  1. With a bit of a squint, looking at the COVID-19 dashboard https://www.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6 The daily recovered cases bar-chart (bottom right hand corner on a tab) appears to my eyes to be about 4 weeks behind the new cases bar chart - bear in mind that's a worldwide chart, individual countries will vary their testing regimens.
  2. An lovely gesture, thanks Derek! Although I'm not sure that Eileen's have fully taken on board Covid-19 safety advice - from the Adhesives page... Seriously though, because in the past I've always bought them at shows, are there any restrictions on mailing solvents and liquid fluxes?

Unless it's brie that's been left in the sun for a few days... then you might need lots of toilet paper!
  4. Indeed, I suggested something similar on one of the other threads (either the proper Covid-19 one or the Ally Pally one, can't remember now) last week.

I'm thinking now might be a good time to retrain as a plumber. With all the toilet paper being hoarded, those left out might revert to more unconventional bum wiping materials, and there will be good money to be made fixing the pipes bunged up when they get flushed.
  6. If people are under lockdown, streaming services are probably the thing that will keep a lot of the population sane.
  7. Silver linings: ISIS have told their terrorists to avoid Europe so they don't catch the virus. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/isis-issues-coronavirus-travel-advice-terrorists-should-avoid-europe-5m89dvjjw
  8. When I used to tech for theatre and had got the lights just right for a scene, but the director didn't like it, I'd reset them to an extreme and then wind them back to where I had them in the first place, at which point the director liked it after all.
  9. Indeed, it would have been faster to google and find peer reviewed articles on why it makes sense than to write a reply contradicting it.
  10. In case you missed this in the news, this is advice from the French health minister- and is backed up by science: If you are regularly taking an anti-inflammatory drug for pain relief (e.g. Ibuprofen, naproxen, cortisone), these suppress the body's immune system - consider switching to paracetamol instead. As ever, if taken for an underlying condition, take doctor's advice before changing your medication. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/14/anti-inflammatory-drugs-may-aggravate-coronavirus-infection
  11. Certainly in Medicine (my faculty) it's policy to issue iPads to students. Imperial College is centred around science, engineering and medicine - it would be hard to find a student without their own computer.
  12. There's enough of that on these pages without having to turn to the Sunday papers!
  13. I'm on the staff of Imperial College (but on the research side, so I don't do that much teaching) - we received a missive from the college president on Friday night saying that from Monday all teaching will be on line instead of the traditional lectures.

Being born in the pre MMR days (I think back then the individual rubella vaccine was targeted at girls), when I was about 10 I was kept at home for a while with German measles. During my quarantine period I remember whiling away my time building Superquick kits.
  15. I think any comparison with the common cold is dangerous at the moment. Yes, about 15% of colds can be attributed to a coronavirus. However there are over 200 virus strains that can cause colds - the most common being the rhinovirus which is a type of enterovirus. Polio is also caused by an enterovirus - I don't think anyone would compare polio to a cold!
  16. This has gone too far... I started reading a post about DCC CV values and automatically mentally expanded CV to coronavirus!
  17. Not suggesting that Ally Pally do this, because I think it's pointless as you can still pass on the virus while asymptotic, but interesting to note that my local Turkish restaurant posted on Facebook today that they would be taking the temperature of every customer wanting to come in and would refuse entry to anyone with a high temperature or who refused to be tested. They didn't say where they would stick the thermometer.
  18. This might just be me being cynical, but it is interesting that the news came within a couple of hours of Trump saying he might reconsider whether UK flights to the US can continue, depending on how things develop here.
  19. Just don't put a very high voltage across your points or you might get a corona discharge.
  20. There are over 200 viral types associated with colds, coronaviruses are responsible for about 15%. Better known are the rhinoviruses - part of the enterovirus family. Remember, just because a coronavirus can cause colds, it doesn't mean that this virus just causes 'a bad cold'. Some Enteroviruses cause colds too, but some are responsible for polio.
  21. It just appeared on The Guardian's site too https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/13/uk-to-ban-mass-gatherings-in-coronavirus-u-turn
  22. I would prefer to put a positive spin on it, and suggest a list of layouts and traders who are still attending - although I suspect that won't be known until closer to the weekend.
  23. Maybe RMWeb could start a "Self-Isolation Challenge" for the best model making done during a period of self-imposed exile.
