It takes as long to do the brake shoes as it does to make the bogie but it does add a bit of "presence" I find. Then again, they're a flaming nuisance.
One of my LMS bogies has a Midland brake shoe snipped from a Brassmasters Cleminson 6-wheel chassis - what foresight the Midland Railway had not to put brakes on the centre wheels!
