though might have been the iPad).

  4. Saw your question over on the signalling forum so came here to have a look.  The SRS Swift publication isn’t going to help much as it shows signals in the same places as in the photo above.

Answering your question, in each direction you have a distant signal, home signal and starting signal.  The home and starting signals are the same bit of kit as you suspected, the naming is just to differentiate which side of the signal box they are.

Out of interest, the Swift publication shows miniature semaphore arms for the shunt signals, so I’d guess that your diagram is from a later date.  Personally, I wouldn’t worry about it unless you’re modelling a specific year and you want it to be ‘absolutely accurate’.

The SRS have published a book which should show the information you need current in the 1950s. I am not sure if you have to be a member or not but it is vol 12 in the Swift books which can be purchased at a cost of £6.95 (plus P&P I would think).

I believe anyone can purchase, you just don’t get the member discount.  Unfortunately the SRS website was down last time I tried (hosting problems).

I'm caught between a) wanting it done and b) wanting it done properly.

In my experience a) is the Project Manager and b) is the Engineer (ie me).

The issue that arises on this railway is that I am both . . . .😁 🤪

One of the offices I worked in had a cartoon on the inside of the door saying “Do you want it done now, or done right?”

It was the signalling Testers office.

AFAIK, though, the ultimate intention is for all of the main line in Cornwall to go into Exeter. How soon that might be achieved is, of course, the $64,000 question. 😃

Dear Cornwall County Council, please would you pay lots of money to remove permanent jobs (i.e. not seasonal) from Cornwall and send them to Devon.  You know it makes sense . . .

    no pointwork any longer

Roskear (formerly junction) hasn’t had any points for a long time!  I designed the rewire of the box c.1981, still had points to the (docks?) branch and semaphore off the branch.  Within a year of completion, a locking test was undertaken and found to be too worn for safe use.

I agree, but it's not going to happen...

What is (apparently) going to happen is some extra signals, to break the long sections up, especially in the up direction.

The ultimate would be additional reversible crossovers and bi-directional working, something proposed in a resignalling scheme floated a few years ago, but when the designers and (internal NR) project sponsors realised how much it would cost, it was dropped.

Even the super duper scheme didn’t have bi-di from Totnes to Aish because that would have involved altering Exeter panel (which I believe is a no-no).

Hi Paul, I see crests and writing, so my guess would be it’s not a picture / photo as such, perhaps a poster of railway heralds?  I see the picture on the box isn’t much help 😀, Keith.

Strangely (!) the top of the box just happened to be hidden when I took the photo . . .

Or is there a wiring trick with MTBs?

You can use extra switches on point motors to stop the opposite one moving when it shouldn’t.  But the MP1 only has one switch which is needed for frog switching.

I would expect iTrain to be able to manage the conflict once you have got that far.

Until then, you just have to instill good practice and always set the other crossover straight before setting one to crossing.

You can still share the same dcc address for each of the three way points and the appropriate other point - it doesn’t help with the three way conflict, but it doesn’t make it any worse.
