  1. Thank you for the response. I’m not sure I’ll do the turntable, but I do like the engine shed. It looks very similar to the one at mansfield that I may model. A curve ball is I’ve discovered that at the same/era time there was an engine and diesel shed, with sidings, at Kirkby in Ashfield. I’ll not bog this thread down with that, but will be watching the developments on your layout with interest.
  2. That platform is really clever. Well done in spending so much time and effort in getting things so accurate.
  3. Just spotted this thread on a web search. I’m looking at modelling Mansfield Town Station - in effect the one that is left, but looking at the 50’s and 60’s to catch the steam and diesel l like. A little artistic licence allowed. On the OS maps they show sidings in effect to the Titchfield Park side of the station. I’ve been to the library and got what I can from them, plus acquired the 1917 so maps. I’m still search the net as well, but wondered if any contributors had any photos of this site? Ive also spotted the model railway exhibition in March. I’ll be coming along. Thanks, Andy
  4. Hi, It indeed is. I’m not sure I’d want to have it’s complete length in the layout. More thinking needed, I think. It will be a couple of months before I start, so I have time. Thanks again, Andy.
  5. Thanks. I’m still at the pondering stage. I need to have a play with the track planning software. I could model the station and then out in effect towards Sutton. This would include the goods sidings and steam shed. The shed was in a sort of strange direction, until you realise why. I’ll cover that more as my layout develops. I’m not rushing it. I’d like to learn more of the superb skills on show on here, especially with the station building and canopy.
  6. As above… Bottom left is the single track that looks round that side of the station Feeding a goods building, and also further round a cattle siding. Lots of scope for a layout. I will struggle to achieve the standards of some layouts on here, but it will be a fun time trying. All photos courtesy of Mansfield library and can be reproduced. This train is going north, towards Worksop. Something else occurred to me - I also have the choice to model in effect from the station when going towards Sutton, and not do the viaduct. This would then clearly include all the sidings, and the steam shed. The configuration of the shed puzzled me until I saw the wider os plans. Then it made sense, so rt of - no turntable as there was a triangle/loop where the trains could be turned round if needed? I don’t have room to model that aspect. I’ll continue with my research and once the room is ready I’ll decide. I’m settled on the era.
  7. Hi there. You are quite right. I’m considering a 50’s - 60’s era version of the station you describe. The images show the station front, and the viaduct. I’ll post another image of the station with the glass canopy. https://www.ourmansfieldandarea.org.uk/content/topics/transport/mansfield-town-station This shows under the canopy.
  8. The viaduct design has given me some ideas. The viaduct I may go for is at Mansfield, and is north east of the current station. West of the station in the 50’s and 60’s was goods sidings, and further along was a TMD for steam. Lovely work. I may come back to you to ask you for a bit more detail on the viaduct structure itself once I get the room sorted?
  9. That is excellent. It helps me with the points needed, too. Thank you very much for taking the time to share the link.
  10. Hi Andy. Thanks for clarifying. I’m also looking at modelling in N Gauge. I already feel sorry for my eyes! A quick search found a Peco N viaduct that actually looks very similar to the one in town. Can you clarify what material you placed on your 10mm polystyrene for you platforms? I liked the edging you’ve done, and clearly the ability to add curves may prove useful. Finally thank you in anticipation of your time in answering my questions. Andy.
  11. Hi Andy, Reading thru all 77 Page of this thread with fascination. I’m interested in so many aspects of your construction, including buildings and especially the platforms and glass. I’m looking at having a go at Mansfield Railway station and the glass canopy - gulp. On 12/12 on page 54 you posted a photo showing a bridge/viaduct. Do you know which model/make that is, by any chance? (I’ve got to page 54 and spotted the picture with the bridge, hence the question) I can’t add any more to the superlatives others have posted. Superb.
  12. Lovely layout. Where did you get your class 20’s from. I’ve done a bit of surfing, and can’t seem to find any in the usual places? thanks.
  13. Hi, Could I ask you how you have got on with the Peco turntable? I notice that you’ve motorised it? Im also impressed with the Metcalfe stuff - especially how you have done the engine sheds. Thanks for posting. Again another contributor that’s inspiring me to consider some painting and making!
