  1. He gets very angry and turns green when you spell his name like that. It is Graeme.
  2. Good point. I believe that Peter Townend's cleaning team were mainly of Polish origin. I don't know whether they were new arrivals or men who remained in the UK after the ww2.
  3. The photo is in Yeadon Part 31 and is captioned 2939 (ie 696). Indeed a sad end.
  4. They certainly were along with chips at 2d a bag and bottles of Tizer and Jubbly the latter if you were of the orange juice persuasion.
  5. Something happened at PN (the real one) yesterday evening that we couldn't see back in the day. A non-stopping A1 hauled train travelling at 77mph - hope you saw her.
  6. They didn't appear very often. I saw them all but none in Hull.
  7. It was certainly a double track in 1956 when I started spotting and I suspect it was doubled when the Waterworks box was removed during the resignalling after the war.
  8. I believe that was 60020 Guillemot , not 60016 Silver King, which was cleaned to work the down Tees Tyne. Guillemot was scheduled to work the Night Sleeper and was standing pilot and was substituted as the rostered loco was not ready. PNT does not say if the rostered loco worked the night sleeper instead of the Tees Tyne.
  9. Sorry no. I only used up one exposure on the thing. The footplate crews in Hull certainly didn't like them and they quickly disappeared elsewhere before being withdrawn.
  10. ...another heap of junk! Dairycoates was full of them at the time.
  11. ...and from t'other side. On second thoughts it is not the other side - ladders are the clue! Sorry!
  12. A poor photograph of a couple of Hull stalwarts at Dairycoates.
  13. The answer lies in Yeadon's Register Part 25. N1 69461 was sent to Stratford for repair but was withdrawn on 7th June, 1954. In November 1954 Stratford made it Stationary Boiler 3294 and installed it at Shoeburyness for pre-heating coaches. It served on that duty until December, 1962 and by 21st January, 1963 SB 3294 was back at Stratford and was cut up in March, 1963. The last N1 to survive intact by a number of years.
  14. ...and some more H&S as it was! It was lunchtime hence the lack of bodies!
  15. Enjoyed catching up with the last few pages. I remember those V2's and A1's awaiting the last call at Leeman Road. One from the archives - the location is near Hull Grammar School (as was) in late 1970's I think. The loco is black 5 5000 on the way to Scarborough.
  16. Really enjoyed looking through this website. I have attached a pretty poor quality photograph taken at Dairycoates which no doubt brought tears to the eyes of the Hull spotters. This is 61010 Wildebeeste awaiting the final drag to Drapers
  17. Don't forget York also had J71 68286 in lined LNER and BR green when it was the station pilot
  18. Reply to question in post 9553 "Yet the builders of Tornado had to give one (a chime whistle) to an A1....why?" When we were building Tornado regular meetings were held with the powers that be and during one such meeting they were not happy that the LNER screech whistle was adequate warning on the modern railway and requested that a diesel air horn be fitted as well. We didn't like this much - quelle surprise! We thus asked whether a chime whistle would be acceptable and they agreed and therefore 60163 has the chime whistle formerly carried by "Golden Eagle" I think it was. Graham Nicholas will no doubt correct this if my memory is failing. I assume all would consider this preferable to a diesel air horn!
  19. Mouthwash time! Pearl Diver was a Peppercorn creation!