  14. Hi Andy. I’m new to the forum, and came to your layout via a search for N Gauge and looking for viaducts. I’m considering modelling a layout broadly on Mansfield’s station in the 50’s/60’s (with some artistic licence). You viaduct is noticeably similar in many aspects, but a main difference is no water, and more industrial and shops near to the one in Mansfield. I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to get near your scratch building and weathering skills, but a thought I had was to get hold of some pre-loved stock to practice on. The other thing that caused me to pause for further planning thought was the comment you and Duncan, from the Shirebrook model, mentioned re modelling below track level. Thank you for posting your layout updates, and also sharing some of the techniques you use. I’d best start getting some modelling kit together!
  15. The station and goods yards I remember are those that used to be not far from the site of the current Robin Hood Line station. The OS maps I’ve retrieved show this well, and give me really good scope for a layout. My perspective on scale needs some enhancing ie I need to get engrained how long coaches in N are. I sense a visit to a couple of local’ish shops on the cards. (Rails of Sheffield and Digitrains at Lincoln). I also need to start understanding the board layout considerations better. Immediately north/east of the station is the viaduct. There was a goods yard and cattle area immediately south of platform 2, with sidings servicing that area. The TMD for steam was further west, so there may need to be some artistic licence to incorporate that. No diesels we’re maintained there from what I can see - all that was done at Shirebrook/Toton etc? As for visiting, there is very little left. I’ve biked a lot of the pit railways, and walked next to the line up near Thoresby pit. There is a really good example of a signal box up there. There is some talk of the line being considered for passenger traffic again, but that looks a way off.
  16. Hi all, Rather than keep adding posts to the 'welcome' thread, I thought I'd start a new 'slow burner' on here. I've just spent an hour in the local library, with their OS maps from 1911/17, and also numerous photos from that era, and before/after. The photo's were simply amazing! I recall my grandfather telling me of 2-6-4's and 2-6-0's operating at Mansfield GCR station, but I also discovered Mansfield had a separate LNER station! I also had a thought that the Steam TMD faced towards the central railway station, when in fact it faced away. How strange. The OS maps were very useful for visualising track layout, and also that next to the station was a goods building/yard, and a cattle yard. Instant idea! One thing I did realise is the track will take further planning to bring in undulations and also some bridges/viaducts of some kind. I also came to the conclusion I could not do it justice in OO, as I don't have the space(board size is 10ft by 8 1/2 feet chaser, with a centre working area), so I'll further explore N gauge. I'm looking at cheating a little, in doing era 5 and 6, as when the sidings for goods were taken out, the main station was still in use for passengers but the line was heavily used for freight. Examples of the kind of freight is evident from the very large and excellent Shirebrook N Gauge Railway (an internet search will find photos). I'm a month or two from breaking ground, but when the time is right, I'll start adding photos. There will be some artistic licence, but provided I can get the stock I'm thinking of... I've also obtained Rail Modeller Pro for Mac. Seems very easy to use, so will give me chance to at least visualise what I'm trying to achieve. Finally, a big thanks to those suggestions re local library and OS maps - it's not all on the internet! Cheers for now, Andy.
  17. Hi, I’m late to this layout, and I came to it by accident. I was looking for track plans of the old Mansfield Railway Station, goods yard and TMS from the 1950’s and 60’s. I did a search for Shirebrook, which took me here. As a 12 yr old, our neighbour was a driver based at Shirebrook. Gordon, who became an ‘uncle’, got chatting to my dad. He mentioned I had an 00 (eventually an N Gauge) layout. Gordon invited us both several times to the depot at weekends, whereby loco’s needed shunting and getting ready for the following weeks work. 56005 was one of the locos. I got chance to stand with Gordon whilst he moved stuff round, including 56005. I spotted it earlier upthread. Fabulous memories. Id always had a fascination with the Type 2 Class 20 locos, and again got to see them up close. This layout, especially the Class 56, the maintenance shed and offices brought back lovely memories. Lovely layout. The previous positive comments have said it all. Once I get started again, and when I get brave enough to do weathering, I’ll remember this layout and read up again on the techniques used. With kind regards, Andy
